'World of Warcraft' May Disqualify You for a Job

Some guy recently met with a recruiter who specializes in online media industry. The recruiter expressed to him that his clients, the employers who are looking for job candidates, specifically instruct him that they don't want World of Warcraft players.

1 - Gotta love.....
.....baseless discrimination and prejudice. Isn't that illegal? Aren't you supposed to evaluated on your job skills, not your personal life? Especially when said personal life is probably NOT going to be plastered all over the place, meaning no image problems resulting from it?

Who would have thought that playing a game would prevent you from getting a job?

This just proves that the Vampire-Robot-Nazi-Zombies who are going to destroy the world in 2012 have already begun their first wave.

1.2 - This isn't even as bad as it gets.
You can at least lie about your WoW playing habits, but alot of employers these days do google searches on prospective employees and check their myspace pages and crap to look for things they might consider "undesirable" traits. Watch your asses out there folks. Privacy will soon be a chapter in your history books.

That's still more acceptable than not getting the job just because you play a damn game. I can see a company not wanting a "weekend slut" to ruin their image, because prospective employers aren't the only ones who do background checks.

But to deny someone a job because of stereotypes FROM A GAME?!!! That's the height of discrimination.

And besides, having a myspace page means you want to be checked out. If you don't want people to see stuff, make your page private. That's why the option is there.

I don't know what the situation is over the pond, but in the UK, you can't state that because its discrimination.

"The recruiter went on to say that employers believe that WoW people can't give a 100% on the job and that they lack focus because their attention is swirling around elsewhere. Oh, and their sleeping patterns are all messed up, too."

Well I guess were lumping all of the hardcore wow players in with those who don't even play WoW that hard. That really doesn't seem right, I know a few people who played WoW practically everyday and also knew some who played for about an hour or two each day and that was about it. Judging based on stories alone isn't the best way to judge all WoW Players.

lol my teacher plays wow and he still marks papers on time and in some cases faster then other teachers. this reasoning is pointless, not all players play till 4 in the morn everyday.

hell, WoW players are dedicated people. who wouldn't want that kind of an employee? just make sure they can't play at work and you're gold. addictive stuff.

they're just butthurt because they got kicked out of their gild.

5.1 - Yeah, dedicated idiots
WoW isn't just a game as so many people think, its an addiction. You can be addicted to any game or any MMORPG, but WoW is so much more different from the rest. It cannot really be played "casually". If you played it casually, choose a different game - you're wasting your time.

I can understand why they wouldn't want WoW players but it is wrong to do that.

It depends what you mean by casually. But you can definately play WoW without it being a timesink. You dont need to play WoW all day to succeed. Arenas ensure that you can get top quality gear without having to play alot, you just need skills.

I used to play WoW.

If I was interviewing a guy who for some reason I found out he's a WoW player, I would find a reason not to hire him.

WoW addiction is serious stuff. It does indeed affect your personal life and career. You say "zomg wtf its a video game", but believe me, people play that particular one way too much.

I Play wow... I think that the Company is Correct in a way but its too Biased... they would have to try and weed out anyone with any kind of addiction.... i was addicted to diablo 2 way more than wow... and evercrackers are as bad.

But what about things other than Games... i mean Some chick has a Sex addiction.. her day dreaming about sex isn't as bad as me day dreaming about Pwning people in a 2v2? This is why im glad i have a job so easy i can play wow 90% of the time im there.

That is absolutely correct.

As soon as I started playing WoW I didn't leave my bedroom. I didn't see friends as much, I didn't go out partying, I didn't do sh!t all.

The thing is, it wasn't because I just "wanted" to sit and play all day but because I had to. I know, sounds rediculous, right? Well, the thing is when I played, I had to keep my rank up which required weekly PvPing and honor farming. Without doing this, I couldn't get the gear.

But then you think "So why don't you just raid?". Well, same thing really. Only this time I need to do it with 39 other people. You aren't active in a raid guild? Good bye, you're gone. Or if they work the DPK system still, you didn't get much choice on items so there wasn't much point anyway.

Maybe its changed over the years, I don't know. But from what I heard from my friend its even worse now with arena ranking, etc.

WoW is a pathetic game and I personally am just absolutely disgusted with it. Of course their reeling in money like a sh!t storm but it isn't doing any people any good. Social life, jobs, health issues can and are affected by MMORPGs, WoW being one of the biggest ones.

7.2 - totally
I worked with a guy who's fiancee (and a hot one at that) dumped him because of WoW. And guess what - he kept playing more and actually said that it's cool cuz now he can play uninterrupted and he doesn't regret it. Oh, and he just got a warning at work because he's always sleepy and doesn't focus on his job. Funny thing - he'll never ever get a chick like that again. It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a guy like him. We just couldn't believe it he got her in the first place. Total jackpot. And he fu** it up because of this addicting crap. I play a lot (ps3) and I know how games can suck you in. But come on.. :)

Bottom line is: I know it's wrong to discriminate because of something like that, but if I'd be hiring someone and I'd know that the guy is a WoW player, he'd never get it. I'd come up with another reason (or none at all). On the other hand - I'd never say on the interview that I play WoW (unless I'd be applying for a Blizzard job :).

the black thing, I get tired of after work everyday someone locks their keys in the car and someone comes and asks "hey can you break in my car for me?"

Back on topic though: Not hiring WoW players is retarded; I guess you might as well ban Final Fantasy 11 players, CoD 4 Clan members, Halo 2/3 players, Star Craft nuts, etc. oh and while your at it why not anyone that has an achievement score of 10,000+ or a Trophy level 3+

11 - All you people b1tching about discrimination .... get real!
The employer has a right to employ the person they deem best fit for the job.

If WOW players are deemed less capable, for whatever reason, then not hiring wow players is their right as an employer!

Remember this, kids... no one owes you anything - especially a job!

You all sound like a bunch of whiney socialists!

12 - you would be a terrible lawyer
you could sue them. now, if you didn't show up for work cause you were playing all night, you really wouldn't be doing your job would you?

it's a baseless assumption
