Multiplayer or Single Player?

The Playstation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube era was primarily focused on single player gaming. Of course, Socom and Halo had many online players, but the majority of gamers were still playing games for the single player experience. However, it is apparent that multiplayer gaming is on the rise over the past few years and much has changed within the current generation.

1 - I don't like this trend.
As much as I like multiplayer games I don't want every game to be multiplayer.
Not every game needs it, with that much time put into working on the multiplayer with betas and all the tooling for communtity, I honestly think a bigger and better single player game could've been made.
Multiplayer should be secondary, not primary in game design and lets have some bloody splitscreen offline co-op action back.

Besides most multiplayer games live off the same rules over and over again, with the same gametypes. Its like every game is just copying off each other. Maybe I don't want to join a clan or a group.

Well said. Its sux that every game seems to have to have online multiplayer otherwise it gets b*tched about for lacking it. I thought it was a brave and great move to make Bioshock SP only and look how that turned out.

I am also for co-op split screen, I'd much rather be a team with my real friends sitting right next to me. You cant beat it.

Also, and this is something no often discussed, I believe the biggest area for improvement in games is the AI. Graphics are so good now, they will get better, but theres not that much room to move. AI on the other hand could improve leaps and bounds, in ways we haven't even thought of yet but this multiplayer focus will hamper this I believe. Too much effort and resourses going into another round of deathmatching when they could be improving AI for the single player.

Prediction: This topic is going to be atleast 1000 degrees.

I usually prefer single player to multiplayer with the exception of one game. A game called Impossible Creatures that I played online for nearly 2 years. I got attached to the community, met tons of people and rose to the top of the small rankings. It was an amazing experience. People play multiplayer for the friendship and for the fact that it is unpredictable. You're not playing against the computer on a level that is the same every time you play it. This being said I still love my single player experience.

One of the main reasons why I don't play the Wii at all is because it has no online. The online they have now is basically having no online at all. It's so bad that they should just get rid of it and not have an "online".

Games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted,Mass Effect, Heavenly Sword, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and GTA 4 still embrace excellent stories. Along with Heavy Rain and GoW3 when they're eventually released. Other then that, there aren't many stories this gen that are that good at all.

Im and old school gamer from the days where gaming mean getting away from people.
I almost never play online.
I see the fun in it but i really prefer offline single player experiences.
I mean even resident evil 5 has tacked on a co-op mode.
Zombies arent scary with friends =(.

2 - Fallout Factor
It's scary to imagine it, but I believe that only RPG's will remain rich single player games. Games like Fallout 3 don't HAVE multiplayer, nor do they need it.

on the other hand, and flame me if you want for this - I would have paid $60 for JUST the Gears of War 2 multiplayer experience...

Playing CoD4 Multiplayer provided some the finest and best moments in my entire history of playing video games.

With that said though, I still thoroughly enjoy SP games and I don't want to see them die off.

4 - Single player wha.. ?
It's unfortunate that one of the greatest things to ever happen to gaming (online multiplayer) is also one of the worst. As of late it takes quite a bit to get me to buy a game without online support. And if a game has stellar online play i.e. COD 4, I wont even run through the single player campaign. I'd have to say that co-op is the saving grace of the campaign mode. Because I'm almost certain to run through a campaign if it has co-op.

i do have to admit im a sucker for both types. i think a time should come when single and multiplayer games should be equal but somewhat mutually exclusive. there are rare instances when the single player campaign of a strongly multiplayer game is intriguing, but for the most part the single player is no where near as gripping as it could be if the developers didnt shoehorn the multiplayer in.

maybe multiplayer games should all go the way of the mmo and single player should be the 100+ hour "experience," emphasis necessary, that we all need from time to time. There are already achievements(trophies) for those who want to compare their single player skills with others.

5.1 - Length of the SP
You touched on one of my main concerns, that MP is shortening the SP campaigns. Some SP campaigns are now 10 hours or so. And they seem to be getting shorter.

I want longer SPs and solid MP if it is warranted.

I want it all and I want it now.

a 10 hour single player campaign isnt a game, its an expansion pack. if i can play through the entire story in a normal workday, somebody has dropped the ball.

The amount of Single Player games will more than likely lessen, but I hope that they all don't disappear.

I think that Single Player games can continue to thrive, but ONLY if the length of the game is there and plenty of re-playability because most Single Player games tend to be short (excluding RPG's) and have little replay value. For Single Player games to continue to remain relevant, I think that they need to be at LEAST 20-25 hours minimum because if not more and more people are just going to end up renting them.

To me, the story in a game and character development adds depth to the game....For me the story adds meaning to the game and a game with a good story really connects me to the game, but multiplayer just doesn't do that to me.

