MGS4 has my vote as well, but I can totally understand why people who aren't fans of the series don't like it. It's really an acquired taste, but being as big of a fan as I am, MGS4 was like a religious experience.

I have a feeling GTAIV is gonna pick up a lot of undeserving GOTY awards from various outlets. The media really rode that one hard, unlike many fans.

I give it to MGS4.But take nothing away from the other games.2008 has been a lovely year for gamers(not fan boys).
Gamers like me can enjoy MGS4 then go and enjoy gears2.

MGS4 yes, LBP yes.

Resistance 2 NO. A game with 87% on Metacritic can't be a GOTY contender.

Props to Sony for having two titles in there, that's a real achievement, however the article exaggerates (well, the title "psxtreme" is a give away as of why) by mentioning 3 titles.

Just for the record, they also mentioned it would be the first time something similar happens, which is false. Past year the Xbox 360 had 3 strong contenders for GOTY:

Halo 3
Mass Effect
Bioshock

oh but I wouldn't be TOO disappointed if it was Fallout 3. It's still a respectable game played mostly by hardcore gamers. It absolutely CANNOT be compared to GTA4. In fact, Fallout 3 would be my 3rd choice.

But yeah I'd prefer MGS4.

The top games this year are:

1. LBP
2. GTA4
3. MGS4
4. Fallout 3

This is not my personal opinion it's what I see as far as what games are doing for next-gen. I personally did like GTA4 but I can see why it should be #2.

That's 2 multiplatform games and 2 PS3 exclusives. Quality over Quantity is on PS3. If you want gobs of generic rehash games then go to the other two systems.

Devil May Cry 4 fell short because of Nero. Cant believe they shafted Dante and Vergil after the third installment. Action Game of the Year anyway... or whatever.

I was hesitant, but LBP and R2 both turned out to be not as great as I had hoped (and R2 still has serious network issues; 7 players playing hide-and-seek on 60-player maps does not make a GOTY).

Runner up for GOTY is Dead Speace IMO.

Maybe it won't win from a majority of the sites, but it doesn't mean it won't be some folks GOTY.

I know it's mine. That's for damn sure.

To round out the top 10, I also loved: Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Fallout 3, LittleBigPlanet, and Metal Gear Solid 4, Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds, Disgaea 3, and Braid.

But Resistance 2 takes the cake for me. I'm addicted as hell.

I'd be cool with MGS4 getting GOTY, too. I think Resistance 2 provides me with the greatest sheer joy/fun and definitely the longest amount of gameplay (replayability is sky-high on that game). But in terms of story, presentation, graphics, mechanics, design, music, acting, etc. I'd have to give MGS4 top marks. It just isn't a game I go to very often, like I do with R2. And I didn't get into MGO at all, but R2's online is right up my alley.

spoken like a true person who has NEVER played Resistance 2.

the campaign is awesome (i beat it in 12 hours. VERY satisfying, and that ending? wow).

the co-op mode is addicting as hell. i've already logged another 20 hours or so in the co-op ALONE.

the competitive is also fantastic, and rounds out the package nicely. you can have smaller scale, 2v2, or large scale 30v30. it's completely up to you. and it's all FUN.

Resistance 2 should, in my opinion, get the FPS of the year award, because of it's polish, value, and fun factor.

i'm torn between MGS4 and Little Big Planet for my GOTY.

it almost seems like the GOTY should be broken up into GENRES instead of lumping them all under one banner, because there have been quite a few games that are fantastic, that deserve awards.

Best 3PS GOTY: MGS4 (with Gears 2 being a runner up)
Best new original IP of the year: Little Big Planet (with Valkyria Chronicles being a runner up)
Best RTS GOTY: Valkyria Chronicles
Best SANDBOX GOTY: GTAIV
Best FPS GOTY: Resistance 2 (with
Best Survival Horror GOTY: Dead Space
Best Racer of the year: Wipeout HD (although GT5 Prologue would be a runner up)
Best RPG of the year: Tales of Vesperia (with Fable 2 being a runner up)
Best SEQUEL of the year: this one is clearly for the fanboys, but there have been some fantastic sequels released. the nominees would be MGS4, GTAIV, DMC4, Burnout Paradise, Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, etc, etc.

and so on and so forth, covering the different genres of games.

there were too many awesome games hitting this year across the three consoles (and the handhelds too), to just lump them all under the Game of the Year category. it's a disservice to games that are fantastic and amazing, but maybe it's genre isn't as popular as another (ie, Valkyria Chronicles is AMAZING, but it's a niche RTS game; it will have a hard time competing for GOTY with games like MGS4 and Gears 2. but if it was BEST RTS of the year, it would take that award handily).

but GTA4 doesn't deserve all the hate it's getting. It's likely they were just saving some stuff for the next iteration. The drive-by mechanic alone makes the game good, add gun wars between NPC's and the ability to knock a cellphone out of someone's hand and then throw it at them and they did a pretty good job(It's the little things).

MGS4 for GOTY for sure, until everyone plays my LBP level which has been in development for almost a month and is slated for release Dec.1

I don't hate GTAIV. Its not my favorite GTA though either and its slightly overrated IMO.

What I believe though is its flaws should not slide so that the next will deliver fully. Its almost like the media gave it a free pass due to its pedigree. Honestly it was nuetered we don't want future GTA's to end up like recent Mortal Kombat's, and Need 4 Speed's do we?

I never plays an MGS game before MGS4 and I loved MGS4. The game is a masterpiece.

I was also a HUGE fan of San Adreas and I was a little let down by GTA4.

Gears of War 2 got really good as the game got toward the end, but for me never quite lived up to Gears 1.

All in all from the games I've played this year. MGS4 stands out as the best, and that is by a rather large margin.

I will also put MGS4 at the top spot not only because of the gameplay, but the visuals are drop dead beautiful! It is one thing to say the cut scenes have a lot of detail in them, but when the only way to tell if you are watching a cinematic or playing the game is the HUD dropping into view when you take control of Snake. That is epic.

After Snake, my heart falters as I have yet to play LBP (asking for it for Christmas) and while I have R2 and think it is a great game, to me it is not GOTY great. Gears2 is also a very great game and the developer pushed the engine to new levels, but again, I don't think it is GOTY material.

Good Luck to Snake, the PS3 could use the win with all the bad press it has been getting.

GOTY = MGS4 without a doubt..

the presentation, the graphics, the stealth, the depth, MGO, the consistently amazing soundtrack, the story and yes lol.... the cutscenes (cry about them all you want, they are the most cinematic and epic around)

my hats go off to Media Molecule, Epic and (to a MUCH lesser extent) Rockstar North... but Kojima has pwned all of you combined

GTA's a bit boring now, but you can't deny the production values) and innovators (LBP)
