Latest Figures Put PSN and Live in a Dead Heat for Subscribers

During his keynote address back at TGS, Microsoft's John Schappert revealed that Live had reached 14 million global subscribers. Not to be outdone for too long, in a post celebrating the PS3's second birthday on the Official PlayStation Blog, Sony says they now match that number with 14 million active accounts on their PlayStation Network.

Aren't microsoft at like 22 million consoles sold or something?

With only 14 million subscribers? What about the other 8 million people?

*cough* Microsoft's inflated *cough* sales numbers *cough*

I'm subscribed to both. I'm a fan of good games no matter what system they're on. It's just that Microsoft or Sony acquired the rights to different games...it shouldn't make a difference on if we like it or not.

Not everyone want's a Gold subscription, I have a silver account and the only difference is I don't get is access to play online with people and demo's come out a week later. I hardly ever play multiplayer games so it's no big deal besides I own a PS3 so whenever I do get the urge it's all good!

Replacement consoles counted in sales will not garnish a new xbox live account.

On the same note, I know Sony users have multiple accounts for different regions.

1.4 - Whether it's a gold or silver membership...
Wouldn't that still be counted as a subscriber?

So, Microsoft's 14 million would include both Gold and Silver memberships, correct?

i have to say that PSN's 14mil might not be all thet accurate. There are 2 things which have to be put into account. One is that some PS3 users actually have more than 1 acct for accessing different region's PS Store. Second thing is that Sony have started PSN account for PSP users as well. So PSN users aint necessary to be PS3 owners. More over you dont need to have a PSP or PS3 in order to sign up an acct too. I can easily make an account for a friend of mine who doesnt own a PS3 too. So I would say there might be 14mil active accounts out there but that doesnt mean anything for PS3.

Regarding Xbox as I have said in the past before, people never take into account of those RRODed 360 which M$ also adds them into the figure as sold hardware. And I also have friends who bought more than 1 360 within this generation because of RROD issue as well. So selling over 20mil units wont exactly mean they will have over 20mil active accts as well. So 14mil from what M$ describe actually does sound about right for this 3 years.

I have said before I dont side either console. There is no point to it since it doesnt benefit me as I own both. But personally for now I actually prefer PS3 more than 360. Thats just personal liking and has nothing to do with general. But even this is the case doesnt mean I would side more towards PS3.

Yep, there are PS3 owners with multiple accounts (I have 3), however that's most likely not that common. It's one thing for a hardcore gamer to need access to multiple PSN stores & content, but your average "Joe Gamer" probably wouldn't bother. Setting up the accounts can be troublesome.

MS can PROVE they have that many on LIVE because you PAY for it. Sony can just make up any number they want, go check Socom or Warhawk and the lack of players on the FREE PSN. How about the WRECK that is MGS4 online? I had my was never online with a PS2,Xbox,360 or PS3 UNTIL I had wi-fi in my house. Most people do NOT have access to internet in their homes yet belive it or not and plenty that do will not let their kids play a game system on line

@earwax - lol you retard there's always hundreds of people playing warhawk, shows what you know. Also whether the service is being paid for or not will not affect the information on how many accounts there are on either PSN or XBL.

I'd expect that 14 million number to be too high for both PSN and XBL, on PSN myself I have 4 accounts (UK, USA, JAP, AU), and on XBL if they are counting Silver accounts as well then it would also be a lower value.

Well xbl is the number for gold + silver and psn is the number of total subscribers. Well, xbl numbers are way more reliable because you have to pay for that; psn numbers aren't because currently i have 3 unique accounts(to access other regions) and other people on psn have multiple accounts for different reasons

Sony said there are 14 million "active" accounts so if you activate an account without having a PlayStation 3 how can it still be "active"? I for one don't have more than one PlayStation Network account so this doesn't apply to me or anyone I know. With the PlayStation Portable you're using your pre-existent PlayStation Network account from you PlayStation 3 on you PlayStation Portable.

I've never heard of Microsoft counting the bad XBOX 360s that was sent to them because of problems. Either way you need to get the facts straight when you own both consoles yourself, lol. What's really disappointing is that PlayStation 3 owners will make more than one account. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, it's like buying both two games with different box art. In the end you're getting the same thing plus your stats will be scattered. Like the goofs who buy more than one console when one PlayStation 3 can connect up to seven controllers. One word, waste.

