Gears of War 2 not coming to PC

In an IGN interview with Cliff Bleszinski, it was revealed by Cliff that Gears of War 2 would not be coming to the PC. The point of interest came up in a question about Gears 2's "Linked Achievements" and the Achievement portability with an account from Games for Windows Live.
When prompted about a PC version of Gears 2, Cliff spilled the beans: "Gears of War is a great franchise first and foremost for Xbox 360, and therefore we're focusing on that platform for Gears of War 2. We've decided we're not going to do a PC version this time around."

Exactly, in this day and age you can't trust them when it comes to claims like these.

Still I'll pick it up for the 360 and if a year later it surfaces on the PC and I enjoyed it enough first time round I'll pick up for both. Thats what happened with Gears 1.

They have to say it isnt comming out for PC at this point. If they did it might hurt sales a little bit, because some people would wait for the PC version instead of the X360.

Games are developed on PC, and then (I wouldn't say ported) fitted to the console. Especially in the 360's case. When they're ready for some easy money next year they'll make a few small adjustments and release the game on PC. When something is so easy, and has the potential to be profitable, why wouldn't they?

Really. This wouldn't be so strange. Actually this could be a strategy thought out by Microsoft. Just check this:

1. Epic already announced that the Unreal Engine 4 will only be on consoles because of bad sales on the PC.
2. UT3 sold shiat on the PC compared to the console sales. Pirates are mainly on the PC
3. Gears of War played better on the 360, it sold somewhere around 6 mln copies on the 360. On the PC it sold how many exactly?
4. Microsofts strategy: get PC gamers hyped about Gears of War 1, the group that normally wouldn't buy a console also. They're hooked on the game, want to play Gears of War 2. Oooopppssss only on 360, now they will buy a 360 and Gears 2.

They get extra sales on hardware and software.

Also an answer to your question: Microsoft could have negotiated that in the deal for the 360. So even if Epic would want it (read above why they won't), Microsoft could have written this out as a strategy

lol, PC gamers with a $2,000 to $5,000+ rushing out to pick up a half arsed 360 that breaks down when ever the going gets too hot.

I never played gears of war but I've tried some of the pure 360 games ported to the PC and they are pretty crap ports, poor GFX, slow running games/programs then very limited in how it works compared to a pure PC game.

Do you really buy this? This is Epic here, we are talking about, Do you know how much they made from just the Games for Windows agreements alone? Gears of War pc may not have been that much of a commercial success but it was a goldmine for Epic, It cost them barely nothing to port as the game was already done far before the 360 version, Even the Brumak levels were partially done but didn't make the final cut, The E3 demo back in 2005 was running on a Windows XP machine, not a 360, the pc version was practically done back in 2006, it just needed few finishing touches which cost them table scraps,

So in the end, even with the sh1t sales, the game still broke even, that's why it was such a buggy port with crappy support, barely any patching but it's still riddled with all kinds of bugs, they knew the game was going to sell like crap since everybody else had already played it on the 360 so they didn't invest any effort into it, It was just a feeble attempt to show pc gamers they still care since it was the pc gamers that put them where they are today

Truth is you should read between the lines, 360 owners got royally pissed off that gears went to pc with extra content, the outrage on the epic forums alone was huge, Are you really that naive to think that even if a pc version was in the works, that Cliffy B would be stupid enough so as to even hint it in the slightest sense? They're trying to maximize sales for the 360 version, they did the same with first one, They said Gears wasn't coming to pc to get pc gamers to buy 360s, And they want more pc gamers to buy 360s so why would they slash off one less reason not to? You shouldn't ever think that Epic would be that stupid, Them confirming a pc version now would be like them telling 360 owners "Screw you a second time around, we're giving you an inferior version so you guys can spend your hard earned cash to buy in it in sh1tloads, then we make tons of cash and make a superior version for pc gamers with extra content you won't get, most of whom who are gonna pirate the crap out of it"

