Eurogamer: Lips Review

SingStar, anyone? Judging by more than 15 million sales and more than 2.2 million song downloads, the answer is yes. Microsoft wants in on the action, just as it does with EyeToy (You're in the Movies) and Buzz (Scene It?), and so it has enlisted respected Japanese music game developer iNiS to create an alternative that matches the Sony game almost word for word and hopefully builds on it.

The result is a karaoke experience fundamentally indivisible from Sony's vision of how it should work - right down to an outright refusal to use the 'k' word anywhere near it. Players of Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band will recognise the formula too; your singing is rated according to pitch and timing rather than exact notes. However, Lips also aims to outdo the competition by celebrating and rewarding vibrato, rather than punishing it as deviation, and although it often denies you points for brief and low starting points, the way you react to sudden changes in a song's pitch is marked with greater sympathy.

lol the name alone is enough to make this game a fail. For all the karaoke fans who only have a 360 its probably still a good game so don't be swayed by reviews

To be fair, the only thing it beats it in is mics. Lips brings wireless as apposed to singstar.

Simply put, this game is not great, but if you want a Karaoke game for your 360 the only option is this really (although Rockband kinda has a Karaoke element).

The name sucks imo, Lips just sounds stupid.

Maybe the reviewer is a bad singer. It must be hard getting the task to review a karaoke game. I rather go to a karaoke bar and hear the awful singing of strangers. Its a nice laugh. Anyway, another sucky game. Next please.

I thought Microsoft would have something more up their sleeve. It's too bad they couldn't pull a Rock Band on Singstar.

3 - It's a Singstar ripoff
Singstar has yet to do jaw-dropping numbers in NA but in Europe every single Singstar full retail game has sold over a Million copies(I'm not talking about the expansion packs here I'm talking about the core games). It's no surprise why Microsoft wants in on the market.

Is Lips going to help them?Maybe, but if more reviews roll in giving the game such low scores, the answer is going to be a sure No.

4 - "I thought Microsoft would have something more up their sleeve. It's too bad they couldn't pull a Rock Band on Singstar. "
I know right,Rock Band was able to cut into Guitar Heroes fame by branding itself as a more mature and slicker way of playing a Guitar videogame, and it worked.

It looks like Microsoft tried the same for Lips and so far,it doesn't look like its going to work

I find it odd that so many reviewers giving out positive scores for this game have left out the many problems.
You have to keep your peripheral (iPod) attatched to play songs from it, kinda takes away the appeal. The mics seem to interpret any sound as singing? ouch, that's a big no no. The online is severely lacking. Singstar thrives because of the community.

Most reviews have said thing like "Lips found everything missing from Singstar and added that to the game" It sounds like that is a load of rubbish to me.

lips - totally crappiest name ever. It cant even beat Wii Music.

Singstore is the best.

im not surprised by the score, 5/10.

Well done Microsoft for revealing the game at that E3 show (or something like that) and it turns out to be a trash

one bad review - so far.. 3 good ones... check metacritic... what that means is that this is actually a fun game. who cares who makes it.

just because sony have a singing game means no one else can?? get real.

are you all so blinded by console rage that u have to find some thing to have a go at.

Lips is a ripoff of singstar
NXE won't be as good as home

10 - "get a grip people. one bad review - so far.. 3 good ones... check metacritic... what that means is that this is actually a fun game. who cares who makes it."
Yeah but only one of the reviews is from a mainstream credible website, and that site is Eurogamer

That is irrelevant. No matter who the web site is, it's still a person reviewing it like any other. The fact that 3 people out of 4 so far like it means exactly that! Does your opinion count less because I don't know who you are...NO. If anyone puts forward information that is well rounded then that opinion is as important as anyone elses....

OT, but, that line is just hilarious: "[...], whereas Microsoft - architect of the Red Rings - has [...]". LOL. Sorry, couldn't resist. That review seriously wasn't written by a MS fanboy.

Maybe to you but to the majority of gamers and all publishers out there,a review from a credible and well known site holds more weight than a review from an unknown website.

You can have 15 reviews from unknown websites praising a game, but if IGN and GameTrailers or Gamespot and 1up or Eurogamer and GameInformer say the game is mediocre then the game will be labeled mediocre, and as a result, sales of the game will be hurt.Too Human anyone?

Whilst I understand your point you are also highlighting the short fall in the belief that the bigger site opions hold higher value to the everyday person. I can see why the corps would perfer for the bigger sites to give better reviews because theyget more its and therefore more exposure - but it doesn't mean they are right.

You could for example have 10 small sites and 2 big ones. 10 could love a game and 2 could hate it. Because of this the game would be a labeled a flop when it is anything but.

Please understand that many just love to flock to any negative review or negative news about MS. It somehow brings joy to their sad days.

Yes, all those flops and the console continues to sell well. This should not matter to you if you don't own a 360.
