So, How Much Space Do Your 360 Games Installs Take Up?

Kotaku: The New Xbox Experience lets you install 360 games onto your HDD. Great news for anyone - like myself - who gets DISC READ ERRORS as often as the sun both rises and sets. But chances are, unless you splurged and bought yourself an Elite, or are new to the 360 world and own a 60GB unit, you have a 20GB HDD. And for you, space is at a premium. So you need to know how much room the installs actually take up, so you can get prioritising.

Know before you start, however, that if you own a 20GB unit, Blue Dragon - at 19.9 GB - isn't going to fit. Nor is Lost Odyssey, at a whopping 23.2 GB. And if you own Crackdown or DoA Beach Volleyball 2, you won't be able to install them at all. The feature is "not supported" for those titles. Same goes for the Burger King titles Big Bumpin', Sneak King, and Pocketbike Racer, as well as the version of Quake II that came with Quake IV.

Everything else, though? You can install it. And here's how much they take up, courtesy of Sean & the kids @ NeoGAF:

1.3 - just upgraded
I scored a new retail 120gb drive for $90 from Target. It took an hour to migrate all my stuff from the 20gb to it. I have to try out lost odyssey (picked that up for $15 from target as well).

I am really diggin this NXE. Was watching 6 episodes of 30 rock the other night. Can't believe I am missing out on such a funny show...not anymore thanks to instant viewing.

1.4 - Kinda useless, I'm afraid.
I've got a 20 GB launch console. With one Xbox original game installed, map packs for COD2, Oblivion's expansion pack I only have room for one games install on my unit - and right now that's Fable 2 at 6.8GB. I'm now left with about 500 mb, not even enough room to rent a movie on XBL without ditching something. And so far, I'm not positive but I don't think my Fable load times are any better.
Should I upgrade my harddrive? Hell no. Between the cost of my console, XBL, battery packs, wi-fi adapter and extra controllers I'm over $900 into this console and I'm on my 4th unit with a warranty that has now expired. No freakn way I'm putting any more money into this system. If it dies on me now I'm trading in my games, controllers and wi-fi adapter and moving on with my life. The PS3 has enough games now rated 75% and up on metacritic to keep any gamer occupied for 3 years or more. xbl gamertag: DarkrideHex66

As a 20GB owner, the slight benefit isn't worth it to me. Hell, you only have 13GB available. I'm just can't see myself paying $100 for 60GB or $150 for 120GB.

Why not get another 20gb hdd for cheap and switch between them so in effect you have 40GB

1 for music and movies
1 for installed games

2.2 - @Shadowghost
The problem with that Shadowghost is that he would need more than just 1 extra drive. Like the article states, titles like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey (and I presume any other RPG) will be more than the drive can store. It's too limited in essence. Even if they were only 5-10 gigs, at most he could put 2 on each. (However, I dont know for sure if the extra 20 gig needs to be formatted again to hold the necessary files for the 360 so that it is actually 13 gigs)

Well Shadow that doesn't work because you have to recover your Gamertag each time you swap an HDD. You may be able to have your profile on a memory card and do it like that. Not sure about that.

where are all the ppl hating the ps3......for having installs?.....well anyway....i see no point in this....if u have a 20 gb xbox....ur talking 2, maybe 3 games tops....so u'll have to go out and buy you a 120 gb eventually.......at which point u probably already matched the ps3's price point.....hm.....so much for a cheaper console.

5.4 - every ps3 can play every single ps3 game
not every 360 can play every single 360 game. Ill point to burnout p online. Yes mandatory installs can be annoying but at least every single ps3 has a hdd. If your trying to tell me that waiting for installs is an issue like you used to b4 the nxe then you are quite the hypocrite especially since you too will have to wait and i suppose because its your 'choice' it somehow makes it better on the 360. When we were saying that you just have to manage the space we were ridiculed but now you're all space management masters perfectly managing blocks of space like tetris.

Installs ARE and always HAVE been a good thing for gaming performance when done right. We cannot have consoles closer to pc's yet not inherit some of their advantages and disadvantages as thats illogical. Even the stupid installs like dmc4 increased performance even though the install time probably outweighed the time saved through in game loading but capcom were still coming to grips with the ps3 then.

"Unlike those people that bought a PS3(20GB, 40GB)... who were completely ignorant about the fact that games were going to have mandatory installs."

dude 20g owners (a minute amount of the ps3's out there) still have space. What about the ignorant 360 core guys by your own logic. You say some stupid things man cause i would more call them misinformed plus please list ALL of the millions of "Mandatory" installs please since ur such an expert.....

