One last Martini to GoldenEye

During this summer's Xbox Holiday Showcase in New York, product manager Michael Johnson got camera shy when MundoRare asked him about GoldenEye XBLA. However, other people around the same party were more eager to share their thoughts. "Let me tell you what happened," said a Microsoft representative who chose to remain unidentified. What he was about to describe was pretty much the same story we all know. Rare started working on GoldenEye XBLA before anybody knew if it was legally possible to release the game; they completed it; Activision, the current holders of the James Bond licence, greenlighted it; and then Nintendo, who share the rights of the original game with Microsoft, refused to give their approval for a joint launch on Wii and Xbox 360. "But the game is finished and it could be released if the situation changes in the future," MundoRare's source added. In other words, Microsoft is still willing to release GoldenEye even if it takes a decade for Nintendo to eat up their ego.

This is a version of the story that even the third party involved backs up. "It's not up to us, we want to see that game out there," another source from Activision told MundoRare, "you've seen it, it looks amazing and we would love to play it. It was Nintendo's fault." In fact, the people at Activision should be the first in line fighting for GoldenEye. "You know, they have nothing to lose. It's only good for them to get it released," this Microsoft contact said, "they would make a lot of money they are not making the way things are right now."

not even sure what the nintendo motive is for this one, if it was released on wii as well they would make a killing, but i think it is clear these days nintendo only cares about selling hardware...not games

That could be quite true. It's known fact that Nintendo makes a profit on every DS and Wii sold right now (and with the Wii being basically a GameCube with a little bit more oomph to it, you can get bet Nintendo is pocketing at least over 100USD profit on every console sold, if not more), they could probably care less how many games are sold as long as lots of hardware gets moved. Even looking at the first party games that have been coming out as of late, you can tell not a lot of real strong effort has been placed into them compared with other generations. I'm not saying every game is bad or anything, some are really good and all, but it's not like back in the days of the N64 or even the GameCube, the love is gone now.

Might as well release on the PS3 also. That would be even more revenue.

1.3 - This game has a zero percent chance of going to the ps3.
Rare = MS
Goldeneye = Nintendo

This sucks for FPS fans.
I would hate nintendo forever...but they still make Zelda games...
Lets hope for a Perfect Dark remake. Done the same way.

1.4 - It's because nintendo
doen't want to pay to port the code, and to do motion controls. They want microsoft to pay for it, even though rare designed the updated game so that it would look similar on both systems.

The game was allready done (or clsoe to it), by the looks of things Microsoft and Rare were more than willing to take up all the development costs.

but nintendo would need to port it for the wii, and do motion controls for the game.

1.7 - xi that is a good point...
But if Nintendo spends money on doing that for old ports that barely sell on the VC, why would they not want to spend some money just to get a game that sold 8 million copies on the N64 and is still by many the greatest console FPS ever made working on the Wii?

Also, who's to say that rare wouldn't have worked on getting the game working on the Wii?

Actually Nintendo is only making $40 profit on every system.Hardware isnt usually where a company expects massive profit though that is in the software.
I honestly think there is something else going on behind closed doors........like maybe Nintendo is hoping by not releasing Goldeneye they can get more games on vc like Killer Instinct and Battletoads
You notice Banjo got released on the xbox with all the Nintendo logos removed....im thinking we will see soemthing along those lines with several old n64 rare games and in return MS gives the ok for Nintendo to release vc games made by Rare.
Something is up behind closed doors unfortunately i think only a select few people know about it.

1.9 - Actually Product ...
Battletoads and Killer Instinct are Rare owned IP's aswell as Conker and Perfect Dark.

Nintendo would need to compromise for those games aswell.

@ BS Police
Thats what i was saying Viva Pinata was released on the ds which has no connection with Nintendo. How come that game can come out but others cant........i think its all negotiation and there are prolly happening behind close doors since we just saw Banjo get released on the xbox arcade with Nintendo references takin out(except the gameboy image)

also Nintendo didnt lose interest in Rare 6 people quit Rare to form Eighth Wonder while two more people left to form Free Radical and Zoonami. After that the Stamper Bros sold their 51% to microsoft.
Why would Nintendo want to own less then Microsoft since they bought the 51 share?Microsoft would always have their way.

Goldeneye for the Wii would be super sweet. If both versions had online multiplayer it would be a good boost for all parties. I don't see why anyone would want to keep this tied down.

I'd have to plug my Wii up for this release.

1.12 - before you even attempt to d**n Nintendo for holding out, lemme ask just one thing...
... When was the last time Mocrosoft actually did anything to HELP Sony OR Nintendo?

Think about that before you open your mouths...

I'm sure both Nintendo and Sony have buildings stuffed full of Windows machines that I'm sure are heavily discounted.

Just because companies compete in one market doesn't mean they don't work together in another. In this case, companies want to make money. If the game is already made and the only thing holding it back is licensing and Nintendo is the keymaster.

