1 - It doesn't really matter
So long as people are registered to use the sole service that is the PSN,then there's nothing to get worked up over

Just like Microsoft counts Silver (i.e not able to use Live) members in their counts for Xbox LIVE members...

What?

To give actual number of users signed up with Unique accounts for PSN?

Yes, how typical.

PSN isn't a PS3 exclusive service.

yeah thats why its Called "PLAYSTATION Network" instead of "Playstation 3 Network" Its not exclusive to one console. and alot of people who have PSP's have a PS3.

@ GWAVE: What on earth are you talking about?!?! Microsoft always states gold subscribers connected to Live, they rarely state Silver accounts, they make it clear they are referring to Gold subscribers when sending out numbers.

Please provide a SINGLE quote from Microsoft where they provide numbers for "gold" accounts. You won't find any cause they never mention the gold/silver type. There are no numbers from Microsoft regarding the actual amount of silver vs gold users cause Microsoft only ever releases "Xbox Live subscriptions" which naturally includes gold subscriptions, silver subscriptions AND Live4Windows PC subscriptions.

And thats neither false, nor "evil" nor anything else. It is just that the PR department will always use the biggest number. And considering that the number DOES represent the whole XboxLive subscribers it is not false to use it.

Neither is it false or "evil" or whatever if Sony publishes their network numbers as "active PSN users". They never said "active PS3 PSN users", why should they. The vast majority of these accounts will be PS3 accounts. As PSP was only able to access the PSN and Store for about a month. And no one can convince me that there are 7 million users that registered for PSN via their PSP LAST MONTH. The only device that asked for a PSN signup from the start was the PS3.

Gwave: You can use Live just fine if you're a silver user. Certain games even let you play in matchmaking without a gold membership, Halo 3 being one of them.

@ Lumbo: http://kotaku.com/341399/xb...

As you can see they clealry out line "Paying" members and later go on to mention Silver members aren't included.

I found more on Yahoo and Major Nelsons site but their sites are currently down.

"And to the idiot that said Silver memberships can't use Live, you are completely wrong. I had a silver account last month and I could use Live no problem."

But there is one problem though. You have to give up $50 of your salary per Year if you want to play online games on XBL. So Silver memberships technically cant use live.

If your going to disagree at least comment on my post instead of just being a stupid fanboy who knows he is wrong.

And for a while, Silver accounts were able to play some games for free. $50 isn't that much, if it bothers you then you can buy a code digitally online for cheaper.

Its still tied to one IP address, which sony only counts, it doesnt matter if you have 2 accounts in each country if its one PS3 its one PS3 main account ID that is connected to 1 IP address.

not the IP address, but instead the first account registered on the PS3, which registers the MAC address of each unique PS3. That makes more sense than IP address as you can easily change it everytime you turn your router on.

Sony knows who you are and were you live based on your IP address. they can tell what service you are using, what region you live in, and what county you live in based on your IP address. Your IP address is basically like Home Address, but for the Internet.

5 - It's all about HOME.
HOME will force people to go online.. it will make people want to experience the online futures of the PSN. I think this will be the "Trojan Horse" if you well.. for the PSN. This is something that the competition doesn't have, and Sony can take a huge advantage of.

"The rep also said, to guard against duplication, Sony does not count a registration made on the PS3 and then used on the PSP (or vice versa) as two accounts. Like with Xbox Live, the figure also includes multiple accounts used on the same console or in the same household."

PSN is free and everyone is the same out the box. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was coming close to 10 million. It's a great and smart way to build up a user base for a brand new and young service.
Signing up to use the PSN is smoother and a lot easier then ever with the new redesign.
I wish Sony's PSN and Microsoft's XBL the best because it creates good competition which is good for us.

i find it funny how fanboys change when they are proven wrong. just go look at the thread when sony first said 14 million. and now look at some of the reactions. complete 180

@8.1

Your limited to the number of online accounts you can make on your 360. i believe the most is 3 per system.

haha actually I'm laughing my arse off. Yes, I invite people to go look at the 14mil PSN article and after reading this it's like a diary of fail.

It happens all the time and is great entertainment. My bro has 3 unique PSN id's on his one console and $ony count them all as unique accounts. The real number is no where near 14mil.

10 - only gold members count i think for xbl, which is still pretty impressive
considering that NEARLY 60 or so percent of the households on the east coast of the u.s is connected to the internet thru broadband, but on the flip side of it,when you log into psn and start folding,if you click on the channels you could see a vew of the earth and all the ps3's that are connected and folding and in telling you on the east coast of the u.s the earth lights up like a christmas tree, now THATS impressive

folding a home for the win,

peace and game on

Was there even any need to clarify?

The stated number was 14 million active PSN accounts. Has that number changed after the "clarification" ? No. It is still 14 million active PSN users. The only thing added was that yes, PSP PSN accounts are PSN accounts, too.

Considering that the PSP only got the PSN shop access last month and that you do not need ANY PSN account to use the internet on the PSP and that hardly any games for the PSP have an online mode i fail to see why the inclusion of PSP accounts is suddenly such a big issue. I don't believe that a huge number of PSP accounts exist today, the system lacks the online gaming features of the PS3 for most parts. Even 1% of the 14 million being pure PSP accounts would be a huge number imho.

13 - good thing sony doesn't add
ps2 into the PSN network.the landslide would destroy the town below with the amount of gamers on sony's network as a whole.

ps2/psp/ps3 together would bring the house down.

as for microsoft, they never say how many are silver or gold....EVER.and they never say how many members are still playing live using xbox 1.and never say how many were added from the PC side.

so sony should just add all online playstation members and tell us the number.then,we will hear microsoft change their toon to how many REALLY PAY FOR XBL ON 360 ONLY.

and they'll then say"look at how many next gen online members we have."

apocalypse................

That was so dishonest of Sony and everybody knows it. They claimed that they had reached 14 million users with the hope that people would assume that meant actual PS3 users who are actively gaming online. And that is exactly what happened. In the other thread, Ps3 fanboys were claiming left and right that it meant that the PS3 had as many users actively gaming online as the 360. But it turns out that the number is actually closer to 8.5 million, and that includes all the multiple accounts that most of us have (I have three). Then Sony realized they couldn't get away with that claim and had to modify it. But they are still not being totally honest and upfront.
