Xbox 360 is three, first warranties expire

Microsoft's Xbox 360 hit three years of age this last weekend, following its original release in the US and Canada on Nov 22, 2005.

European gamers were treated to our new toy a couple of weeks later on December 2, 2005 (and our Japanese cousins collectively shrugged when it was launched over there on December 10,2005).

Despite its much-reported problems with overheating (the dreaded 'Red Ring of Death') the machine is still the under-TV box of choice for the hardcore console gamer.

My only question is whether or not the new machines (the ones made after June/July of this year) are still getting RRoD....I know that RRoD is still happening, but are the new ones as susceptible?

does a PS2 eventually have a disc read error?

I seriously hope the people going out of warranty don`t have a problem although 3 years was still a decent coverage for a prolem they admitted they had. What a huge f*ck up the RROD is on MS`s behalf. Hopefully it won`t get any worst then it already is, it could only hurt the industry as a whole.

take down the sword champ, I had issues with my PS1`s and 2`s and I am not alone. At least MS has admitted to the mega f*ck up.

P.S. I still LOVE the playstation brand.

I had to buy three PS2's because of Disc Read Error's. Don't you dare act like that wasn't a problem you tool.

Sony did provide extended warranties just like Microsoft so I can't fault either of them.

@Montrealien

Interesting situation actually. After my PS2 broke down I decided not to buy another one.Kept playing my PC,Gamecube and Xbox and did not regret a thing.I did not buy another PS2 because I don't pay companies to keep making junk hardware.Buying the same hardware again is signs of complacency with corporate failure.

If my 360 gets RROD one more time,or my PS3 or Wii also screw up I'm not buying another on of them.I will just move on to something else.Like I said, its best not to spend your money on a manufacturer that has let you down.

Meanwhile my Gamecube,Xbox,N64,and my Genesis live on to this day...not my Dreamcast though :(

I hope someone understands my point.

Montrealien,

The PS2 disc drive errors were no where as a big issue as the RROD is and to me the 2 situations can't even be compared. Microsoft f*cked up big time with the 360 because they supposedly already knew of the 360's faults before shipping them out and they had no choice but to offer a 3 year warranty.

My first PS2 had no issues what so ever, but I bought a second PS2 and within 4 months it stopped reading discs. My PS2 was still covered under the 1 year warranty and Sony fixed it for free and I haven't had ANY problems with that same PS2 going on 6 years now and it still works perfectly to this day.

Bringing up PS1/PS2 problems against the RROD is almost irrelavant because the RROD is WAY more widespread and I doubt that the PS2's had a 33% failure rate.

not trying to defend MS in any way when it comes to RRoD(even due i never had that problem thank god. and i have a launch 360) but i went thru 3 ps2's. two of which i had to pay out my pocket to get repaired. but to sit here and say that sony didn't have that high of a failure rate is stupid. first off ps2's sold more than the current user-base of the 360.so 1) sony never announced the failure rate. so noone know if it's high or low.2) alot of people took the matter in their own hands and found a fixs without having to pay sony for repairs.3) sony remodel the ps2 to a slimmer one. and that console had DRE issues. so if you take into account both versions of PS2'S you would see that sony is just as bad as MS.

wow, thx for clearing that up for me guys...

playstation is perfect, 360 has bigger issues that nul the playstation ones. What was I thinking.

/sarcasm off

1- I am aware the 360 RROD problems are much much worst then the playstation prolems but I was able to look at it with a little understanding, companies f*ck up. MS f*cked up BIG time and I was able to look past it this gen simply because the original Xbox was such an amazing piece of hardware, if their next console has an issue like RROD I wont take it so lightly.

2- I like to use the playstations problems as an example of consoles having issues when stories like this pop up. Sony also had issues with the playstations in the past, where also taken to court for them and survived and never lost me as a customer. They clearly lerned from their mistakes and that is why the PS3 is one of the best consoles ever made. Hopefully MS will learn from this HUGE mistake also, let`s not forget, thay have been making hardware for only 8 years.