The game is a potential money maker. You know as well as I that Nintendo AND Microsoft would benefit greatly.

The thing is its a game. Games are released on multiple systems all the time. Nintendo should wake up and take advantage of this because there may be a lot more multiplatforms like this that could become available to Nintendo that weren't available before.

I just want to see the game released.

Enigma_2099 - 448 days 8 hours ago
1.14 - And I'm very sure...
... the only reason the buildings are full of those Windows PCs is because they had to be PAID for, not because they were donated.

And that being th case, you're not gonna sit there and tell me that Nintendo is OBLIGATED to let them have this game because of that.

"The game is a potential money maker. You know as well as I that Nintendo AND Microsoft would benefit greatly."

I bet it would, I'm not gonna argue this fact, but consideing Microsoft's busines practices as of late, what with the buying of companies for exclusives, like RARE, doesn't seem like they're THAT concerned about helping Nintendo make mutual profits, now does it?

"The thing is its a game. Games are released on multiple systems all the time. Nintendo should wake up and take advantage of this because there may be a lot more multiplatforms like this that could become available to Nintendo that weren't available before."

Says the guy who's playing a F*CKTON OF MICROSOFT EXCLUSIVES THAT THEY'VE PAID FOR ALREADY, INCLUDING EXCLUSIVE DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT.
Nice try, but this part of your argument FAILS.

"I just want to see the game released."

Nothing wrong with that, but as far as having it on XBox Live, but unless something unforseen happens, all I'll say is... "How's it feel to want?"

It's a shame to see all that effort put into this remake but put in the Microsoft vault because of Nintendo. Just look at those screenshots and you can tell that Rare did a great job remaking the game. Maybe not to the highest of modern standards like you would see on a full, 50-70 dollar retail release, but for an XBLA (and Wiishop or whatever it's called) release that is pretty damn good. Damn good. Both parties would make a ton of money, Oh well, if it happens it happens, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it.

I wish the remake would come to the Wii shop. With Wii controls that is. It really doesn't bother me if it goes to both XBox and Wii. Everyone should experience this game.

I was just playing this game earlier today, and it's still fun. This is the only game that my sister, my brother and I will play together. However the controls did seem a little dated, but that game is a classic.

I really don't know why Nintendo won't do it; they would make a killing.

you guys are talking about the remake adding all these new features if your doing all that you might as well make a new game that looks like golden eye i mean if your changing it so much it isn't really the same game that's how i see it at least?

anyways its stupid because microsoft started working and making the game before even asking for permission shouldn't they have asked first that way they wouldn't have let the work go to waste

8 - I think its a no brainer
If a game was on a previous Nintendo console it should come to the virtual console, rare was owned during 1998 by Nintendo and that's when the game was made. I don't see rare/M$ b!tching about Donkey Kong Country going to the VC

@BS- I understand that, but when the game was made (GE) Nintendo owned everything necessary to have the game on vc. Its only complicated because so many companies want a piece of the pie.

8.1 - Thats not the point.
The diffirence between Donkey Kong and Goldeneye is that Nintendo owns the Donkey King character, they don't own James Bond as a character.

Also, Nintendo never owned Nintendo, Microsoft just bought out Nintendo's shares in Rare when Nintendo was losing their intirest in Rare.

"Nintendo never owned Nintendo"

That's a pretty Zen typo, right there.

Anyway, I'm wondering about exactly what's going through the Nintendo's people's minds, since the way the article makes it sounds, they pretty much turned down free money.

Obviously that's not the case, but it would still be nice to know what precisely the case was.

Looks good ^^^

http://goldeneyesource.com/ <- Is fun too.

Edit: The first is not even out yet how could you possibly know...The second is a mighty fun Total Conversion Half-life/Goldeneye007 Mod. Which I had plenty of fun with.

Its true ain't nothing like the real thing though I know. Goldeneye and Mariokart 64 brought good times with the 4 player split screen back in the day.

11.1 - I disagree.
This would be the ultimate version of Goldeneye with newer graphics (or original graphics if you prefer the older look), better framerate, and of course online multiplayer (Splitscreen included if you don't wanna play online).

I fail to see how this could ruin your memories.

Have any of you come to think that Nintendo simply does not want one of the best games ever (IMO) to be on any other console?

Either that or they want money for it.

I find it arrogant of MS to develop the game before finalizing the legal details tho... lol

nothing beats your original memories...i remember 8 people in my house and we would have goldeneye tournies because at that time that was the best fps....in todays day and age since that game became the standard...games have come along way...saying it would be the ulitmate goldeneye version would be true but in this day and age even the ultimate goldeneye would be an average fps compared to modern day fare.People would play the game for nostalgia purposes
Nothing will beat my memories of goldeneye when it was the peak of the n64 days.
8 people in the same room is better then 32 people online imo.Nothing beats you humiliating your friend while both of you are on the same couch with friends waiting to play.