The last time around, They said there were no plans of any pc version, They know people aren't going to buy that message now, So they have to be more concrete, Make amends with the pissed off 360 owners that had gaming pcs but bought the 360 for Gears, They need to stay on the good side of all these gamers plus future potential 360 owners looking for one more reason to own one, They need those sales so why would they ruin it by either confirming a pc version or leaving the notion of it up in the air, Better to kill it now and ressurect it after the success of the 360 version, People would rather wait if it's a possibility and they don't want people waiting, they want them buying

Maybe for real, they aren't making a pc version but you can't take their word, Either way, this is the best thing they can say for their reputation to help sales reception of the second one, We don't know if a pc version might come or not, This response however is expected even if they are still making a pc version, It's better for them to say no pc version now and have as many 360 sales, then afterwards say "We changed our minds", than to state a pc version now and kill the 360 sales as everyone would be waiting for the pc version instead, Get the point?

This was in 2006, @ darkequitus, they haven't changed their tone, Back then too, they didn't want people thinking it was coming to pc even though file and code leaks showed this, they needed more 360 sales, "So, the overall conclusion of Mark Rein's forum posts is that we WON'T see a PC version of Gears of War. Too bad I say, and I am certain that most PC gamers agree with me." There was nothing there about no plans or plans changing, They said what they wanted to get more sales, that's why most 360 owners were pissed at the forums, because they had gaming pcs and were suckered into getting a 360 just for Gears, Epic had them convinced that Gears was staying 100% 360 exclusive even in the midst of constant battering and questioning about a pc version

I never even said it's 100% coming to pc, My point is take this news with a bucket of salt, Maybe really it will never come to pc, But don't get your panties in a bunch, that's my point, The fact is even if Gears 2 was being developed also for pc as we speak, they would have still said the same thing to save face with angry 360 gamers and maximize sales for the 360 version, They are already hailing it as the biggest game this fall, Why would they want to hurt sales by confirming a pc version that'll come out later? If you really think Cliffy B is that stupid, think again, He knows the last time he said "There are no plans", if he says it again, people won't fall for it a second time, It will still be up in the air, Rumors will kick in, People will be doubtful of exclusivity so they'll wait, Epic doesn't want that, They need something concrete for 360 owners and potential 360 owners that's why he chose his words carefully

I don't think many PC gamers are going to be losing any sleep over this. I thought the first one was a pile of crap and I can't say I was chomping at the bit for the second one.

However I wish Epic would just come out and say they are no longer interested in the PC format. After all most PC gamers have already said they are no longer interested in Epic's games.

There is also the matter of Epic being on this pathetic PCGA Alliance, it is nothing but a joke they are not doing a single game for the PC yet they are part of an organisation that has the job of championing the PC format !!!!!!!

Most PC gamers voted with their wallets and didn't buy the game. That says something about the game I think. It doesn't particularly affect me anyway I have an xbox 360, bought it to play GTA 4. If I so desired I could blow off the layers of dust on the thing and play Gears 2 on it if I wanted.

I get the feeling I will be leaving the Xbox and it's layers of dust alone when Gears 2 comes out, it is such a shallow dull repetitive game I can't understand how anybody can enjoy it. But then I am primarily a PC gamer so I am not as easily pleased.

Where do I start, it was repetitive and dull. The graphics were subpar even on both my PC's (quad + 8800gts and Duo + 8600gt), the graphics were bland and dull, the weapons were weak and uninteresting, the enemy were too generic and dumb. As for the the story line, did it actually have one ? The control scheme was complete tripe if you used a mouse and keyboard (which I do since I play PC games). I never played it with a joypad because I abhor the things. Oh and that is before you take into account the numourous bugs the game shipped with and never got fixed.

This is the first game I have ever failed to finish, I just got completely bored of it. I think I got as far as that vehicle level and thought "f**k this for a game of soldiers I would rather be watching paint dry". There was just nothing remotely good about the game, I think many 360 users just hype the game because it is an "exclusive" to their console. It's the same with Halo that is a very subpar fps but it gets hyped to death on the 360 yet the minute it appears on any other platform it dies without even a whimper.. hmmm I wonder why that is.

