IGN: Face Off: Wii Miis vs. 360 Avatars

On Wednesday, Microsoft launched the New Xbox Experience, a complete graphical user interface overhaul for Xbox 360 that jettisons the console's tried-and-true Blade presentation for a sleek new configuration intended to be much more intuitive. Included in the NXE are the well-publicized Avatars, cartoony, virtual representations of gamers' real-world personalities. In other words, Miis, now with the coveted Bill Gates stamp of approval.

Although Microsoft revealed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2008 that second-party studio Rare had been working on 360's Avatar component for some time, it seems clear, based on the final product, that Nintendo's own user interface provided at least some influence. The big question is, now that IGN has had a chance to tool around with both options, which one is ultimately better? The answer is not quite so black and white.

this isn't about Home. home and NXE aren't the same, and i don't know why you seem to over credit and advertise sony in a Wii/360 section.........is it necessary?

1.3 - avatars all the way
you can't really do anything with Miis and they look stupid like eerie wooden 1950's childrens toys. And that guy is delusional if he thinks his Mii looks more like him than his Avatar. I lol'd at that part. The things fanboys will convince themselves. Does he have two balls for hands and wear a solid green shirt with a solid crap brown pair of pants with no feet? Is his face flat with drawn on one-dimensional features?

If so then maybe he should stop playing his Wii and join the circus and become the amazing stick figure man. Or maybe it's an instance of Wii fanboys resembling their Miis like people resemble their pets after awhile. Who knows what goes on in the crazy world of Nintendo fandom. These are the people who play Wii Music, afterall.

@Guns n Swords

Just ignore Morganell. Everyone else does. The guy was probably born with a PS3 up his butt.

Hey, Morganfell, Home isn't even out yet so get back in your corner until it is released, mm'kay? See you in 2011.

Wii wins since you can beat the snot out of the other person's mii! I hope M$ somehow copies this, which they probably will. Then Home will copy it but will have blood, cuts, and blackeyes, and your own coach and cutman.

Btw, Morganfell just copied what some people do about bringing Home up in the netflix articles being superior to PSN store.

i think they both win in different areas.
I like how simplistic the miis are and how they are integrated into some games
but i like the avatars for the great community they have which i wish Nintendo had some form of.

2.3 - So ...
are you saying that Nintendo came up with virtual characters? Even thought they are all over the internet, in DOA 4 and numerous other games? All Nintendo did was make a gimmick to put into their console feature set, yes, since Miis aren't really supported like avatars or home characters will be, I call it a gimmick and a cop out for character design.

Do you ever wonder what kind of characters Nintendo would have created for Wii Sports or anything that is Mii focused, if Miis didn't exist? I sure do.

Nintendo ripped off Miis too, everyone "rips off" everyone, it's a fact.

I mean for all we know the avatars could have came from the many virtual character ideas around the internet and game industry, so don't be so damn naive.

Ive been with it for 2 days now, there's a lot more innovation going on than wii, the way that they play there part in NXE adds a lot more to the interface, it's quite fun :)

So, they chose Miis? WTF?

They also said that Miis are more accurate. Are you kidding me? Sure if you want nubs for limbs and cartoony faces. It's obvious avatars are more accurate.

If they want to debate accuracy, HOME characters are the most accurate.

they chose wii's for their simplicity and to the point appearance.
They ultimately chose the avatars for its community which Nintendo is seriously lacking.

Bladestar did you not read the article too??
Matt said that you can make the appearance of your face more accurate then the avatars due to you being able to move and position eyes, nose, mouth etc, where they need to be.
The avatars do not give this option.
being able to recreate your face more accurately is more important to me then what you wear or having what blade thinks "fingers and hands".
The face is the most recognizable part of the body......not hands or "fingers".
Besides i like how you think you can "wear fingers or even hands" lol.

But the face you are left with still doesn't look anything like you with the Mii system. I didn't think that guy's Mii looked anything like him, did you? I mean, I would never see that Mii and go "hey look, it's dave" (or whatever the guy's name is). That's silly.

"But the face you are left with still doesn't look anything like you with the Mii system"
Question:
If you can move features of the face around(mii's do this),would that be more accurate then making a face without that feature(Avatars dont have this)?
Its a caricature.....nothing more you people are judging this like these are supposed to be realistic portraits.

15 - okay that's it !
its time to adress the children & send them to bed.

To: big shadow. If you really think avatars are human like then you've got some serious soul searching to do. Obviously you're more fruitied up than you know.

To: guns n swords. You've been with avatars for 2 days & already you are saying its more innovative than miis? I have a wii & there is chuck norris, michael Jackson , darth maul & countless of other innovative creations. You can't even create the perfect Jesus Christ with avatars. Nothing beats the miis in wii sports. NOTHING!

To: Spydiggity. Americans invented & japan has improoved upon it? America has spies as in C.I.A. & secret intelligence. As you can see in history its popular opinion vs. Fact. Fairy tales have been printed in American history books. I know, I'm a American. We steal, trademark & get filthy rich. Nintendo invented miis. End of Story.

I never seen a ghay retard boy until I've seen Avatars on 360. Miis are miis. Avatars just plain suck & you just pay month after month for it until it makes you buy some pants for it. YUCK!

Please don't disrespect the mii. It didn't make avatars, microsoft cloned it & horribly so. I want to see a babies arm stick out of its head because its another failed experiment.

15.1 - ...and what's your point?
"Please don't disrespect the mii. It didn't make avatars, microsoft cloned it & horribly so. I want to see a babies arm stick out of its head because its another failed experiment."

the avatars was made by "RARE" Ex Nintendo supporters, and as for avatars, XBL has a bigger online community, and to top it off avatars will no doubt get future updates, adding more and more customizations to it's list.

Miis are nice but they don't have the edge that avatars has, in both graphics and in potential.

It's not even close. The Miis look like crap in comparison to the avatars. They don't even have hands or feet for hell's sake. If the 360's avatars looked like Miis I really would have been annoyed with them. As they are though, I think they actually turned out to be quite cool. I have had fun customizing my avatar and seeing my friends' avatars. It makes the whole experience seem much more personalized.

Wii Miis are dreadful. This article is written by an IGN idiot. Mii-60s (Rare Avatars) are far superior already .. and we've yet to see all the likely tweaks & improvements MS will throw at us. \o/

You guys are hilarious...the point of the miis are to be a caricature of who you are, not to look cool, which is obviously what MS is trying to do. You won't get the same laughs when you make a friend with a distinguished nose huge on their mii, or making a tall lanky guy. Miis are meant to be a parody of yourself, which is why it's fun.

I hate the X360 avatars.

Miis look kiddy but they're supposed to look that way and there's nothing bad about it. In fact, they don't look kiddy. Just cartoony. They are supposed to represent a cartoon version of yourself.

X360 avatars, on the other hand, are complete ripoffs. They look REALLY kiddy this time. And it doesn't fit the X360 at all. They try to be too realistic and have those STUPID smiles on their faces. They make me think of this :

22 - customization...?
Between the two I would have to throw the nod to nintendo for customization. I think the 360 avatars are much more natural looking with attached arms and legs but I can't see where I could make a darth vader or robocop character. At least the Mii's let you move and resize the various parts to manipulate them to make such characters.

I have seen some pretty cool Mii's and can only imagine the time involved to do so. I also like the Mii contests that go on. I made one that came in 8th in my region.

Maybe MS should do some avatar contests for live points...?

edit: I would also like to see the creation of more than one avitar for your gamer profile. Some days I just don't feel like myself and would like to pick which persona to be.
