The problems with the Sony Playstation PS3 are well documented and are why the PS3 is running third and last for sales in this generation of the console wars.
However they have gradually got their act together and are catching up. But do they have what it takes to be a winner again?

*yawn* this is old news. The reason the PS3 is behind the 360, in case anyone reading this article has been living in a cave for the last 2 years, is because it launched a full 12 months after the 360. The Wii has a rapid adoption rate because it appeals mostly to casual gamers as well as costing quite a bit less than the other players. Simple number comparisons show this. On top of that, the PS3 is overtaking sales in most areas. North America may be the exclusion as the 360 outsells it here and there some months, yet the PS3 is hardly lagging in sales. It's doing just fine.

The N4g censorship brigade have struck in full force, even on a pro ps3 article lol. i guess your blacklisted for speaking about sony in a less than glowing light.

As for the topic at hand, it seems like they are digging themesleves out with one hand and shoveling in more sand with the other. The games are apparently coming, and a few look very impressive indeed but moves like cutting backward compatibily, more expensive multi plats and the total lack of RPGS coming in the near future make you question the decisions of sony HQ.

Well ill give your site a hit just to work up the n4g police.

What I find extremely sad with this guy is how quite a few people come here on N4G and other sites who AREN'T "professional analysts" (like this uninformed out of the loop BIASED old guy) and have much better factual supported information and or evidence whether it be for OR against Sony/MS!...and they don't try to profit of N4G's back either. Just read any of Figboy's posts right here on N4G, definitely much more well written, thought out and factual than ANYTHING Bruce has EVER spewed!

No, because Sony wasn't in a hole. They were only perceived to be in a hole. A perception which cost MS a great deal of money to engineer.

Now, are they clearing that perception? Yes, for those blind enough to have bought into the MS BS machine, many of those are starting to catch on to the facts of the matter.

we find it hard to forget what you've spewed beforehand so forgive us for our cynicism and distrust of your motives. You don't like Sony/PS brand or Japan even. You're full of hate so we will NEVER use any of your more positive pieces to prove anything to anybody because its still full of fail.

Like Morgan said, the hole that sony were supposedly in was a manufactured hole. No, things weren't perfect but on reflection you can see that the ps3 was/is doing better than the 360 so my question is: who was in a bigger hole?

You scream about the gimped ps3 hardware (untamed) yet you've failed to show me a game that beats our gt5p (demo) or drakes on a machine that is supposedly 'easy' to program for and has been out a year longer. You've pissed on psn (not perfect)yet have yet to show me a game other than on pc where i can play 20vs20 online without lag. You shout about sony practices (some are questionable, yes) yet fail to see the positives in their continued support for the ps2 and not drop their previous console like u know who and even spin that in a negative light.

You my friend are an adult troll somebody with a huge chip on your shoulder or on a payroll (maybe all of the above)......again, why should we listen to you???

the PS3 not selling to it's potential.

Those reasons about lack of graphical power is BS. It has been the price and for a little while the lack of games that slowed the PS3 sales.

A $600 launch price is hard to swallow when there are cheaper alternatives with a larger library of great games (360, PS2...)

I bought a launch 60gb PS3 for a few reasons. It was the cheapest and best blu-ray player and I liked the games that they had to offer at the time. Plus I still have PS2 games that I still want to buy and play on PS3 (Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, X-men: Legends II, Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, Bully and I'm playing FFXII, The Warriors, Oden Sphere, and Okami now)

With the current price, better line-up of games coming, and an understanding by consmers that the PS3 is actually cheaper than the some of competition when you factor in things like add-on Hard Drives, WiFi, Pay-for-Play Online service, and even HD-DVD drives, etc - The PS3 sales will and already have begun to explode world-wide.

FYI

1) Sony is more than Playstation. I know you know that but think for a second. What big Sony Movies came out during the PS3 lifecyle? Compare the actual gross profit - production cost. Add that figure and compare into SCE division losses for a whole year, fiscal 2007.

2)SOE also was profitable in helping to reduce the losses of SCE. I'll be damned, an actual SOE Game is finally coming to the PS3. Also Televisions/camera's/gadgets were profitable.

3) You talk about the pitfalls of PSN with younger kids running amock? Guess what it happens on Xbox Live too.

The IMMATURE kids running amock DOESN'T DEPEND ON A SYSTEM IT DEPENDS
ON THE GAME. Bruce I thought you were a gamer....How did you not know this?