If Gears had been a good game it would have sold well on the PC, there is no escaping that. It didn't sell well because PC gamers don't buy into the hype of this. It was at best a subpar uninteresting shooter and PC gamers recognised it for that and didn't buy it. Now from what I see of Gears 2 it remains pretty much the same so it is probably a wise decision not to bring it to the PC, it wouldn't sell because PC gamers expect more out of their games than Epic want to offer.

Sweet, One person speaking on the behalf of everyone else. It is not a good game cause it didn't sell well on PC. That is truly a classic line and shows your age of thought. PC gaming has been dead for a while nothing sells well on PC anymore. Why do you think the top Pc devs are going to consoles, cause no one is buying it on the PC. Why buy it when you can download it for free, there is usally 2 to 3 times more poeple playing a game on the PC then what sells show. Just the fact of people pirating software. And if your head is so far up your PC's case then don't troll in the gears page that something you hate so much.

If that is the case then please tell me why other PC titles have NO problem selling well over a million ? Games like Witcher, Stalker, Crysis, C&C 3 and Orange Box don't seem to have a problem. Yet for some bizarre reason Gears probably didn't even sell 100,000 on the PC, hm I wonder why that is ? It's because the game was crap and PC gamers saw it for that.

I guess you don't like people trashing your beloved "exclusive", Gears is a third rate game there is NOTHING special about it whatsoever except it gives fanboys a warm glowing feeling because it's on THEIR console. If Gears had been any good it would have easily sold well over a million on the PC but it didn't despite the fact lesser known titles did.

As for trolling the "Gears" page, hm this is about the PC, I own a PC therefore I think I am pretty much entitled to comment on a story relating to the PC. So might I suggest it is you that takes your head out of Microsofts arse and look around the PC is not dying the only people that even think that are console gamers like you, hm strange that isn't it.

Rubbish. No hugely successful console games have sold really well on the PC if they were ported one year later! Even for so-called 'good' games! In fact, this is true all systems, including from one console to another.

The fact is, for a 'big' game, most gamers who want to play it would have done so long before the game is ported to another format a year or so later! Either they had the games system already or some will purchase the games system just to play the game.

So it's nonsense to suggest that sales of Gears is a reflection of PC gamers' opinions of Epic as you claim, since even if Gears was the best game released this gen, PC sales of the year old 360 game would have still been lacklustre.

With that, I do agree with N-R-G with regards to the sales. For me..I would think that pc gamers might have already played the game on 360...and now waited for the port. Also, the million selling games you mentioned either were never on consoles to steal sales......or came to the console later. So to strengthen your argument you need to display games that started out on the console first, then so a million on pc......that way it will seems like a Gears of War thing....and not just console to pc games in general.

All I see is you guys making excuses for why it didn't sell. The reason it didn't sell is becaue PC gamers didn't care enough to buy it. The reason why they didn't buy it is immaterial, they obviously didn't care about the franchise enough to purchase a copy for their PC.

It is the same with Halo, yes Halo is a big franchise on the Xbox but outside of that NO ONE CARES. Both Gears and Halo are perfect examples of hyped games that console gamers clamour after but when they are brought to a more mature audience they flop badly.

I personally think no Gears 2 on the PC is a good thing, the pc does not need a boring repetitive, generic shooter like Gears 2. It isn't a title I would buy after the sorry excuse for a game the first one was. Hell I wouldn't even waste the bandwidth of my internet on the second one.

I'm a PC gamer as well and have been since the late 80s (and a gamer long before that on consoles, arcades and mini-computers), but I don't push my personal views to represent that of a whole group of gamers as you've done so here.

You claim that MOST PC gamers have SAID they are not interested in Epic's games and you use Gears as proof of this. I pointed out that a) It's only SOME PC gamers and b) a port of a year old console game is not proof of your views.

Now you bring Halo into the equation, which imo shows you want to shift the argument into PC vs XBox to avoid having to provide proof of your views. I'll remaind you that Halo was released on the PC just under TWO YEARS after the XBox version, and therefore is subject to the same conditions I mentioned earlier.

To repeat myself, sales of such ports says nothing about how good or bad the games are or what PC gamers think of them or the developers, and therefore I'm waiting for you to provide a list of console games which when ported to the PC a year or so later, sold really well, since you are suggesting that Gears and Halo are exceptions to the rule.

