Will PSN finally get custom avatars?

So why on the PlayStation Network are we forced to choose from a set of 200 + avatars, most of which are horrible and no one would actually want to use? The offering Sony has given us certainly doesn't represent us gamers, or PlayStation fans at all. Sure there are some bearable avatars out there, like the Motorstorm avatar, or a Nathan Hale avatar, but since they are the only decent avatars, it's not uncommon for 15 of your PSN friends to have the same exact avatar as you."

This very well could mean PSN avatars. That is from the official PS Blog

But I am not claiming any of this to be true. It is just a speculation editorial. Read the article I don't claim anything to be fact.

I had posted a similar presumption on the PS forums. Good article though. I don't think Lord Anubis knows what's going on here.

It's really not that complex. Playstation.com not getting avatars - they are being stripped. He is speculating that the PSN will be getting expanded or custom avatar capability, which would now be reflected on Playstation.com.

In addition, I have a feeling *rumor* that trophy integration is coming to the portable ID as well.

From the article comments - someone mentions the implementation of trophy-based avatars. This would be incredible and a real blow to the competition that charges for premium avatars. Really, this would be pretty neat.

Im a fan of making my own animated GIF avatars. Would be nice if that where possible and it showed on PSN, PS site, and PSN gamercard. Getting gamercards up to the level of live gamercards should be first priority after home is released.

The person to get the first screenshots for Trophy was a Sony Europe employee posting in both Gamefaqs and NeoGaf forums. Playstation lifestyle of course stole it, made it seem like they had the insider info and posted it in N4G thus making you all think that they posted it first

as for Bioshock, i saw the video posted showing the titlescreen and 2.40FW @ both PS3Fanboy.com and NeoGaf

3.1 - LBP paving the way for custom content...

Maybe LBP paved the way with allowing PSeye to do more than any other game...

People haven't really seemed to abuse the system yet.

The one thing PSN is missing is simple reporting via the PSN on PS3. You can do it online via PC. But until it becomes EASIER to do on PS3, I don't see this happening.

It'd be great if it were true cause the avatar system is a joke on the PSN. I doubt it will change, though and the reason why is because there are too many idiots running around trying to be "JOE COOL" and show their ass off.

We'd be seeing an influx of porn and naked men due to all the H*MO users on the network not wanting to be normal. This ruins it for all of us who are normal.

I'd kill for my Rubix cube avatar, though. I mean, it's my trademark. It's who I am... why not allow me to use that? Why dictate why I can't be me online?

Personally that shot at the G@Y gamers on the network is really not nessessary, and thats quite one sided. you would have been alright with just saying that there would be an influx in pornographic avatars. for the simple fact that there are people who like to abuse the system, but dont jsut narrow it down to G@Ys because there are Straight guys and girls who would do it just to be obscene. you were all inclusive with the statement of just influx in porn. as i recall, there are plenty of females on the network, and just saying G@ys would ruin it simply means you wouldn't mind ladies showing off there boobs and kooch and ass as there avatars which basically makes you look like an indecent gamer.

still i agree this new venture should sony deside to persue it will open up another portal for obsence gestures which quite frankly i wouldn't want my kid or anybody else's kid to see. i've seen way too many penis and vagina levels in LBP to knowthat this would be abused. Just dont atke a onesided veiw and call out another lifestyle and blame it on them. thats not nessessary

psn needs like 2 times the amount of avatars. Creating ur own could be problematic especially since some love to offend out here so its more sterile how it is currently yes but its also safer. Maybe a submission process. Create ur own and send it in. Implementing this would be a pain but i cant see any other way nor am i paid to do so.

9 - I'd be happy with a new batch of 'official' avatars every once in a while. Like with every weekly update.

Devs already make custom wallpapers & themes (XMB) to promote their games, so it really wouldn't require much work (I think) to make like 5-10 avatars featuring the game's main characters.

I mean, how come there aren't any MGS4, LBP, MS: PR or R2 avatars? I mean, wtf? There isn't a Solid Snake avatar...I mean, COME ON, how hard can it be?!

I just don't get it honestly...

I really believe that sony is missing out on an opportunity. I think ps fans would love having like a lbp theme pack. Throw 5 or 6 different sackboys up in a picture pack. Add the new lbp costumes to get people pumped up for them. Maybe then people will purchase the new costumes.

Or just screengrabs in general. You should be able to screengrab your Home Avatar, or use your own photos, to create a personal Icon and upload that to the PSN servers. Maybe 100x100 pixels in size?