I have about 12 xbox live accounts. Each time I go to a buddies house I create a new account to take advantage of the free month given to new users. We have a server at work that allows us to make as many fake emails as we want, so I can have a legitimate email within a second. I know quite a few people that take advantage of this. Since even though an xbox live user has a live account their guests do not get the same privileges without having one themselves. Talk about milking your customers. My buddy bought two headsets and can only use one of them since he only owns a single live account. How ridiculous is that? (Unless he has a faulty headset...) All xbox users at work do this very same thing.

I only have 1 PSN account, since I'm not into demos. I doubt many people know about creating accounts in other countries to get around restrictions.

1) inflated sales numbers 2) they charge for the service of playing online

For Sony to have an equal number with a smaller install base is a great achievement, and will only increase the more they release PSN only games etc...

Microsoft also count Silver subs in their numbers.

Fact is, there's numerous people who don't have internet connections but own consoles or don't want to connect online for whatever number of reasons.

If Microsoft wanted to inflate the numbers, being that every purchased 360 is authorized a silver account. They could have said that they have 20+ million XBL subscribers. The fact that they said 14 million leads me to believe that they are speaking of Gold accounts only.

Additionally I don't know what the number for PS3 sells are but, being that PSN is totally free, why don't PSN have more than 14 Million "Registered Accounts". I have a friend that I know for a fact has at least 7 PSN accounts registered, about 4 are in different markets and the others are to add more friends. So if anyone's numbers are inflated I could easily say that it is likely sony's.

I thinks it's incredible that PSN hasn't surpassed XBL in registrations being that it is free and people are using on average 2-3 accounts for the same PS3. Please don't say the 360 has been out longer, because it doesn't take a year for people to sign up for free stuff. That in itself says a lot.

I know you're trying to sound clever, but that's not necessarily true. I have three different US registrations. I uses them so that I can give different people my PSN tag. Only my local friends (people in my living area that has a PS3) get one and the other two are for other people I meet online. One of them I made simply because I thought of a cool PSN tag I wanted to use.

Neither of them has more the 15 friends in them, but I do have 3 registrations.

Also, if you us singstar, you notice that different markets have different songs in them. Some people may create multiple accounts for that.

Free, VERY smart move on SONYs part, this will only grow and grow, I mean out of the box its free, so who wont say screw it let me check it out. On xbox its like 50 dollars? Hmm I dont know if I have the funds or really want to go that route right now. I still think if MS was smart they would go 29.99 and atleast give some new people some breathing room.

Yeah free was pretty smart, I think the subscription fee for LIVE might put a lot of people off, I know I don't like the idea of it.

I was sitting in class last night (I take a couple of night classes) and one of the guys there is a big PC gamer and just recently played Gears 1 on PC and loved it. He asked me had I played Gears 2 yet as he heard it was out recently. I said no but it's been getting pretty amazing reviews so no doubt you'd love that too.

He asked me when it's coming out on PC and I said according to good ol' Cliffy B it wouldn't be, but if he wants to he can pay £130 for a 360 and play it there. He's like does 360 support multiplayer? (the guy loves games but he's clueless about consoles tbh, it's quite an anomaly...big gamer but clueless on anything non PC related) to which I said yes ofc but you need to pay a £40 yearly subsciption or w/e it is for the 3 month one in order to play it online.

Dude pretty much refused on the spot to buy a 360 to even play the SP campaign (he mostly likes the MP part of games and that's the important part to him)

There are possibly a lot of people out there not buying the 360 or missing out on part of the gaming experience because they are put off by the subscription fee.

Just a thought, I just think it's a pity the guy is gonna miss a game he'd obviously love because he doesn't want to pay to play online, which is partly his fault too for being stubborn but can't say I blame him. I don't want to pay to play online either.

they are paying for broadband and an xbox live subscription every year which continues to grow..

on the other hand psn is Freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, there should be no contest,

if playstation gamers are more mature and older you would think they are more apt to be able to afford broadband...and have more stable finances.(yeah thats all BS and hogwash)

some are claiming there should be more subscribers on xbl hence the 22 million user-base, with 14 million paying customers Psn should be a shame for a free service.
