Bartle on WoW Torture Quest

Speaking exclusively to IncGamers, Bartle outlines and explains why his comments on the torture quest featured in the newest World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, were taken out of context.

Seriously, can anyone fault Bartle? I mean Blizzard are basically encouraging torture here!

It's not like it's a choice, even if it isn't compulsory. You get rewarded if you do it, and if you don't, there is no positive effect, or any effect at all.

1.1 - Shouldn't they remove the whole WOW.
Many people do consider WoW as a form or torture.

It's pretty horrific, but I still think this is all a bit silly. Characters do far worse in the game than torture.

Not really. I mean, killing is in most cases considered a lesser offence than torture. There are situational reasons to killing, but torture is pure and maliciously used to the sole extent of hurting someone physically until they break mentally.

Something that would fit nicely in the DK quest line (where you have such elements as well), but hardly in any neutral/good character.

2.2 - Death better than torture?
Really, death is better than torture? Personally, I'll take the torture if I live to see another day... But hey that is just me.

@thetamer - did you know that the largest chelonian is the great leatherback sea turtle, which reaches a shell length of 200 cm (80 inches) and can reach a weight of over 900 kg (2,000 lb, or 1 short ton). Freshwater turtles are generally smaller.

and blowing up stuff is always fun (in game ofc..) some one sould make a montage of all the fun stuff you can blow up in wotlk and email Bartle the link

The question is, is this out of context or is this something that's been blown out of all proportion. Bartle probably isn't alone in thinking this.

Yeh, well, even when Bartle was basically misquoted I thought there was some point to his opinion. when he was correctly quoted and IncGamers talked to him it made even more sense...

yeah, I appreciate the irony contrasted with real life. Torture's all fine and cool apparently, as long as it's behind closed doors. Any depiction in fiction or entertainment even in passing therefore must be wrong....Of course! :D

How did you know I was a terrorist...? If the CIA or the FBI are watching, that was, as we say in the UK, a funny, a joke.

I'm just goign to go over here now.

its ok to have the thought just as long as you dont act it out :D, so true with many things ie Gnome Punting, when ever i see a gnome i just wanna run up and kick him through some goal posts, but if i were to do that IRL id probably get sued :(

Im assming your afraid of gnomes? and this is why you say these horrible things. Its ok to be afriad of gnomes, many time have i looked at one and thought "Ohh crap he wants to eat my family with a spoon carved from a taurens spine" but as long as you don't act out towards them and never leave a room with your back facing them then you will get along with this far FAR superior race a lot better. :)

I don't really see the problem with it tbh... I mean no ones gonna go find an rl dude and torture them after playing this... they're WoW players, they won't leave their room.

It's easy to defend when games include what amounts to mindless killing. It's a grey area.

10 - This is pretty funny because
With my warlock I've used Searing Pain, Immolate and other 'hurtful' things on Animals, Humanoids , Elementals , demons , and what ever else you can name in WoW, lol heck, I even kill them and skin them.

My point is it's a freaking virtual game, if your gonna complain about
how you have to torture some virtual npc, think about how many you've killed for exp LOL

11 - Seriously? C'mon!
Two things I need to point out:

1. WoW, like other MMOs and RPGs, is a game in which people make characters that wander the land, killing people and then taking their money. Dead characters are often stripped of their clothing, armor, and other weapons. These are called "loot drops". It is the most fundamental mechanic of the game.

2. Bartle is changing his story in regard to his 'torture' objections. His initial objection was oddly emotional. Gamers objected, fairly, to his criticism. He is now changing his story, claiming his objections were taken out of context.

Actually, I think you'll find that he never objected to the actual torture thing in the first place, and I'd suggest you read his FIRST blog from HIS blog page after the paragraph he criticised the initial quest. I think you'll find that actually, he was misquoted and that people didn't bother checking their sources. His concern was always contextual, and it's stated here:
http://www.youhaventlived.c...

Can I draw your attention to this quote from taht blog:
"I don't mind having torture in an MMO — it's the kind of thing a designer can use to give interesting choices that say things to the players"

This is a perfect example of bad journalism, misinterpretation and editors not checking their sources.
