Companies deny things one week then released 'said' things the next. But I doubt the 360 will get a BD drive.

Lanoire... you clearly know nothing of BUSINESS. Did you know SONY Vaio Laptops come loaded with MICROSOFT Windows Vista? The two companies have worked in tandem for a long time, they just take pot shots at one another within their gaming divisions.

If BD continues to take off and Digital Downloads continue to horribly lag, expect to see BD on an MS console, as a "choice" as so many love to put it.

Aw, looks like I hit a nerve. It's just a freaking storage format, one that many movie enthusiasts enjoy. Stop acting so butthurt and grow up. IF it continues to do well, MS would be silly not to offer it as an OPTION.

1.6 - Yup, business it is
If you think Microsoft is going to use DVD in there next Xbox then you really live under a rock. Blu-ray will be in the next Xbox. It wouldn't make any sense for them not to have it in the next Xbox.

They can choose a proprietary format for the next Xbox as well so I wouldn't rely on the Xbox 3/Blu Ray has a safety net, is Microsoft apart of the BDA?

1.8 - MS doesn't need BLU RAY for the 360
@ OnslaughtX – I have to ask you do you know anything about business. It’s not surprise Microsoft wants BLU RAY to fail and for good reason. It’s not in their company’s interest to promote it.
BLU RAY uses Java for as the standard platform for its disc. If you know anything about MS and its other products MS has been kicking Java’s but in development with its .NET platform. So if BLU-RAY takes hold it gives Java a much needed boost to the language.
Next the extra hoopla of copy protection that goes into BLU RAY disc was seen as a hassle for MS. Not to say its small disc size does not adequately serve the PC market.

Let’s not forget video on-demand service that Microsoft is trying to get a huge part in.

No look at all the BLU-RAY manufactures at the moment none are netting a profit for BLU-RAY players because most consumers aren’t on board. They had to liquidate and cut the price just to have a chance at staying something consumers want to pickup and not forget. Example Samsungs director saying he doesn’t see it being around longer than 5yrs.

So tell us why would MS want to add BLU-RAY to its console. The 360 is doing fine without it… Latest figures if I’m not mistaken show a boost in sales worldwide and they still don’t have BLURAY.

If true it's the right thing to do.They should just save Blue-Ray for the next console.

They are probably making truck fulls of money with the Video Store and the Netflix release will only add to it which is why I am skeptical Blu Ray will ever grace the Xbox 360, and possibly the Xbox 3 as well!

There are other reasons for no BR Drive for the 360. With Sony, we don't know if BR success is more important to them than PS3 success. But with MS it is easy to say that OS and peripheral software ventures are more important than the 360. With that said, the rest is explained here:

I highly doubt they will ever release blu-ray for 360, or even for the next xbox.

MS is much for focused on downloadable movies, games, etc than supporting blu-ray, which they suspect won't be along much longer anyway.

I personally feel that blu-ray will be obsolete in 2-3 years and downloading HD movies through netflix and other services will be standard.

Also, i'm gonna make a call here and say that the next generation xbox will be DISC FREE for next gaming and movies. It might have a DVD drive for backward compatibility, but what else would they use? they can't stick with DVD, not enough space, they don't have any other disc technology up their sleeves to use. remember that i called this, i am willing to bet a lot of money that it will be DISC FREE, all games, even retail $60 games will be downloadable.

sucks for gamestop.

Well like most Sony boys on this site you can see into the future and read alternate dimensions so you tell me? Would my comment been different oh mind reader?

I've never cared for BR and I never cared or purchased HDDVD. The only thing nice about BR is it would be one less feature the PS3 has over the 360, beyond that yup could give 2 turds. =)

THE TRUTH - 447 days 5 hours ago
10 - Well
I really don't see a need for MS to add-on anything much less a bluRay drive at this point. What are they to gain? Not much really, if it's not standard in all there consoles then it will not benifit the 360 at all. If you want a BluRay drive in tandem with your console purchase a PS3.

These rumors aren't really even news, could we put this to rest already............

/sigh TGS so far has been very dissapointing from all sides

10.1 - Hey The Truth
I agree with you, that MS does not need to add on anything, and if MS comes out with a BR add on drive sales would be OK I guess. How many HD drives did they actually sell? But if MS was to come out with a new SKU and have an Xbox with BR internal, then sales would be huge. It would be a compelling reason to re-buy. Most people would get another 360...

Microsoft stock were as low as 22.07 today.
"How does microsoft benefit from selling blu-ray drives?":it will mean that gamers can get the Xbox 360 with a Blu-ray movie player for notably less than the PlayStation 3. Microsoft has to support Blu-ray in order to leave Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. without an advantage of offering BD support exclusively with the PS3 on the market of video game consoles.

A digital movie would not be 50GB's any time soon, I hear in places outside of North America the internet speeds are actually good! If games are going to be digital then I believe a Steam type system would be implemented where you get the core files compressed and ready to go.

14 - I've been enjoying DVD9 games on the Xbox 360 since Gearsof War came out......
Now what about BD-Drive?

I got 6 BD movies with the PS3 and have never touched one at the stores.

My Laptop has a BD drive and my PS3, but I just wanna play games..

“As we’ve said before, Microsoft has no plans to introduce an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on. Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available.”

So what was up with that whole HD-DVD add on thing? :P

LoydX-mas - 446 days 23 hours ago
15.1 - For starters...
MS had a vested interest in HD-DVD surviving because it used HDI (developed by MS) for the interactive features on HD-DVDs.

Secondly, from what I have read in the past, MS was considering delaying the 360 to have HD-DVD drives internally installed.

16 - Too late for this gen...
What will be most logical if tehy release a PC add-on drive, that "just happens" to be XB360 compatable. That way they can still pooh pooh the BR add on, while still offering it. But that is unlikely.

So they will most likely release it in the next XBox - and only anounce the BR drive a month before the release - to minimize the damage to XB360 reputation...

17 - Sony won't let 360 get Blu Ray
at least for the next couple of years...unless they really want to bury the PS3. Blu Ray is the main feature that attract costumers as of now. If they give Xbox a Blu-ray...why would people want a PS3 then?? unless they are reeeaaallllyyy into the sony exclusives.

18 - blu ray speculations
Microsoft can deny all aspects of a blu ray drive for the 360 and be perfectly right about that decision. But there is nothing saying it is not possible for a third party manufacture to make a blu ray drive for the 360 to help with the encouragement of the sale of 360's as not just a game console but an all around entertainment console as the PS3 has been marketed as so far. With Microsoft stating that "Microsoft has no plans to introduce an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on" is just saying that Microsoft as a manufacturer will not be using BD in the 360 but can later on using such proprietary technology on a future incarnation of their console.

no "Add on"...wonder if that leaves the door open for internal.
MS has been wrong about HDDVD and BR..They should just offer an internal and get over with it..
It would be a really nice feature on their high end boxes

20 - Maybe next gen......
Some devs have already stated that putting games on the 360 this gen is a hardship - but can still be done.

Next gen MS will need a bigger storage format and because a feasibilbly fast Digital Download infrastructure still wont be ready for 7+ years i think that they would go with blu-ray on the xbox3.

By then Blu-ray will be cheap to manufacture and sticking it inside a console wont cost them the earth like it is Sony this gen.

They can do that or go proprietary as well (which would also have its benefits) Nintendo has proven this generation that even without "primitive" media playback a console can still be very successful.
