By crappy I assume you mean faulty and if you do then you are correct! Although it seem's like the new Xbox 360s really don't suffer from that problem.

1.4 - The failure rate has slowly been reduced from 33%
To a current figure of 8~10%, but it's still early in the console's life cycle and there's no telling how many Xbox 360s will ultimately suffer from hardware failure. Also, that's a much higher failure rate than what the PS3 and Wii have, which is less than 1%.

MSFT wanted to get a head start due to PlayStations smothering hype, and in the effort of trying to get an edge the superior hardware of the 360 caused more heat then expected. The 360 is much more capable and they did not know it would warp the motherboard. lol

Wow...you should really get another hobby.....especially if you did not cut and past all that.

"It had no support for modern movies like BluRay like the PS2 and Xbox had for DVD " This comment alone is sort of poor...Microsoft gets bashed because it made the choice not to jump into a format war with equipment that was untested?

"So after 7 years in the market and 7 billion dollars wasted, Microsoft" Hmmmm, so its not unusual for companies to lose tons of upstart money in order to get their foot in the door?

All companies make mistakes......lets just hope that Microsoft continues to learn from their errors.

Give it up. No one forced them to do anything it was out of greed they released first because they wanted all the next-gen fans to buy their system first. It's a failure now they have scapegoat number 4,000,002 as to why their system is a POS. Take responsibility for your action MS you pushed the system to be released because you didnt care about down the road

1.20 - PS3 is continuing to outsell it by 33%.
YTD 2008 sales:

PS3: 6M
360: 4.5M

Projected 2008 year end sales:

PS3: 10M
360: 6.7M

Factors that can change these numbers:

-price drop
-significant change in features
-key software releases
-economic or other factors that affect consumer spending

And all of that is due to MS releasing the 360 a year earlier. It's kind of sad that your messiah console was outsold by a device most people on this site don't even consider a next-gen console. The better graphics and games argument is also due to being out a year early and same with the RPGs. Game companies exist to make money not satisfy fanboy delusions. So, basically the only advantage the 360 had was a headstart which is slowly becoming it's biggest liability.

How come the PS3 hasn't caught up yet? Doesn't that make it even worse than the 360? What's the excuse?

Is 2009 the new year when the PS3 will miraculously fly past the competition? History tells another story. Fanboys have been preaching that bs since 2006 and it has not happened yet. First it was 2007, nothing. Then 2008, still a 5 million gap. Not even with all that Sony brand recognition, console history and loyal fanbase in the back are they able to place ahead of the faulty hardware that is the 360. Let's bet on 2009 then, shall we?

Kind of touchy, aren't you?

I didn't mention the PS3 at all. I was merely commenting on the the statements above. The PS3 is doing fine in my opinion and as long as decent games keep coming I really don't care too much about what Sony does, or any other company for that matter. The 2 consoles I own are enough for what I need.

My point being that, in response the the posts above, that they are cheering over a head start. When the score is 9 million to 0, it takes a while to catch up (for Sony). And history shows the Wii flying by both the 360 and the PS3; so what was your point about history?

While I have my console preferences, I am not one of those delusional fanboy douches that run around screaming about "2008: the year of the playstation 3". I don't do that. I prefer to argue and debate in a civil manner.

I'll bet you can't break away from your 360 rhetoric and give an actual intelligent response to my original comment.

And lastly, the 5 million gap, is only in America. I hate to break it to you, there is a world outside the U.S. Have a nice day.

Loyal fanbase my a$$. the average buyer doesn't give a sh!t about console brand, only fanboys do.

the average buyer looks for ONE THING ONLY, what system has the god damn games? but not just any games, thier favourite games. if u have those games u win.
most of my friends with ps2's havent bought any next gen consoles yet cuz the games arnt here. first console to release them is the console that will win.

p.s. MS did a bad move releasing its games on both windows and xbox. since i can pretty much get the best selling games for the 360 on pc theres no point in buying a 360 atm. they should have made them exclusive to xbox only.

two things.

1. Game selection

2. Affordable price point.

As soon as the majority of PS franchise arrive on the PS3 as well as a more afforadble price point is achieve for the PS3. You will see the PS3 truly flex its muscle.

Remember that the PS3 has closed the gap by 5 million already while at 400 minmum (PS2 launch price of 299 btw) with only RC and MGS being the only true PS exclusive franchise that have arrived sofar. Alot more PS2 owners are waiting for either the price to go down or for their fav franchise to arrive like GT,GOW,Socom,Jak,ICO etc to arrive before they buy a PS3.

The fact that the x360 is almost 3 years old with a more affordable price point and more AAA titles according to game ranking sites suggest to me that the 100 million strong PS2 fanbase are waiting for the right time to buy their PS3. When that happens. Expect the PS3 to fly pass competition.

"How come the PS3 hasn't caught up yet? Doesn't that make it even worse than the 360? What's the excuse?"

Well, these things take time. One shouldn't expect the PS3 to surpass the 360, a console established a year earlier, over night. Even within one YEAR after the PS3's launch would be banking on astronimical sales considering Microsoft had success getting 360's in homes before Sony even arrived on the next-gen scene.

You could say, "But the Wii's already passed everyone." That's true... but the Wii was able to tap into a completely different market... on top of being inexpensive. I believe the PS3 and the 360 are competing for the same market (mostly). At least I'd say their markets are much closer to one another than the Wii's. Now for those who support the Wii, please don't take it like I'm saying there are NO harcore Wii/Nintendo fans. I'm simply saying that so far Nintendo's managed to reach the widest audience. In many cases it's created its very own.