5.6 - jenzo and bladestar
their not all mandatory.....so u fail on that one.....and more importantly, i played gta4 on the 360 first then on ps3 with the install....and there is most definitely a difference.....but even so....the point is i get an install that enhances the performance of my game and not totally craps on the space that i have, on a console that makes me pay over 100 for 120gb of space(bladestar, 80 bucks gets me 320gb internally so shut up).....i modded my first xbox so i could put entire games on there.....4-5gb each....this is stupid...they know genius ppl will go out and buy the hdd....ur just naive and stubborn.....deadly combination...so no matter how u want to spin it, im spending less money than u for something that works more efficiently.

Mandatory or not... You guys are dissing Ps3 for its 1GB-4GB installs on our STOCK HDD.... And all users will want to install their games on the xbox to save the faulty DVD drive and lower the heat index and make your jumbo jet run quieter and they will be using more HDD Space than PS3 users... so dont act like PS3 has something bad going on.

Sony gave the PS3 harddrives because of installs - is it so bad that it is used for that?? Snap out of it.

We have heard enough of your spin garbage.

Ok, then show me proof where you play Bioshock without the 5 gig install.

Or MGS4.

Or how you play Devil May Cry 4 without installing it first.

I can provide sources that back up my statements.

Jenzo, Sony gives all users a HDD for installs. You are wrong on so many levels with your way of thinking. With a console with a HDD provided in every unit, I do not see the big deal with installs, especially with gaming these days. You named single player games. People play them, delete saves and trade them in.

You can keep trying, but you all lose. Your arguments are pointless.

nah mate. You need a hdd for online play. EA are big so they didnt need to bend to MS's self inflicted pressure of no game ever needing a hdd.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsS...

cheers Jenzo

He has listed 3 games that have mandatory installs. There may be what, 6 at most out of how many games???? Please dont make a mountain out of a molehill.

@IdleLee

"20-30 minute install" theres only 1 game that goes over 20 total minutes (mgs4) and dmc4 that takes about that so where are the ever increasing titles you speak of?

Sony didn't give you a drive just to install games, but also to store media, downloadable content, new Operating System and more.

I own a 40GB PS3 and I'm not happy that I might have to upgrade the drive in the near future. Unless I want to do a 20-30 minute install everytime I want to play certain games (which is becoming increasingly more of).

Both consoles have faults, but don't complain about optional features. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard....

Don't know why so many people disagree with an added optional feature? Would you prefer that MS gave you less features? The only ones I can see agreeing with that are fanboys! Happy gaming!!!

5.14 - Do we really want to compare HDDs?
For 109.99 US (and maybe even cheaper) I can buy a 320 gig HDD for my PS3...right now I already have a 160 gig HDD which is more than the 360 is capable....What size HDD do you get for 109.99 for the XBOX...60gig...That's right...60 gig and the most you can get is 120gig...how many games can you install on that (considering the 360 installs the entire disc which is 6-7 gigs worth per game)...the PS3 is only 1-2 gigs and has a potentially limitless HDD storage capacity

6 - Lets see
I had 99 Gigs Free before NXE.

Installed:

-Fallout 3
-Fable 2
-Gears of War 2
-Lost Odyssey 4th Disk
-Infinite Undiscovery (2 disks)
-Mass Effect
-Bioshock
-Madden NFL 2009

I have about 10 XBL DEMOS/GAMES

Left with 38.9 Gigs Free(Of course everything is OPTIONAL)

Is there a way to check the Xbox HDD and it's file System? then I could really be Exact.

Also how do you ERASE old themes you do not want?

morganfell - 401 days 2 hours ago
6.1 -
You have an error. The reason is your total game install size is 74.7GB. Do the math. 99 before NXE minus 74.7 in installs = 24.3GB

-Fallout 3 (5.9 GB)
-Fable 2 (6.8 GB)
-Gears of War 2 (6.7 GB)
-Lost Odyssey 4th Disk (23.2 GB for all discs: 5.8, 5.2, 6.3, and 6.2)
-Infinite Undiscovery (2 disks) (12.5 GB for both discs, disc 1 6GB disc 2 6.5GB)
-Mass Effect (6.8 GB)
-Bioshock (6.1 GB)
-Madden NFL 2009 (6.7 GB)

Did you look at your disk size AFTER NXE but BEFORE installs? Maybe NXE compressed some of the old data.

There is a way but I am not sure exactly what it is called. Pull up your menu by pressing the XBOX logo on the controller and scroll to the last section to the right. From there you should be able to find what you are looking for.

To erase old themes go to the Memory section in the System blade of the 360 dashboard. You should see a theme category where you can erase the old ones you don't want.

12 - Well..
If I would consider a XB360 - best would be at least 160GB. At least with PS3 i can buy a new 320GB and without any hassles install it. With XB360 you must make your purchase of HD option from the start - otherwise you are gonna pay through your nose.

Interesting that Kotaku now admits to read errors. But this should solve this issue - as well as the noisy drives issues. Good for XB360 owners to have this. Enjoy.