Some of most celebrated games have only been Single Player (Zelda Ocarina of Time, ICO, Shaodw of the Colossus, God of War, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X, etc... and the list just goes on. Single Player games have become much more less important this generation, but Single Player games have left their mark in history and I think that there will always be a market for them and I'm one of the people that will continue to support them.

9 - Single Player for the WIN!!!!
Now, I like multiplayer as well but I think gaming is for getting away from the world and people. I think developers or focuseing too much on multiplayer nowdays. Games that should have never got MP has it now. Look at MGS4...there was no need for MGO. I would have much prefferd a longer game than MGO. They should have put all the money and effort into MGS4 single player that they put into MGO. Also GTA4 doesn't need MP as well. It's a great single player game. Turok...why did they create a MP in there is beyond me. I hope that developers stop with this madness and focus more on single player...that is the most important for me.

In order:

#1 Single Player
#2 Single Player
#3 Single Player
#4 Split-Screen multiplayer (like COD4/5, Resistance 1/2)
#5 Online Multiplayer.

That's my opinion.

But this is how developers are looking at it:

#1 Online MP
#2 Online MP
#3 Online MP
#4 Online MP
#5 Single-player
#6 slipt-screen (wich is very rear nowdays)

Sad....but true.

Multiplayer modes are easy outs for Developers to cut quality in the SP modes. By having a MP mode and a short SP mode they think the price is still justified cause you're getting Multiplayer.

If MP was axed from the game the SP would've had more treatment and been longer, had more polish to it and probably better graphics. Since MP was included the game has short comings to both SP and MP modes.

I did a write up on my site about this and said that the best alternative would be to have 3 sku's

1 - just the SP mode on a disc and sell it for 30
2 - just the MP mode on a disc or download and sell it for 30
3 - have the collectors eidtion with both modes on the disc and sell it for 60.

That is the only way I can see supporting the industry on ward. I don't need to have MP in everygame and don't even play 95% of the MP games I've got. Why should I or you pay 60 bucks if that is now making uo half the game?

Like xbox owners crying about Sony making us pay for blu-ray... Developers are making us pay for Multiplayer.

Sounds like a good idea. I would use Warhawk and Socom as examples of the right approach to multi-player only games. Drop single player for a reduced price. Personally I don't like games that cater to both audiences as, like you said, it reduces the overall quality of the title. I felt this is what happened with Resistance 2. Even though I am thoroughly enjoying it, I think the single player campaign suffered because of the resources allocated to the multi-player experience. Games that are a complete package with "complete" online and offline experiences take years to make, and cost a ridiculous amount of money.

MGS4 and Bioshock say singleplayer is better

...and Portal
...and SotC
...and Okami
...and Fallout 3
...and Deus Ex
...and Starcraft (campaign)
...and Thief
...and Resident Evil 4
...and Ocarina of Time
...and Grim Fandango!

But, you know, multiplayer also has some pretty great games like Starcraft, Unreal Tournament, Gmod (woohoo), L4D, Counter-Strike, etc...

They're all great games but I just think singleplayer is more important

Sure Multi player games are great fun and have their place but I would 100% rather play a good offline game because no matter what you do there are always gonna be people online that you don't want to deal with. You know who I speak of. There is no real way to rid yourself of them. For those saying use the Mute button that's not the point you still have to hear them before you mute them and you shouldn't have to play in a environment in which 75% of the people you come across will be muted.

Maybe I'm not a very sociable person, but I rarely use online multiplayer. If I feel like gaming with others, I'll invite my close friends on and we will game with the split screen. Infinitley more fun than jumping into a lobby with a bunch of people you don't know. It is very unfortunate that the split screen aspect of games is starting to disappear.

Personally, I prefer single player games. I'm the type of gamer that likes to hold video games on the same platform as film. Many video game stories are excellent, and because games are much longer than films, I become more attached to the characters.

I enjoy a good multiplayer experience as well, but nothing will replace a solid single player game with a good story for me. I hope that there is always a good selection of single player games to play through. I just don't want developers to feel like they have to add multiplayer, or the game won't do well.

Well lets face it multiplayer games are more time consuming than single player, look at Uncharted for example, I expended about 20 hours with that game and on the other hand I've played about 1000h of Warhawk.
Both games are very good but for me Warhawk and other mp games just give you more for your money, but I do have to say that I miss off line and split screen multiplayer because I love to play them with my sons

Wow, all of you work for developers? I had no idea you all had such insights as to why campaign modes were shorter these days. It has nothing to do with the games costing more to make and everything to do with MP replacing single player to make up for it lacking? And here I thought Gears of War's MP was almost eliminated (which would explain it's lack of depth) but kept on in the 11th hour.

ANYWAY, I like both and I can tell you that I will play the campaign first before I play the MP.
