25 Best Video Game Songs Ever

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Earlier this month, Rolling Stones created an interesting list about music and video games and interesting it was. Billboard decided to follow and cash-in as well by creating their own list, "Top 25 Best Video Game Songs" with Rage Against The Machine's "Bull on Parade" rated #1.

These are great songs to play to, but original video gaming compositions were not included. Video games is a rising industry and music plays an integral part of a game design from 'The Legend of Zelda' series in its early NES days to hip-hop used in the GTA series.

... I feel Shenmue's soundtrack should ALWAYS be in the top 5 of any 'best videogame music' list.

I'm not a Halo fan AT ALL, but the music in Halo 1 was terrific.

The format allows you to view the music videos and provide video gaming info. for each song on the list. How hard is it really to click, NEXT. Are you that lazy, Mr. Director?

This list failed to deliver. I don't agree with this list, its not a real video game song list. There are so many talented musicians that are not given credit just caue they are not part of a popular act. Music in video games plays an integral part to the video game itself.

I have to agree with you. Clicking next is annoying. It's not about being lazy Mia it's about not wanting to load 25 pages worth of subpar list. Of course we're not too lazy to push a button repeatedly, we're gamers.

Apparently the listmakers have only played only 3 game series'. Pffft these I consider songs that appeared in video games, not video game songs. This list would make my 25 worst "best lists" list. Of course unlike them I wouldn't start with number 1 and then go backwards when u hit next.

Games with great soundtracks. What a topic. I think the Star Ocean series has great music. On top of that, one of the best soundtracks to date is Chrono Cross. And let's not forget the Lunar series. Some of the best composed music to date.

The MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4 theme songs are still my favorites.

What the hell is the point of taking music from Rock Band, Guitar Hero and other games that use ''real world'' music? And I completely disagree with the story description when it says video games must start using this kind of music.

Bring on some Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, SotC, Zelda, Okami. They're even better than what's listed in this article.

Oh well at least they're not gamers. They're in the (much less awesome) music industry.

most underrated:

LittleBigPlanet (i wasn't paying attention at first but now i've fallen in love with a lot of the tunes, a great varied selection!)
Assassin's Creed (beautiful ambient, atmospheric stuff, i think it even won some award)
Oblivion (same as above minus the award)
Bully (TOTALLY AWESOME JAMS! Shawn Lee rules)

Exception made of Tony Hawk games which had great track lists, who can ever forget hearing Billie Jean when you enter a car for the first time in GTA Vice City, good times. This is not really about videogame music though.

What about the music from Cactus's games (SpaceF*ck, Msoids, SeisureDome) or from 8bit Killer by Locomalito or EVE Online or CaveStory?

He/She/It (aka. the author of the article) should have called the list "The 25 Videogame Songs I Like the Best".

16 - What the hell kind of list is that?
I know many above have already said it, but this isn't a "videogame songs" list, this is a "videogame soundtrack" list. there's a huge difference.

But with that, the list itself is...repetitive. Have billboard readers and writers only played Tony Hawk, GTA, and GH3? very limited list...

The biggest surprise to me, however, was that the list opened at #1, and I was just expecting to see "Halo Theme" (not saying it is the best gaming song ever, but in this time, it usually does top the list) but instead I see "Bulls on Parade" by Rage Against The Machine. Nothing can describe the state of confusion I was in...
