17

3 - Actually
The DS and PSP have quite different markets. They both have a market that overlaps both the systems but the rest of their market is quite different.
On one side you have the DS which atracts mostly (but not only) children of ages 6-12, adults who like to play quick easy games, older people who don't play games often.
On the other side you have the PSP, they atract the teen demograpic and young adults (ages 13-35). Also people who are more into extensive gaming. It's more of a multimedia device than only a gaming device, so you'll also see people that are not into games use the PSP for listening to music, watching movies or using it as a GPS.
Those are different markets, they need different strategies. But what you see is that both Sony and Nintendo trying to go in the middle with their strategies. Nintendo releasing DSi (more multimedia capabilties) and Sony going for more unique easygoing titles.
Whereas the other handhelds competed with Nintendo directly and lost, you can't really say the DS won from the PSP.
Anyway, I don't give a rats ass to who wins if people actually care for that. I'm in it for the entertainment, I like to have some interactive fun in my free time.

Not only that but the DS has a ton of RPGs (more than the 360, Wii, PSP or PS3) and some are pretty hardcore old-school stuff (Etryan Odissey 1&2 beying a good example). It's also becoming the console of excelence to play adventure games, something that is lacking on any of the other rivals. The styllus and two screens are just too atractive and excelent for both RPGs and Adventure gaming.

Babylonian, you're right. The PSP capitalizes on gamers that are traditionally PS console gamers. It focuses on games and properties that are recognized by more adult gamers. I have a DS Lite and I like it for what it is, but I have far more games for my PSP, like Star Ocean. Crisis Core on top of that and many PS RPGs like Breath of Fire 3. On top of those RPGs, there's Ratchet and Clank, and other properties that are only on PSP that can't be had on Nintendo's handhelds. Yes Nintendo has ruled the handheld roost for almost 20 years, but the PSP has a great market unto itself in us mature gamers. We that grew up on the original Gameboy, but moved onto the multimedia huge PSP. On top of all above, the PSP has magnificent multimedia capabilities, and can view widescreen video as well as it can play music. On top of that, it has built in Wi-Fi that can scan internet radio channels and scan the WWW for answers for games that you're stuck in.
Gameboy ruled the roost for over a decade but Sony's PSP is a great bargain, both for multimedia and games alike.

4.1 - erm , not really mate.
The psp is doing just fine its got some great games like socom and liberty/vice city stories which look better than anything on the ds. Add that to the music, movie and web features makes your comment sound a little silly. Nintendo has a huge fan base and for psp to fair as well as it has against or along side the ds proves how good a device it is. There's enough room for more than one hand held games console.

yes...chrono trigger was a great game for the SNES in 1995. It was even better 4 years later when it was re-release on the PS 1 with anime cutscenes.
Or if you didn't want to buy it, you could have played it for free by downloading ROMS.

6 - DS
Is a sales monster. Didn't they have an article on this site that said psp's are used more as multimedia devices than gaming machines? But Nintendo has always owned the handheld market, thanks to Gunpei and the gameboy. The DS will pass the ps2 in ltd sales, and it deserves it. It began as a "casual fad" and now it has the most diverse library ever. Ppl claiming they aren't in the same market? are you kidding me? PSP is doing well for the loser though.

I wonder if some of these alleged stars have something to do with it? Don't get me wrong the DS is a good machine and I'm kind of regretting just blatently giving it to the parents to play with, but I'm starting to think various stories of actors coming out and saying they love their DS. Not to mention the easiness that lays within' the DS itself, combined with the games that are coming out for it just as well (Imagine babiez, Petz, etc.) People just eat those games up so it's probably all of those combined and perhaps a few minor things that made the DS what it is today and continue to grow, only question is will they eat up the DSI just as well?

8 - Nintendo won the handheld market because..............
It has the only reasonable priced handheld for 15 years. I wasn't until the portable consumer electronics created a demand for something other than games that the PSP was able to come out.

10 - Dumb
The DS is a very diffent handheld just like Wii. That's why you never hear about it in the "console war," which is between the PS3 and 360.
I love the DS for all the old school 2d games, but prefer my PSP for it's almost PS2 quality games like Monster Hunter

10.1 - Sure
You never hear about the Wii because its destroying the competition. And when you see the amount of sales its winning by, it makes the bickering and b!tching from sony and m$ fans seem silly when they discuss differences of 40k or 100k units. Ppl need to stop being delusional, DS is winning the handheld market, hell, it is DESTROYING the psp inj the handheld market. Wii is damn near at 50% market share of the console market, what more does it take to constitute "winning"?

Two reasons
1. Launching the original Gameboy with handheld versions of popular NES franchises
2. Pokemon

By having something that's actually unique. (like the wii) Touchscreen is a cool feature, as is dual-screening. Will it see off Apple? They're probably laughing at Apples attempts...
