Sony Chases Apple's Magic

Businessweek: "Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer bristles every time he gets the question: Why can't the Japanese electronics giant be more like Apple? The maker of the iPod, iPhone, and Mac computers consistently delivers supercool gadgets that are easy to use, while Sony sells music players, TVs, and cameras that get mixed reviews and often don't even work well with other Sony (SNE) products."

Theres a thing about Apple they are highly uncreative on certain levels..
Iphone-Itouch same thing without a call feature.

A mac without Bootcamp is a childs toy at best.

@socomnick, most people who buy Macs are Emos, The Artistically impaired, Dorm Nerds, basically a fisherprice computer for the educationally challenged.

Only popular because its trendy? Well then how did it become trendy to begin with? By being trendy? LMAO

No, I started buying Apple stuff ten years ago because they make great products. They didn't become cool just out of nowhere. Innovation and cool products can only stay unnoticed for so long , eventually people start catching on. I used to like being the only kid with an iPod at school, but this was the first iPod back in 2001 when I was in HS.

You are paying for the quality and design. Even so, Macs have gotten so much cheaper today that you aren't paying much extra anymore, sometimes even cheaper now for the same specs and features. And if you wanna talk custom, then yes you can get a custom PC to run OSX as well for cheap.

Underpowered? Maybe you've never seen their Pro products, which have become the standard in many industries like Music, graphic design, movie editing, etc. ironically due to power. The real hidden power is actually the OS, which can't be given a spec number. Windows will always be buggy, unstable, cluttered and bloated due to an archaic registry and the other Windows design standards.

I don't understand how you can say having an iPod or Mac is trendy. Macintosh has been around for decades. It's not like they recently popped out of no where and everyone is buying them because it's the popular thing to do.

Apple also set the standard for MP3 player's with iPods and that's why they're the most popular.

@Millah
Well said. I applaud you. I loved being one of the early adopters of the iPod. Being in school showing off the cool new gadget was fun, but I remember the following year the new ones were released and a lot of people had gotten those and my old iPod was no longer garnering me any attention. :(

I know people will disagree with me here, but I'd have to agree with Socomnick. I wouldn't say Apple products under-perform, but they are overpriced. They are also trendy so a lot of people tend to buy the products. And of course name recognition plays a part. I have comparable products and I payed a lot less money. I don't think technology should be a fashion trend as Apple has made it. But that's my own two cents. I have a SanDisk 4GB MP3 player and it works great for me. And my cost was half that of the closest iPod Nano.

I like the way ThatCanadianGuy420 said Sony = Good Quality yet on the paragraph above says:

"Sony sells music players, TVs, and cameras that get mixed reviews and often don't even work well with other Sony (SNE) products."

I use a Mac because I have a better experience with them. Though price does suck, I'm glad I got one. And there are cheaper macs out there you can get that don't cost as much as they use to.

4 - Why can't the Japanese electronics giant (Sony) be more like Apple?
I didn't know that Apple put out movies, music, video games, televisions, dvds, vcrs, blurays, computers, cell phones, and more. Apple must be doing it.

But Stringer's concern isn't that Sony doesn't offer consumers enough choices, it's that there isn't enough demand for any of them to command the 30% profit margins that Apple enjoys.

The first think that these companies need to be on par with Apple is INNOVATION, not improvement. Look at companies like Samsung, HTC and LG trying to creat iphone-wannabe mobile phones. And all that they produce is pure crap with not-so-good UI.

As much as apple innovates, they also release gimped products so they can release a new "better" product the next year, which keeps the money flowing in.

Example #1: Ipod Touch released.

Me: They need actual volume buttons to make this easier to use, or some buttons to make it easier to switch tracks while on the go. Plus it's way too expensive for the space it has.

Friends: What? You're just a hater, the ipod touch is AMAZING, and it'sooo cool.

As I continue to use my sony mp3 player with superb sound quality, included headphones and battery life.

*Next Year* Ipod Touch 2.0 released...(with volume buttons, cheaper price point...AND better battery life (through a software update))

Me: I told you so.

I mean, they couldn't put volume buttons on the original product?
WTTFF

Macbooks...overpriced
Macbook Air...retarded and overpriced
Nano...disgusting but good price now
Ipod Classic...Good product
Ipod Touch 2.0...Good product

Now all they need to do is improve on sound quality...and get rid of itunes.

As I

Agree with you man. And ohh, i recently tried this new Sony mp3 player, sound quality was the BEST i have ever heard. Duno why people are blinded by Apple's average sounding ipods when there are better and cheaper alternatives around. But Apple still gets the credit for inovation.

I do like my Ipod Classic 80GB but Apple are overrpriced, my PC outperforms most Mac's and it was cheaper hell I could put OSX onto it or Linux if I really wanted to. Another thing, the earphones that come with the Ipod suck, they really do and they don't even last that long. Mine broke while I was walking to the train station and yes I do take good care of most stuff I own.