I usually respect allot of things you say but I just want to know why you would say that you didn't buy another PS2 when it broke because of faulty hardware but continue with your 360 after it RROD maybe I'm reading what you said is wrong but that's what I got.

".After my PS2 broke down I decided not to buy another one.Kept playing my PC,Gamecube and Xbox and did not regret a thing.I did not buy another PS2 because I don't pay companies to keep making junk hardware.Buying the same hardware again is signs of complacency with corporate failure."

then you go on to say..."If my 360 gets RROD one more time,or my PS3 or Wii also screw up I'm not buying another on of them.I will just move on to something else.Like I said, its best not to spend your money on a manufacturer that has let you down."

So if it s free you'll look past the faulty hardware I'm not trying to bash you or call you out as a fanboy or anything I'm just looking at what you said and don't understand how you contradict what you say.

The PS2 problems were fixable by yourself and they also did not render the systems useless normally. Once the 360 gets the RRoD your console is done unless you do the towel trick to extend it 2 weeks. Also stop talking about last generation. Microsoft should have learned from the PS2 issues and also the xbox did not have this many problems, so basically Microsoft is the one who went backwards. The point is Sony learned and the PS3 almost has no issues.

It's a matter of severity.
Rarely, in the PS2 days, did anyone say to themselves, "I won't buy the Playstation 2 because of DRE."
Often nowadays, people say (and outloud), "I won't buy the XBOX360 because of RRoD."

Regarding Q&A, bugs often aren't left in games/hardware because Q&A didn't find them. Bugs are left in the mix because developers/producers feel that issues are too costly (time/money) to fix, or that the issues are too minor to be fixed.

Excellent "Fight Club" quote:
A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now: should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.

1.16 - I have another question....
"My only question is whether or not the new machines (the ones made after June/July of this year) are still getting RRoD...."

I have a friend who had to return his launch 360 3 times (2XRRoD and 1Xcannot read disk). He is all happy because the last one happen only a few months ago, so he claims that he has another 3 years warranty.

I'm telling him the 3 years warranty is simply from the first day he bought his original 360.

So who's right: Does he has 2years and 9 months warranty left, or is he totally screwed if the 360 die again tomorrow?

microsoft knew they were putting into production a faulty machine and also fired the guy who spilled the beans on microsofts attitude to the now infamous RROD it is their duty to extend the warranties for all 360 owners as consumers are still experiencing rrod

microsoft EXTEND THE WARRANTY FOR 360 OWNERS

As warranties expire, watch existing owners go out and buy more new boxes.

This is why I still don't have one. The day it's confirmed that there's a model that doesn't RROD, I'll be picking up a 360, with every game that I missed.

It's been 3 years already..seriously where did the time go? Consoles usually have a life span of 5-6 years so we are already atleast past the half way mark till the next xbox...

I still remember the day i bought my first xbox on launch day. It was awsome. MS rented this huge Club in Toronto and it was packed with people and playable games such as King Kong, COD2 and NHL07. There was a life size Master cheif walking around and a really hot Joanna Dark walking around...Good times

Definitely,'cause after it expires you have to pay $150 to get it fixed, and I'm sure no one wants to have to pay over a hundred bucks to get their console fixed when they can get it fixed for free!

11.1 - the reason is....
Back in 2000/01 it was all the talk. DRE on the PS2 was a huge deal regardless of what is the actual numbers were (official/unofficial). You need a comparative point in time to relate and this is that situation all over again. Except now there is fuel in the form of a percentage of failures.

Every piece of mechanical hardware will have failures. How much is dependent on the problem and how viral the numbers spread. PS2 had problems, do we really know the percentage? Not likely as that is something Sony probably does not want to disclose. Disclosure of something like that is at the companies discretion.

I don't know if the 30%+ rate is MS official statement or something the media whipped up but it is the "key" point in any RROD arguement. Sad really. People should just get to playing the games for the system they have instead of trying to beat down the ones they don't.

LOL more sony lovers are worried about RROD than 360 users. Both my consoles are from 2006 so have another year on that. Ps3 users should talk less and buy more games. Sales of games are not even reaching 500k for R2 and LBP.
