Kotaku: BioShock DLC Adds A Lot But Loses Something Important

Something about the the BioShock "Challenge Room" downloadable content seems wrong. It's not the fact that it's DLC. Kotaku appreciates 2K trying to get more mileage out of the blockbuster to distract people from the fact that they haven't given them BioShock 2 yet. And it's not exactly the fact that the Challenge Room DLC is a PlayStation 3 exclusive –- although that doesn't seem quite fair to Xbox 360 fans that need Achievements as much as PS3 fans need Trophies.

What's really bothering them is the lack of fiction. They are not asking for a new ending or a tacked-on chapter that somehow changes the fantastic story of BioShock – why fix something that isn't broken, right? It's just that what made BioShock special was the story. Oh, sure, the graphics were spiffy, the art style was cool and the game really does play well (not too glitchy or difficult to manage). But BioShock without its story is like a Twinkie without its filling – still somewhat tasty, but hollow and far less satisfying.

1 - so let me get this straight
it not a problem when the xbox 360 get exclusive contents, but it is a problem when the ps3 get it? Kotaku is showing it true color again.

1.1 - kotaku is like
'it loses out on giving 360 owners the better experience.'

And that's why ps3 owners shouldn't buy it.

Someone call me?

I bet if this was a 360 exclusive DLC, they'd be laughing in the face of PS3 fans who don't get to play it.

Kotaku is one of the worst websites/blog's ever created

Cant say I disagree, HipHopGamer is correct in saying Killzone 2 is going to separate the PS3 from the 360. It's DA SH*T.

is the foxnews of the gaming world. So biased and so misleading its funny. I read their site just to get a laugh and see what a biased website looks like. Only Silogon's site gives me a better laugh.

@1.4

Bioshock and KZ2 are only related because they are both FPS. KZ2 may have better graphics and gameplay, but I can 100% guarantee the storyline of Bioshock will make KZ2's "look like a$$." Bioshock has no multiplayer, it is a story-based FPS, and probably the best of it's kind ever made (System Shock 2 is good, but I don't see how people compare it to Bioshock in terms of story-telling, also, Half-Life 1 and 2 have good stories and better gameplay, but again, the story doesn't come close to Bioshock's).

It's no different than comparing any other two very different games - enjoy them for what they are, because a comparison makes no sense. A comparison with KZ2 against CoD4 and Resistance 2 is much more feasible, however. Also, you say you don't care about any other games anymore. Maybe you should change your name then, because you are doing a great disservice to LBP with that statement.

As for Kotaku, they sound like they are whining (which I'm sure they are)..."*cry* it's not fair!!..." Then again, it's not like they've ever done anything to expect more from them.

Kotaku.... just shut up

what's next?

''LBP is bad because it's an exclusive and it encourages hostility between the PS3 and X360 factions''?

I was just going to say the same thing. I never hear anyone on this site complain about the 360 getting exclusive content, all I hear is the the 360 version is the way to go if you want the full game. But now that the PS3 version is getting exclusive content it's not fair.

i was confused at first but then it hit me

kotaku doesnt have any 360 sales to gloat about so it digs into the ps3 again.....

sites like kotaku should be happy N4G exists..

other than being microsofts unpaid representative..

it would have nothing to talk about..

i truly think that if the 360 werent around it wouldnt exist.. i say that beacause they obviously hate..

what a waste of bandwidth it is

The DLC is a year late? It was supposed to be here for the PS3 November 2007? Old game is a weak arguement. PS3 only owners that didn't play it before will now get a chance, so that's good. If I don't see a movie until a year after it's released, is the movie any better or worse? Hendrix still rules, and his music was probably old before you were born. The DLC doesn't need to be integrated into the main story line as much as it needs to be FUN. I've read a lot of Thom's posts and yours, and there is no question in my mind who the dumbass is. Any guesses? Here's a hint: It's not Thom.

I can assure you if this exclusive content was released on 360 they would have re-reviewed it and had given it 15/10.

kotaku = JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As soon as I seen kotaku as the link I knew this was a bunch of cry baby crap.

"Kotaku appreciates 2K trying to get more mileage out of the blockbuster to distract people from the fact that they haven't given them BioShock 2 yet. And it's not exactly the fact that the Challenge Room DLC is a PlayStation 3 exclusive –- although that doesn't seem quite fair to Xbox 360 fans that need Achievements as much as PS3 fans need Trophies. "

and what about GTAIV why doesn't Kotaku write about why 360 fans are still waiting for the first installment of the $50 million wasted by M$ for that DLC. So the PS3 gets something that M$ couldn't buy and Kotaku has a hissy fit over it someone need to change there diaper because you can obviously tell the full of sh*t.

i don't think the story is what make bioshock. it's feeling like a bad@ss when you get lots of weapons and plasmids and gene tonics. getting in a fair fight with a big daddy; or having a bunch of splicers around and setting them on fire or freezing them or filling them full of bullets.......sweet!

but the "dlc"? not for me. only because this content should have been on the retail disc. this is nothing but gouging the consumer and that stinks. i won't be a party to that.

13 - Comon, this is just...
crap. There are some legitimate reasons for why you could hate on the DLC by saying that it should come free since it comes a month after the games release or at least it should be cheaper or some such but.... hating because there is no story? Thats just grasping at straws. Get a grip Kotaku

This is the same Kotaku that originally praised 2K for "being respectful to the original experience" and not adding or changing narrative, right? The point isn't which console you like best here, the point is that even if you share the bias towards all things 360 you're still being sold short by gutter level journalism that contradicts itself while being percieved as having a plain bias and lack of either stylebook or integrity. We ALL deserve way better.

"And it's not EXACTLY the fact that the Challenge Room DLC is a PlayStation 3 exclusive –- although that doesn't seem quite fair to Xbox 360 fans that need Achievements as much as PS3 fans need Trophies."

He used the word "exactly". So, that right there tells you his true reasons for writing this article. "Not exactly", meaning just a little bit.

That's why I hate gaming blogs. They're filled with BS opinions.

Just give me the facts.

19 - Of course Kotaku think PS3 exclusive DLC is wrong - it's not on their beloved Xbox 360
Bioshock was a fantastic game on the Xbox 360.
Bioshock is also fantastic game on the PlayStation 3.
DLC has been released for this modern great. Kotaku slate it. Why?
-Because it hasn't been released on their beloved 360. It is a real shame that a big USA website is run by gamers who are patriotic to a console made in the USA.

Kotaku writers are entitled to love the 360, but they should also try not to spin news against the others consoles. Kotaku should recognise that there is a lot of good on the Wii and PS3.

Did any of you even READ the article at all? All he said was that it was cool, but he felt it pointless to complete because the story that he originally fell in love with has no basis or connection to the DLC and so it's Bioshock that isn't really bioshock. whatever, it's his point, ya'll are whiners.

20.1 - whinging or morally obliged?
It doesn't bother me what Kotaku's bias actually is it's the fact that it's a problem that's as plain as the nose on your face with added double standards and grave discrepancies in the journalism that does. It's duty to point out cack-whatever that cack supports.