What makes Hiphopgamers show any better? They are both biased. At least Bruce's articles are readable. Hiphopgamer can't write so he makes videos. Seriously, where are these idiots he's talking about on PSN? I'm yet to experience a single one. They're all over the place on Live. It could be because more people have headsets... but still. I'm not saying Xbox Live is a bad service at all. It's very good (though I do feel it's slightly overpriced to go online when you factor in a wireless adapter) but there's tons of little kids and morons on there. If you're using that as a negative for PSN then you'd HAVE to say the same about Live. Though from my experience it's much worse on the latter.

As for Sony being in a hole. I wouldn't really say they ever were. As with most new consoles it takes awhile for it to get going. They're now in a great position and carrying alot of momentum. Obviously nothing's touching the Wii... but they've already passed the 360 in Europe despite releasing long after. They've outsold the 360 almost every month so far this year in NA... and though they need to strengthen their base in Japan they've consistantly outsold the 360 there as well. All of this being done while at a considerably higher price point than their competitor. And some of the biggest titles are still yet to come. The PS3 used to be the butt of many jokes not too long ago... my, my, how things change so quickly.

It appears that we agree on most things except the pre adolescent kids.

The thing about PSN is that because it is free the kids have multiple accounts (just like they do on here) so they can run amok with impunity (just like they do on here).

Oh, and Sony were definitely in a hole. They had to issue more stock and sell of part of the company to finance the PS3 losses.

1. PSN does allow people to make multiple accounts, but the lack of boxed headset/cost of console means the main users have bought it for themselves and aren't idiots. There's way more idiots on live, since the average user seems to be about 12 years old and mommy and daddy have bought them a new toy.

2. They sold the Cell factories to Toshiba (who they co-developed Cell with) because it was cheaper to buy the processors than keep factories running. To me, that sounds like a smart business decision, since it was Ken Kutaragi's idea to build the factories instead of outsourcing anyway

If you are going to thank him for his positive contribution to the thread then I should thank you for you positive contribution to game journalism. And I mean that with all of the sarcasm I can muster. I have never witnessed a self-promotionalist with articles that are so poorly researched and full of the type of vomitus I expect to read in a high school newspaper. Scratch that, I have read significantly better in those papers the local kids pass out in the community.

No one can take anything you write seriously and it isn't just the mountain of inaccuracies or the spotty use of grammar either, It is the fact you have zero objectivity. I often engage little myself but then again I make no pretenses to that fact. Whereas with you, well, I have seen mannequins in ventriloquist acts with a better sense of self determination.

If I were an expert in any intellectual field, would it be okay to constantly cite myself? All the links lead to previous articles which oddly enough, don't cite any sources. Actually, it would be helpful to cite anything at some point, otherwise people could post ridiculous things on blogs such as that the world is flat, or that Big Foot was found today. In other words, it would be nice to establish some credibility at some point in time.

Sony lost more money selling PS3 at a loss than it made during the five years of PlayStation 2 peak sales. That figure is estimated as being in the US$3 billion ballpark.

Good References however think about..

...how many blu-ray disc were bought because of the PS3. Think about how Philips and Sony gets royalties from licensing the technology.

You do realize:

1) Digital broadcasting is becoming US as well and many other countries standards.

2)Walmart/Target/etc are selling HDTV's (720p and above) and have more space for the HDTV's? Right

3) That almost all of the HDTV Hooked up are playing a never ending blu-ray advertizements? Hell I looked for Refridgerator at Sears and could hear the commericial from the other side of the store.

4)Blu-rays adoption is faster than DVD was.

5)Movies studios are pushing blu-ray because they get to sell the same movie twice to the consumer (greedy, but smart)

6)Blu-ray Disc average sales prices for a title are going down and are top sellers on Amazon.com and other sites?

Hehe, it's not doomed, just deep doo doo. I only like the 360 because that's where my rpgs are. I don't care about online, or the next shooter that's coming out. I don't like RROD lol. Because I don't use online, I can mod it if I want, and I'll sodder the connection points well. If the PS3 was getting more rpgs I'd get that system for sure. I'm going to get a ps2 unless ps3 starts producing more rpgs. I'm mainly a wii and pc gamer.

There is a name for what he did there. "Playstation PS3" - even though the PS stands for playstation. So he is effectively saying "Sonys Playstation Playstation3". I know NCIS did it for the first season when it was called Navy NCIS (even though the N stands for Navy.

It is all to do with search engine optimisation (SEO).

Basically when people search they use keywords. If I have those keywords in my article then it is more likely to be found. So saying Sony Playstation PS3 covers all the options and makes sure that people find my article.

Also:
Sony = manufacturer
Playstation = brand or product line
PS3 = model
