Sony Unable to Confirm Gran Turismo 5 Release Date

Last week Sony's chief executive in southern Europe, James Armstrong was reported to have revealed to Spanish newspaper El Financiero that Gran Turismo 5 will be released at Christmas 2009. However, Sony Computer Entertainment UK was unable to confirm the game's release when speaking to VideoGamer.com today.

"Polyphony are working on GT5, but we cannot confirm a launch date at this point in time," said a Sony Computer Entertainment UK spokesperson.

lol agreed, the game is including more things that GT5P has:

weather system
more tracks
more cars
destruction system
deeper online integration

... no wonder they can't confirm release date yet, the guys are taking their time. and if i remember correctly.. that helped quite a bit last time.

I'm not knocking on the Sixaxis/DS3 but I have Burnout Paradise and holy crap the "triggers" are god awful for racing games. do you guys actually like those triggers? I mean I can see why ppl move shooting to the R1 button now for shooters.

When Sony says

"At least close to completion by [Insert Date]"

It usually means quite some months later... which gives more strength to the 2010 release date of GT5.

Lets be honest guys, both PS an Xbox fans. Sony NEEDS GT5 and God of War 3 for 2009... Killzone 2 will not be enough and we all know it as well as we know that Microsoft won't be revealing its 2009 lineup anytime soon, so it's not as if it would be a walk in the park even WITH GT5 included.

I honestly don't understand what could be taking so long, by the time GT5 is released, Microsoft might have already released 2 iterations of Forza Motorsport, something similar to what has happened with Killzone 2 and the Gears of War franchise.

no sony does not need GT5 and GOW3 for 2009. i need those games.

honestly, they have a strong line up as it is. well at least better than what the competition has announced so far. i know the competition will reveal a couple of titles, but sony still shouldnt worry about it. they have infamous, kz2, uncharted 2, wardevil for 2009. they will probably announce a couple more to add to that. a price drop will also help them sell alot more.

@1.5
GT5 was never given an official release date. some games are considered delayed just because they were speculated to release on x date, but an official release wasnt announced yet.

2 - my guess.....
....is Spring 2010. I really really hope we see it before then, but its doubtful due to the fact that Polyphony are perfectionists when it comes to Gran Turismo.

2.1 - I see what you mean...
But IMO, it's best if they don't announce a date. It's better than announcing a date now, and delaying it when problems arise. I've had enough of that

I agree, Polyphony are perfectionist with Gran Turismo 5. If it was for perfectionism alone, I believe the game should already be out there by early 2009. I think it's more related to the late addition of car damage which wasn't planned from scratch.

I remember Forza 2 producers saying they dind't have any idea that the paperwork behind car damage was so damn difficult to pull off, and it seems that Polyphony is also experiencing this particular situation.

5 - If it means they can finalise and improve on
the weather system

and destruction damage system

and maybe even some other features, I'm all for it!

Besides, they NEED some titles in 2010!

if it gets delayed enough it will feature flying cars.

But seriously, this game is ofcourse a sony blockbuster, they shouldnt delay it so much.
It will only do harm to the system its reputation.

@xi YOu work for sony why do you have to defend games delay? They had 4 years since it was annouced somewhere in 2005 to counter 360s launch and yet you have the nerve to say that it might be to improve weather system etc. They can't even program it faster to save their lives. You'd think sony doesn't want a blockbuster to boost up their sales? If it was just delayed to improve weather system or to add more tracks or cars can't they do it as DLC?

With all the delays one would think it might come out for PS4.

@Foxgod LMAO...bubbles

7 - Wonder whats taking so long?
If they already released the Prologue you would figure this would be out already.

GT is too in-depth a racer for me nowadays, but I have very fond memories of first getting GT. I must have read the manual (there were TWO) a dozen times to get the mechanics right...damn Skip Barber training. My fave ride was the Mitsu GTO...learning how to tune for 1/4 miles and everything. Good times.

I have been playing Grid lately though...best racer I have played in a long time IMO. Perfecr balance of arcade and sim. PGR4 was also pretty good, but not as fast or fun as Grid. Still have to really play Burnout and Midnight Club, tho I like Grid's approach a lil better.

Question...is GT the only game Polyphony makes?

1. Its takes six months to make a car for GT5. they are aiming to get at least 700 cars in GT5.

2. Adding Realistic Damage to the game. They have to get through company issues first, like convincing Ferrari to allow them to put Damage in their Cars in GT5.

3. Adding an interactive Weather system in the game.

4. making its online mode work, and bring a sense of community into GT5. In other words, Bring loads of community features into GT5.

5. Obviously putting alot of Tracks in the final product.

and others I havent touched on that other people on this site will touch on.

and GT isnt the only game that Polyphony makes, although its the only game series that they developed on for Many years. Their Very first game ever made was on the PS1, it was called "Motor Toon Gran Prix" which was basically the ground work for the Birth of the Gran Turismo Series. it had a sequel after. They also made another PS1 game called "Omega Boost". On the PS2, other than GT3 and GT4, they made "Tourist Trophy", which was Motorcycle Racing simulation. they used the GT4 engine to make that game.

I do agree though that Grid was a pretty good game, and so is Burnout Paradise, GT5p, Grid and Burnout Paradise keep me busy until the Real GT5 launches.

@7.1 how can it take 6 months to add a car, if like you say they will have 700 cars, then that is 350 years? I think you must be mistaken.

Nope, that was the latest figure given. 6 months.

However, I think something was misunderstood. I'm fairly certain that this includes the time spent visiting tracks to record engine noises (this is a huge process - on GT5P there's a video of them with the GT-R recording it from every possible angle while it's idle and well as while moving - stick 900 cars into the mix and this becomes a lengthy process) as well as completley building the cars (inside and out) and programming their real world behaviour. Damage modeling has put time on.

So, while it takes "6 months" to do a car, I'm fairly certain that it's not all spent programming and I'm more certain they have multiple teams working on the cars.

Similiar thing with the tracks, even for existing tracks, they will go and rephotograph every single possible angle of every part of the track to make sure every bump and apex is perfect.

Trust me. Gran Turismo is a labour of love and when it's finished it will be unmatched because no one puts as much care and attention into a racer as Polyphony Digital.

Could you tell us something we didn't know already... I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to interpret last week's post that a release date wasn't certain (but the time period was).... stop fueling the hype train with the same info over and over.

I was talking to a friend about this last night:

Rally events with snow and dirt tracks.

I hope those have stayed because in GT4, the drifting in the Rally cars felt so good and GT5 with this would be INSANE!

10 - Difference is...
Whenever a new Gran Turismo is released - the whole market is buzzing. They tend to leapfrog - set the new gold standard. Was the same with GT4 and GT4:P. And by the way - GT4:P sucked compared to the final GT4 game.

That said - I think it is most likely going to be 2009. And as usual we will be in awe.

Well if GT5 isn't ready now, then it wont be ready until at least sometime in 2009.

And I would suspect that sony doesn't want to release it until 2009 to add to the 09 line up.I would say it would be a good strategy to put GT5 in the 09 line up against M$ 09 line up.
