Handheld Market Explodes: DS Sells 500k In 4 Weeks; PSP Sales Up 245%

Japan - Nintendo's newest take on the DS formula is a big hit so far, propelling the platform to nearly half a million in sales in the past 4 weeks, making this the best month for the DS in the past year. The DSi, a DS Lite with a camera, an SD card slot, and several hardware upgrades, launched at 188 thousand its first week, and has been selling another 100 thousand each week since.

The PSP also enjoys a renewed interest since its latest hardware revision, the PSP3000. In the past six weeks the PSP has sold 413 thousand units, a 245% increase from the previous six weeks (169k)...

DS is destroying the poor PSP. Just wait until Phantasy Star Zero, 7th Dragon, Ninokuni, Layton 3, Suikoden Tierkreis and the rest of AAA DS games get released.

Good job at making DS fan look bad.Couldn't you have taken the high road and said something positive for the competition seeing as it has survived this long against a ninty hand held?

More like your lack of sense in reality is hurting people's brain the most. Have you owned or even played anything on the PSP? If not, then you are unable to judge anything about it whatsoever. Furthermore, the PSP has actually performed astronomically better than any other competition that went against Nintendo in the handheld market. In addition, no other handheld (to my knowledge) controlled as much market share as Sony has in relation to Nintendo since the Gameboy began. Also, if you can't see the amount of good software that is available for the PSP then obviously you're a blind hater. You're nonsense and picayune views stop here.

Say, could any non-biased n4g member give me the scoop on the psp 3000. Whats the deal with the screen issues and have/will they be dealt with. I'm really looking forward to a psp but ever since the news of the issues, I've been holding back.

well, the issue stems from the psp 3000's new LCD. Because it produces brighter and more natural colors and attempts to alleviate image "ghosting", the scan lines and interlacing appear more visibly than they normally would. This issue is apparent on game that change brightness drastically, have a lot going on screen and even during some video playback.

While the first iteration of psp 3000's experience this problem, and since Sony is aware of the issue, it is assumed that later batches of the psp 3000 will be fixed. There is not, however, an official Sony update stating IF the issue is fixed. So any stories that may emerge about the issue being gone should be taken as purely anecdotal until that official word is released.

If you're looking to buy a PSP 3000, I say wait until after the holidays. Otherwise you may get one that has this issue. My cousin bought one a few weeks ago and his has the screen issues. And it's especially noticeable compared to games running on my PSP Slim.

To be honest though, there is no different feature and spec wise between the Slim and 3000 except the anti-reflective screens and enhanced contrast ratio and response time. Unless those things are essential to you I say try to find a Slim.

Thanks alot rhood!

thats the post I was hoping for!

I'm definitely gonna wait a bit on a psp. I originally wanted one for the long bus ride to my job, but since I have now changed to a job I will drive too, its less of a necessity.

that being said I cant wait to play god of war and FFVII, but I'll get some good paychecks starting jan. 09 so that will be the time, hopefully with the screen being fixed on new 3000s