So where are they Charmers?

My point is (as it's been since the beginning), is that only SOME PC gamers will feel the way you do about Epics's games and Halo, and you are entitled to YOUR views and I respect them on that basis. But you don't speak for the majority of PC gamers, and you certainly don't speak for ME, so don't expect your wild claims about the views of MOST PC gamers to go unchallenged.

Dear god do you need a lesson in business or something. I said most PC gamers, because quite clearly most PC gamers were not interested in the Gears or Halo franchise on the PC because they didn't buy it.

It is immaterial that the games were released later on the PC the fact is NO ONE bought the game. So if the majority of PC gamers didn't buy the game I think that is a pretty big clue that the majority of gamers are not interested in Gears on the PC.

Now for the record I did buy Gears on the PC and even I don't want Gears 2 on the PC. So for the record it isn't me claiming on behalf of the majority of PC gamers it is Sales figures showing the majority of PC gamers don't want the game.

It is quite clear that the majority of PC gamers are getting fed up with Epic's stuff you just have to look at the simultaneous release of UT3 another game that didn't do incredibly well. Thankfully this time Epic didn't get my money because I tried the demo first and saw how badly the game stank.

So there you have it I don't think any PC gamer is going to be slitting their wrists over no Gears 2 on the PC it was a third rate, dull repetitive shooter and MOST pc gamers saw it for that and didn't buy it.

I agree with you, Crysis was being shown off around the shows before halo 3 came out, after seeing and playing crysis why would people bother with Halo 3.

then you have the halo 3 online fights lol they are slow as PC FPS people were saying are they playing for real or is the video slowed down, lol.

As for UT3 I was thinking of picking it up but to be honest I didn't bother with it as it hasn't really been upgraded from UT2004/5 even quake is over the hill now, iD will probably notice the lack of sales as well.

Epic and iD are porting their engines mainly to keep the amount of incoming cash up more than adding much to their PC FPS engines.

I've seen the whole consoles vs PC statement before back in the 90's and it was the exact same stuff back then as what it is now, all the hardcore console people say PC is dead consoles wipe out the PC but it's said when their not much coming for the PC and then the new PC engines come out add so much extra stuff that blows away the consoles that everyone swaps back to the PC.

No I don't need lessons in business, but it's clear you do, especially since you keep dodging the question.

As I've stated already, the sales of Gears and Halo are no different to EVERY OTHER console to PC port a year or so after release on the console.

EVERY port of a console game released at such a long period after the initial console release has had relatively poor sales on the PC. Therefore the sales of Gears of War and Halo is NOT an example of PC gamer's opinions of these games because they are no different to any other similar ports. Which part of that fact do you not understand? Where's your examples of console games which have had massive sales on the PC a year later?

Oh gee, so you mean another developer has some games which sell well and others that don't. Well how original, we've never seen that before. *rolleyes* :)

What I find disappointing about your assessment and attitude here is that it is no different than those gamers who latch on to any negative news of poor game sales on the PC and claim it's proof that the PC is dying as a games format. An incorrect claim which I've been reading for about 15 years.

Getting back to these ports, there are many reasons why a game doesn't sell well, reasons which include the quality of the game (although great games do flop, even on the PC), the state of the market, competition with other recent game releases (especially those in the same genre), hardware requirements, demo impressions and so on.

So to put it all down to most PC gamers "getting fed up with Epic's stuff" is a very simplistic way of looking at it, as simplistic as a console fan using the poor sales of a high profile PC game as further proof that the PC is dying as a games format (and I've read that countless times over the years).

Anyway, since you want to be pedantic over game sales and ignore the facts behind them, the amount of PC gamers out there is simply huge, with PCs ranging from the lowest specs to the highest specs. Hence there are NO games which sell to the _majority_ of PC gamers (i.e. over 50% of them), therefore sales can only ever be a comparative measure to other games. So yes, Gears and Halo sold less than numerous other PC games, but for the reasons I've given already, not because of some borg-like opinion amoungst the collective as you suggest. :P

So once again, speak for yourself, not for other PC gamers.

