Sega to launch PSP beater in 2009

Sega will next year launch a portable media player boasting enough functionality to threaten Sony's PlayStation Portable, the Register Hardware can exclusively reveal.

The PMP is to be called the Sega Vision and it'll work as a videogames machine, in addition to playing films. The unit will feature an integrated camera for capturing still images and video. A built-in TV tuner will provide yet another form of entertainment.

i'm going for fake... TV Tuner? aren't all TV digital now... or at least in the major countries. As big as a credit card? thats not only uncomfortable but stupid. Nice 1'' x 1'' inch screen for gaming.

Sega... Please don't cause yourself further harm! Your franchises have suffered over the years, and you haven't had a noteworthy release in years. If sega were to launch such an item, it would surely fail in the face of competition from DS and PSP! The smart thing would have been to release something like this a couple years after the Dreamcast failed.

Sega needs to first focus on getting their titles back to a respectable level. And then they might have a chance. I can't remember if any sega games have sold over 1 million units within the last few years or not, that's how far off the radar their games are!

4 - Seems very fake to me

Several things seem rather dubious about this new piece of hardware.

1 - Why would Sega choose to release the first news about a new piece of hardware on a random tech site, when the Tokyo Game show is in just a few weeks? (According to the source Sega contacted them with the news).

2 - Apparently the device is supposed to be about the same size as a credit card face on. Take out a credit card and then try to imagine a screen and buttons on it. I'd say it would be far too small for anyone to watch TV or a video from it.

3 - Apparently it is being made by Sega Prize Europe. Sega Prize Europe is a relatively small division of the Sega Europe branch, who's main focus is to make/supply prizes for arcade games such as UFO Grabber.
I think it would be VERY unlikely for something like this to be made by such a small division, who don't normally manufacture items like this.

4 - The source has a photo of the device supposedly in a UFO Catcher cabinet - yet the image is taken far too far away for anyone to see it. Plus it actually says "Nintendo DS" at the top of the cabinet (which suggests the prize is more likely to be a DS to me).

BUT if this does turn out to be true, I will happily eat my words. It just seems like there are too many issues with this story.

Considering that you can't use it in the EU cause they switched to digital already this seems like a stillbirth to me.

And considering that it only manages java minigames (snakes, tetris) this is not a beater of anything, least of all of the psp.

Although I would love to see sega make a comeback (hey, I still have my dreamcast hooked up and play regularly!), I just can't see this happening. They don't have any exclusives anymore... it doesnt impress me and its codec range is lacking. its going to have to get divx cert or go open source to compete. The button layout it terrible for gaming if they have any intentions of that. but i hope it comes out. It has some features that if popular enough sony has to look into beefing up the psp firmware. competition has its advantages.

I really doubt this.I would like nothing more than for Sega to come back and kick the asses of Nintendo and Sony in the portable business.But this device is not focused on games,does not have a dual analog stick,doesn't have a unique feature like the DS stylus and looks fugly.Besides SEGA has lost that talent in making unique and brilliant games like they used to so I don't think the SEGA Vision is the future of SEGA in any way