Sony has done well to cut into Microsoft's lead though. I'm not just saying "OMG PS3z RoXzOrzs heHE!" but they done well to minimize the gap that once stood at around 10 million (now a little under 5). And over the past year they've been able to they've been able to hold the #2 spot in hardware sales (behind the Wii of course) in the big 3 territories (North America, Europe, Japan). All while being the most expensive console out. Not to mention they've managed to keep their previous console alive and have a handheld doing well for them. That must indicate that they're doing SOMETHING right. And it can't just be people looking into getting a cheap Bluray player because we've seen the software sales increase significantly. Is it selling more software than Microsoft yet? No, it's not. But it has steadily been gaining ground despite the fact that we still haven't seen a TON of big exclusives released for it. Fall will be the biggest battle ground I think with Sony and Microsoft's 'big guns' coming out. We'll just have to see what happens there.

"Is 2009 the new year when the PS3 will miraculously fly past the competition? History tells another story."

History can tell many stories and it's not always a way to look into the future. It depends what you look at. You can take a gander at history and see that many consoles open up to a slow start. You can look back and see that Sony was able to establish the PS2 as the best selling console of all time. So depending on what part of the past you look on... it can bode well or not so well. You can go back to the begginning of each console and say "PS3 had no games" and "360 had RROD" but I believe the past isn't as relevent as some make it to be. At least in certain situations.

I personally believe the PS3 will surpass the Xbox 360 in total worldwide sales for its lifetime after awhile (hard to say exactly when) and perhaps overtake the 360's install base in America as well... though the latter may take longer. I don't think that the 360 is a bad console at all. I have one for the games I'll never see on my PS3 and it's a good gaming machine in my opinion. Even if I do prefer the PS3. This is just what a I believe will happen. Not saying it's guaranteed. But it's my take on the whole thing.

6.8 - Xbox360 is last in sales
2008 Sales(Jan - Aug)

PS3: 6.0M
360: 4.5M

Consumer research suggests that the PS3's stronger first party and exclusive franchises, broader consumer appeal, and richer feature-set as a multimedia device have spurred 2008 sales to a consistent 33% average month over month delta in sales relative to the 360.

Based on these numbers it's estimated that the PS3 will have outsold the 360 by 3M in 2008. If trend of increasing sales disparity in favor of the PS3 continues in 2009 the PS3 will match and possibly exceed the 360's installed base within 13-16 months.

Factors that can alter these ongoing trends:

-price drop
-significant change in features
-key software releases
-economic or other factors that affect consumer spending

on the price point. Xbox 360 launch prices were: $400 premium/$300 core. I would agree that if Microsoft had known about Sony's delay to Nov 2006 they would have launched at a later date with an internal HD-DVD drive.

plain and simple Market Share
what upsets me is the arrogance of MS releasing a product with known faults...
and before anyone says they didnt know about their faulty product, which they did, it would make MS look worse saying they didnt do enough homework to even know their was a problem(s)
in the end MS paid 1 billion and got market share they wanted and were successful at doing so

8.4 - Marketshare and the ability to determine trends by being the first
was the goal. They also hoped that multi-player games would drive sales organically as friends of 360 owners would buy 360s to be able to play with their friend. Sadly for Microsoft, their focus on the bottom-line caused them to put up the one biggest obstacle to this organic growth in the form of exorbitant subscription fees for online multi-player play.

By not allowing online play to be free, Microsoft stunted it's own growth and allowed the PS3 to establish itself in terms of sales. This also allowed Sony to develop it's own online service to such an extent that it's not only free but offers arguably better features.

Microsoft's other miscalculations that can be attributed to a short-term focus on profit were to charge extra for features that they already knew would be included with the PS3 hardware such as hard-drive, wifi and Blu-Ray.

Microsoft had a full 12 months with no competition to shape the market to their liking and they failed to do so because of their mistaken (some would say arrogant) assumption that they would not have to "throw a bone" to the consumer. In the mean time, the Wii and PS3, which are complete online capable consoles out of the box and require no additional costly hardware accessories to perform all advertised functions, have taken over the market.

If there's one lesson to take away is that nickel-and-dime pricing with required accessories does not work in the game console market. By shooting for a low $299 price-point they sold a non-fuctional product (360 Core) that required hundreds of dollars in additional accessory purchases ($100 HDD, $100 Wifi, $50/yr Online, $200 HD-DVD) to actually perform all advertised functions. They alienated consumers with the original xbox by requiring a remote control accessory for DVD playback when the PS2 played DVD's out-of-the-box with the PS2 DVD remote being nothing more than an optional purchase for convenience. It seems Microsoft did not learn this vital lesson. The reality is that the console market is not tolerant of required accessories. The history of game consoles is littered with such failures.

9 - We all know Sony intimidated and screwed over Microsoft
With their E3 Announcement and Videos, and keeping the actual release date a secret for so long was definitely a big accomplishment. PS3 wasn't even finalized until Summer 2008, so you can tell how pissed Microsoft was.

If Xbox 360 had launched with an internal hard drive as standard, as well as an internal HD-DVD drive as standard, Blu-ray would have lost and PS3 would probably be on the rocks right now.

I doubt PS3 would be on the rocks right now... considering Microsoft's 25mil install base vs. Sony's 100 mill PSx and 150 mill (and rising) PS2 install base.

With those parts, we're looking at an expensive machine that no one would buy...

Sony has brand recognition on it's side (which is why they were able to sell as much as they did even with that much of a high price point)

Microsoft have nothing and are fighting for any scrap they can get (though it seems they are getting tired of fighting as of late lol)
