I don't think so... I've read somewhere that you can use the old interface if you like with gamerpics and stuff. You don't need to use this new one. But I may be wrong... Microsoft may want as many avatars as possible so it's mandatory to have one?

Well, it's something to definitely being looking forward to. I like the blades look too Colbert.

But I'm happy to see them coming up with something new. And it's going to be pretty rockin! I'd like to see how themes work with it, actually I think they'll look better than before. With the Blades everything lays on top of your wallpapers, so it looks kind of jumbled. I like how it looks right now, but I'm switching once this update becomes available.

The nicest thing will be the HDD installs. I'm going to clean out all of my demos and make room for at least one game. And that's going to be Mass Effect. That game was so epic...I'm definitely loading that one up first before any others.

What I want to see in the future is better Media Center Extender stability. I dunno if it's my router or my wi-fi but Media Center can be a b*tch to navigate when it starts browsing your system and tasking your PC with making thumbnails for all of your media. And when it starts lagging your remote doesn't seem to respond to any input until like a minute later.

Hopefully Microsoft can fix that, seeing that it's a critical part of the living room. The ability of the x360 to be used as an MCE is an incredible plus.

When you add the Extender, it asks if you'd like to optimize network settings.

Remove the extender (from Windows Media Center on your PC) then re-add it, this time, permit the optimization.

I've never seen Windows Media Center (or an Xbox 360 extender) operate anything but butter smooth.

It *is* your local implementation. Are you running wireless? Wireless neworks have lag too -- try it wired (and/or move up from a AB router to a G or N).

I'm not bashing the program (far from it). Here's my setup:

SATA to/from notebook (Fujitsu 5400rpm 8mb cache SATA 150)
Wi-fi to/from notebook (Intel 4965AGN)
Wi-fi to/from router (Belkin N Router)
Ethernet to/from x360 (100BaseT)

Fujitsu 5400rpm >>SATA>> Intel 4965AGN >>wi-fi>> Belkin N Router >>ethernet>> Xbox 360

My wi-fi card and my router are fully 802.11n (draft n) compatible and when I check the task manager its graph shows a maximum connection speed of 144mbps. When I run the network wizard on the x360, it gets all the way up to the top bar. And my notebook HDD scores about 80-100MB/s burst 38-45MB/s average in HDTach/SANDRA

If I went wired, that would defeat the purpose of being "mobile" on my notebook. So, maybe I should just build/buy a separate dedicated media center PC.

They way I'd like to see it work, each new season of clothes should be free... And maybe then release additional/special/etc clothes for those who want a little more or weren't happy with what that seasons clothes brought out... What does everyone else think?

Yah, or like the way some games, earning achievements sometimes unlocks a picture for your profile. More games should start doind that, only give away some avatar items :P So if you see someone with that item of clothing etc, you'll know they got that rock hard achievement youve been spending days on :P Like the gamer picture you get for finishing gears on insane! :P

...looking interface and a welcome update from the current blades - albeit they both achieve the same end result. The only thing I'm not so sure of is the Wii looking avatars which seem to fit better with casual and young gamers.

The only thing I really object to is that fact that you are forced to change. Ok, its an improvement (as a eluded to before) but for those who don't like it its basically too bad. I always prefer to have options.

You know what's great? Microsoft has really done quite a lot with their other services. Here's a rundown of Microsoft services that I use the most and how they rate.

Zune Player: 10/10 Superb. The pinnacle of media library/marketplace functionality. It looks svelt and sleek and the Mix View really adds depth to the experience. I recall a similar feature in Sony SonicStage (a sort of Metroid-esque scrolling tree branch/molecule thing). Mix view lets you see artists and albums similar to what you're listening to, as well as listeners who match your tastes. Zune and XBL share your Windows Live ID as well as your MS points.

Media Center: 9/10 Great. The best way to turn your PC into a media powerhouse. Other alternatives offer nearly the same experience, but nothing beats what you already get packaged with Vista (in its Premium versions). I do like HP's QuickPlay, since it has the nice ability to build a playlist of video music and pictures and plays it all together (music overlaying pictures/music dubbing over video). I have both, so I'm cool like that.

Windows Live: 9/10 Great. Messenger is pretty well built and offers quite a bit of communications options. Other alternatives that are more voice/call dedicated such as Skype might offer more in those areas. Photo Gallery has some quirks but does a decent job of easily maintaining what's in your Public folders, as well as your own Pictures. Live Writer makes it easy to post blogs to your Live Spaces page.

Xbox Live: 9/10 Great. Provides superb access to the Marketplace for demos movies music videos and themes. It is also one of the premiere social networking services in the video games industry, servicing the entire Xbox community. If you have Silver you still have one of the most socially oriented services around, minus the online multiplayer. I'll give it that extra notch once this new update rolls out.

The NXE looks very good. The new NXE *features* (primetime, avatars, new friends features) are *very* good.

If you want the Blades, it will be fully integrated into The Guide.

The only people flamming here *are* being ridiculous. There is no way to deny it, the NXE is another great leap forward for the Xbox 360.

Home = Vaporware, huh? That's why it's in Beta form and will be released as a public beta in a couple months. Home is available in a wholly realized, tangible form that is currently being (real-time) tested by real PSN members as we speak.
