IGN: Dead Space Review

IGN Writes: Call it science fiction survival horror, but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that's tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump. It may be a newcomer, but the seeds of an incredible franchise have been sown, and EA's in a great position to reap a phenomenal franchise full of scares. If you like survival horror, action or sci-fi, Dead Space needs to be on your radar.

Pretty good score I'd say but after reading the review, it looked as if the score should be a little higher. The reviewer thoroughly enjoyed the experience but was really burned by the difficulty issue. That said I'm appreciate what seems like a honest score by this person. I hate games getting 10's. We all know that no game should ever receive that perfect score. None have ever been perfect but I have played a couple 9.9's.
Regardless, I pre-ordered from BB and will purchase on day 1.

I'm not going to cry conspiracy here, but there may be a little bit of a bias against the game. How did GTA get a PERFECT 10 but this falls short of a 9? I think it's a good score, but it should have been a nine.

WHEN will you all SHUT UP about GTA? IGN really enjoyed GTA, they thought it was a masterpiece and a perfect game, of which I would say it was close to both. SO DID A BILLION OTHER WEBSITES. MAYBE it WAS good... Your opinion differs somewhat and so you NEVER STOP WHINING ABOUT IT. IT WAS A GREAT GAME GET OVER IT.

2.4 - What's the difference?

I have never understood why people see much difference between TPS and FPS.

In a FPS, you walk around and shoot people. In a TPS, you walk around and shoot people while staring at your characters butt the entire game.

2.6 - @ Proxy: Good question.... there are two reasons why some prefer 3rd person to 1st person views...

One.... just plain old preference. Some like it, some don't. Some like how 1st person helps heighten the immersion by putting you "in the game." Other like a 3rd person view that allows them to see more of their surroundings...

Reason Two (and unfortunately my f'd up reason): motion sickness. Since Doom, I love 1st person games - but they don't love me. Unless I'm downing dramamine, after a little while I start to get head-aces, upset stomach, and nausea. Granted, it can happen with 3rd person view games also like the first Twisted Metal, the 1st Katamari game (not the 2nd one though), and even Rachet and Clank: ToFD - but the occurrence is much, much more rare.

It won't stop me from playing if the game is a must play - just pop some meds for Vertigo and let the fun begin. :)

The people you REALLY have to feel sorry for are the epileptics :(

But I don't think that 1st / 3rd person view matter in their case - maybe it's just Pikachu / Speed Racer the movie type flashing lights?

Well now that... that's just stupid. Yeah, they use DRM on their PC games... so unless your buying for PC (which if you are, you can ignore what I'm saying right now) then what you just said is idiotic.

You may be "supporting them" technically but whether or not you, one person, buys the game for Xbox 360 or PS3, isn't going to affect their DRM policies any time soon.

This cements my purchase. Also, it's good to see the difficulty is such that it really makes you afraid for your character's life around every turn. The necromorphs are really a formidable enemy!

EA has its sh!t franchises that it keeps pumping out year after year, but they also show that they can come out with quality games like Dead Space, Burnout and (hopefully) Mirror's Edge.

26 - Good, so far reviews have been great for this game, although....

I did find it funny how they said that no quick turn-around is a wise decision to heighten the tension while this same feature was mercilessly attacked in Alone in the Dark. Some times I don't get these reviewers. But all in all, if this strategic dismemberment isn't too much of an issue, I might buy the game, cause I suck at shooters but do like horror.

If you took the time to read the extended review, the PS3 version wins in one more category than the 360 version.

"Presentation
Like most of the other categories in this Head-To-Head, there are no real differences in presentation between the 360 and PS3 versions of Dead Space. The menus present identically in both versions, which isn't surprising given the straight-forward feature list. The PS3 version of the game doesn't require an install, so you'll be able to start playing as soon as you put the disc in. There aren't really any cutscenes or cinematics as all the story sequences unfold in-game from the player's point of view. This is identical in both versions of the game.

Dead Space does have some frustrating load times. If you die and have to restart you'll be greeted with a painfully long loading screen that only adds to your frustration at having died. The PS3 version loads in a little more quickly from previous save files, but otherwise the load times are pretty similar. Dead Space has done something interesting with in-game menus for item management. All in-game menus appear as holograms in front of Isaac rather than pulling players into a static pause menu. Likewise, you'll be alerted to collectible items in the environment with a blue hologram. This functions identically in both versions of the game. While the games are ninety-nine percent identical in this category, the PS3's slightly faster load times when booting a save file are enough to give it a small victory here.

'overpriced junk'?...fair enough...that is an opinion based entirely on your own buying habbits...'its should have never released and they have have just stuck with the PS2'...that on the other hand is just garbage...

so the PS3 and 360 ended up being very similar in terms of performance...that seems to be what everyone else takes as true...while I have never seen a 360 game with the visual prowess of MGS4 or Uncharted (let alone Killzone 2)...360 fanboys constantly tell me how multiplats are 'always' better on the 360, and that the PS3 has nothing better looking than Gears...whatever...doesn't matter to me either way...

there is one area though that the PS3 absolutely annihilates the 360...overall quality...the 360 can get better versions of average games (after all, the 360 has not ONCE had a superior version of an excellent game...Bioshock may look a little better on the 360, but each review pointed to the added content as more than enough to equal them out...everything else is identical, or better on the PS3)...its irrelevant when the thing may as well have been packed with a live grenade...

it has nothing to do with being 'rich'...I am by no means rich...but I also only buy 'expensive' products that hold up to a standard that I feel the money is worth...

the 360 fails that standard by a huge margin...the PS3 exceeds it entirely...

I won't ghetto up my home theatre with a loud ass 360 that no matter what is on the verge of popping...and no one can tell me otherwise...as the price falls for the 360, it becomes more of a realistic investment for me...but when i bought the PS3, games aside, the only 360 with the features I wanted was the Elite, which was at the time nearly $500...while a 60gb PS3 with more features, was $600...it was a no brainer...built in HD player, free online, and an excellent game forcast that SCE is simply unmatched at...

there has not been one multiplatform title that caught my interest that was hands down better on the 360...its always "the 360 has better textures as times, and the PS3 has better lighting"...or something along those lines...the 360 trashes the PS3 at crap games like Juiced 2 or frigging Conflict: Denied Ops...great...you 360 owners could have them exclusive for all I care...

but any time I see my 14 year old cousin go through 3 360's in 6 months time...its not something I am going to pay more than $100 for...and that is not including the obscenely fecked up pricing system they have on peripherals for the system...HDD's are overpriced...wireless is overpriced...XBL is overpriced...and the quality of the system in general is complete trash...end_factsheet.exe