Why would they need to it will likely sell at least 4-5million on the 360 by the end of the year, espically with a price cut, MS marketing, a huge shooter loving install base and Xmas coming

And since Gears 1 cost only 10ml to make Gears 2 cant cost much more so they should easily make a profit

Xbox360 price cut + Gear of War2 bundle = The 360's going to own the holiday season hands down.

Edit : what can compete with this (don't tell me Resistance lol)? Except a Little Big Planet bundle, I don't see anything that can compete with that this fall.

I agree that Gears 2 will be huge. But I don't see it causing a massive sales spike on the hardware.

The 360 sales have hit the wall. The people really hyped about Gears 2 will be those that have played Gears 1.

I see huge sales for the game (obviously), but nothing more than a short term moderate increase on the hardware front.

Sony seem to be going for a more varied line up of releases. LBP, Resistance 2 and so on - as individual IP's they can't compete with Gears 2 - but add it all up and it's a stronger overall line up with more depth. None of the PS3 titles will be massive hardware sellers, but the appeal to casual AND hardcore gamers is greater than what the 360 has to offer.

Between Sept and Jan I think we'll see the PS3 beat the 360 sales every month except November (maybe). And if the 360 gets beat in November then MS have a serious issue on their hands.

@7.3 Personally i see the 360 has a much more varied and stronger line-up
VP 2, Banjo 3, Fable 2, Gears 2, Left 4 Dead, Last Remnant compared to SOCOM, R2, Motorstorm, LBP. 360 has a lot more genre covered for both Hardcore and causual

7.5 - You really think the MS line-up is more varied?
I think when taking into consideration the variety, you also have to consider the quality. I think 360 has a couple of good games coming, but surely they don't compare in total to Sony's total line-up. L4D is a PC game as well, and I think we would be considering exclusives only. I was considering getting a 360, but they have nothing coming besides Fable that would justify the purchase for me. It would take a couple of those games to rival LBP alone, in my opinion.

Unfortunately ... it might be true. I'm essentially a PC gamer. I would like to have it for PC, but, the first one did not sell that well on the PC and UT3 did not sell that well either.

Remains to bee seen if the costs of porting the game to PC justifies it by the sales for the PC. Unless NVIDIA pays them for the porting through the TWIMTBP program, it will be difficult to see it on PC.

Microsoft also in nowadays does not give a dam about PC gaming. They have very few (or none) games for PC anounced.

And piracy is over-blown. There are many arguments, but the best thing would be visiting a thread on tweakguides forums. Some excellent and knowledgable people have discussed this in great deal over there. A great read.
Games do sell on PC. In recent games, Crysis is about to touch 2 million (and this game is hardware demanding so it will sell over time when people get better hardware), Sins of a solar empire sold 1 million (without any copy protection), The Witcher sold much more than one million (despite of many technical issues, cause it was a great game gameplay wise) and now that the enhanced edition coming, add at least half a million more, Command and conquer 3 sold 1 million, Supreme commander sold about one million, CoD4 sold more than one million on PC, Orange box sold much more than the console versions combined, World in conflict sold pretty well, Lost planet sold a million (thanks to steam), Bioshock sold well. Many other games were hit but I cant remember the names. And many of the above sales doesnt include digitally distributed versions.
First of all, if good games werent selling on PC, there would have been no games.
The matter of fact with Gears of war was that it just wasnt that good game, especially on PCs. PCs already had much better graphics in many games, the game design was more suited to consoles, storyline was thin and it had hiccups issues and game saves issues and many more technical issues on PCs.
And above these all, many many people had already played it on Xbox360s.
Still I say, Gears 2 will come to PCs sooner or later.
And once again, Gears didnt sell much on PCs because of the issues it had. Its easier to blame everything on piracy, but good games sell and those developers dont complain that much.

You say this sold 1 mill and that sold 1 mill. What is the install base of PC's and tell me if those are truly good numbers. Or base it on sales for Nvidia or ATI and compare game sales to there card sales. PC gaming is on the decline, no matter how you cut it. And the fact of it is, It's cause of PC gamers stealing games.
