Blu-ray: A 2008 Holiday Hit?

TVPredictions.com:
PriceGrabber.com says sales of the high-def disc player are booming.
Washington, D.C. (December 2, 2008) -- Newspapers across the nation reported over the weekend that many Black Friday shoppers purchased sub $200 Blu-ray players. Some publications called the high-def disc player one of the hottest items on consumers' shopping lists.

"Flatscreen TVs, Blu-Ray players, vacuum cleaners and toys were selling fast at a Wal-Mart store at Fairfax, Va," Money/CNN reported Friday. One newspaper said a $128 Magnavox Blu-ray player was sold out by 9:30 a.m. at another Wal-Mart.

But now two new reports have emerged that could give substance to the speculation that the 2008 holiday season could be a turning point for the high-def disc.

First, the National Retail Federation reported Monday that Blu-ray players were among the top-selling items during Black Friday weekend.

And today, PriceGrabber.com said that the Blu-ray player was the third hottest item during Black Friday weekend, trailing only "women's boots" and watches. The site, which monitors online shopping prices and trends, says online sales of Blu-ray players rose 147 percent compared to last year.

In addition, Sony's BDP-S350 was the third most popular product on Black Friday, PriceGrabber.com reported, trailing only Nintendo's Wii and the Ugg Australia 'Classic Short' boot.

1 - I assume someone is going to post the weekly "Blu Ray is dead" article now right?
Since when ever evidence of blu ray's longevity is posted someone immediately goes to some site with an analyst's "predictions" and "opinions" of Blu Ray's death.

But I guess all this will be forgotten 2-3 years from now when Blu Ray is commonplace and in majority of households

BB in State College, PA was sold out of every sub $300 player as of today still...and had been since last Friday...the BD disc shelf was drastically dug into as well, with any recent movie only having one or two copies on the shelf...I understand they may be re-stocking, but this time of year someone would lose their job immediately if stuff wasn't on the shelf as soon as it arrives at the retailer...

they also only had 5 PS3's in stock, nearly all of which were the $500 160gb skus...and no LBP or CoD:WaW in stock as well...for comparisons sake I counted over 30 360's, ranging through all different sku's...just pointing that out...I know the 360 killed the PS3 on black friday, or so we've been told, but still interesting...

3 - it's definitely turning out to be a blu christmas indeed!
i just went on a bluray movie hunting and snag some good buys. i got transformers on amazon for 9 bucks, and ironman for 15 bucks in walmart, while i was doing that i grabbed a copy of nba 2k9 at target at a great price at 39 bucks!
the first thing i noticed was everywhere i went the bluray racks on most of the stores are being emptied out and that is why i think this is to be a great holiday for bluray disc and players. and of course the big one is not even out yet,.. i mean DARKNIGHT. this movie is going to sell like crazy. ok have a bluchristmas everyone.

4 - So how does this work?>!
Does sony make money on each blu ray player and each blu ray movie that is sold, even the samsung blu ray players? Thats great Blu ray is doing well but did sony invent blu ray, so they get paid blu ray royalties right?@ even if blu ray players sold arent their own brand?

yes, they get royalties for anything related to Blu-ray.

anyway, it's not surprising. people didn't shell out $ for an HDTV and not want to make the most out of it.

go around town to stores and try to find an SDTV these days.
they're almost obsolete on store shelves.

that's indication where Blu-ray will go in the future.

thats why MS refuses to put an external blu-ray player on their 360, they know alot of people will buy it and that means more money for sony.

I am sorry...but can you post an article supporting your claim that they do not want a external bluray drive because Sony will make money.....especially since Microsoft is making money or made money off of bluray. Companies often co-exist a little bit more friendlier than a lot of people would like to believe....especially when talking about different divisions within a company.

4.5 - you've herd the rumors
http://www.slashgear.com/mi...

sony would love for it to happen, its just MS isnt stupid enough to help out their competition. its commonsense really. this would give sony alot of money, why would MS want sony to have alot of money? so they can make more games? or have more tv ads? its all about competition right now, you dont give your competitors money, period, unless it benefits you more, and thats not what is going on here.

I would not be surprised if they got their copies from Blockbuster. My Blockbuster has had Dark Knight on shelves at least since Sunday.....is there not any legal ramification for Blockbuster?

Right about now Don Reisinger over at Cnet should be writing up some Sony/PS3/BD hate spam to counter this.

I'll never understand why people thought BR would fail, but everyone who buys a TV, buys an HDTV.

The first thing I wanted to do when I got an HDTV was to look at some HD content. I didn't buy a Bravia to look at 480p, thats for sure.

8 - I'm always happy...
to see more people picking up blu ray players. I picked up Step Brothers and Wanted on blu ray today, and I imported Sin City (Canada exclusive? lol) bringing my collection to 75 different titles:) Bring on The Dark Knight!

For people with HDTV's, and Blu-ray players so cheap, I never doubted that Blu-ray players were going to fly off shelves.

Also, the advertising for Blu-ray has REALLY picked up compared to earlier this year. I've seen plenty of Walmart Blu-ray commercials, and I've seen a couple of Dark Knight Blu-ray DVD commercials just in the past few days, and that's just a few that I've seen lately.

Even though I only buy all of my DVD's on Blu-ray now, My sister bought the standard DVD version of Hellboy 2 over the weekend and we watched it. During the previews before the movie started there was a Blu-ray advertisement about 30 seconds-40 seconds long and it's like they were encouraging people that are about to watch the standard DVD version of Hellboy 2 to upgrade to Blu-ray.

Movie studios are REALLY pushing Blu-ray and with more people buying HDTV's because of cheaper prices, it's going to translate into plenty of Blu-ray player adoption.

Well if you actually HAVE Bluray this would be a none issue.

But I do know this, Bluray is the hot tech for this Holiday season. When peeps I know bring home a new HDTV, the first thing they upgrade is their signal be it digital cable or Dish, after that they toss out their upscale DVD and go Bluray. I can always tell when someone is a Bluray virgin, because they brag about how good their setup is constantly. I have never heard of people talking about how good their digital download is. The only people I've heard talking about digital download are the tools on this board. The vast majority of population view DD as Pay Per View, its something they hate.

13 - Kind of surprising that
the PS3 doesn't seem to be benefiting much from the format's success based off the report from the National Retail Federation. Might need to be bundled with the Dark Knight otherwise only standalones will benefit.

13.1 - Why are you surprised?...
if the claim is that people will buy cheap over quality......it is not surprising people are buying these cheap sub par bluray players over the more expensive but more qualified ps3 player? Some people are saying that the jump from dvd to bluray is no where near the same as the move from vhs to dvd............now are you expecting those same people to recognize the quality of paying around $250 more for a ps3 versus the cheap magnavox?
