What Happened to the Xbox 360's IPTV?

Gamers first heard of the intriguing service that the Xbox 360 was going to offer all the way back in January 2007. At the time it was seen as a first for consoles and a very innovative step forward in the home console market but now Playstation have their own method for delivering television to the living room.

So just where did the console's IPTV go?

IPTV was mentioned at CES 08 during |Microsoft's press conference.
http://arstechnica.com/news...

It's hopefully still on track, but knowing Microsoft, they wont release a single shred of info about the service until it is done.

So where is Microsoft's IP-TV?

"Everybody ganged up on the kiddies so let get revenge. IPTV has been in the works for quite some time and I think it's pretty obvious that it's taking time to get it right."

Just like what Sony was doing with Home. They may have announced it way too early but they were taking their time to get it right as well. Now you're trying to say 'Microsoft is taking their time to get it right?' When Sony was taking their time to get Home right, everyone (media included) bashed them to oblivion. 'Where's Home'? 'Why is it taking so long?' 'Where is it?'.

Even Microsoft threw some cheap shots at Sony for delaying Home until it was ready.

This has nothing to do with *revenge*. You just *think* I'm getting revenge because I asked a question.

"Dude get a life seriously a quit trying to start a fight over something this stupid. Some of you people on this site are just messy angry little individuals that need a good pimp slap in your life."

First of all, I am not a dude. Second of all, I asked a reasonable question. I asked 'where is it?'. Yeah, I need a good pimp slap because I asked that question?

If people are going to ask Sony what's taking so damn long with Home, then they should be asking what's taking so damn long with this service.

Here: http://www.microsoft.com/pr...

"IPTV on Xbox 360™ is expected to be available to consumers by holiday season 2007 and will be offered by providers that are deploying TV services over broadband networks based on the IPTV Edition software platform."

Awww, I'm sorry I hurt your feelings when I stated the truth. This article does have something to do with Microsoft because Microsoft are the ones who promised the service. This IP-TV was promised in 2007 (thanks Action Bastard, and major ownage there) and yet it's not here. If Microsoft is going to *bully* Sony about Home, then where is their IP-TV?

You still don't get the point I'm trying to make.

The article is just trash writen by another bitter fanboy.

oh and comparing home and IPTV is just stupid. Home is a few lines of coding vs trying to get a service up and running that will have 100's of channels in multiple countries and in different languages. If you want to compare home to something it be closest to the new xbox dashboard.

It's obvious that you fail to check my profile and see that I'm actually a female. But that's okay because I expected it from ignorant people these days.

It's also obvious that you didn't read my comments in full before you posted your comments. And if I love/protect my PS3, then 360 owners do the same exact thing, even when the company from which their console came from is as hypocritical as they come. They can admit no wrong at all whatsoever.

"The article is just trash writen by another bitter fanboy."

Yes, written by a bitter fanboy. It seems that this *fanboy* actually had a point, considering that this was a feature dating back to January of *last* year. And yet Sony was attacked for delaying Home...kind of interesting to see 360 owners excuse Microsoft for this when they were attacking PS3 owners for Home.

I wasn't born yesterday.

"oh and comparing home and IPTV is just stupid. Home is a few lines of coding vs trying to get a service up and running that will have 100's of channels in multiple countries and in different languages. If you want to compare home to something it be closest to the new xbox dashboard."

Just like comparing Home to Second Life? But 360 owners have no problem doing that, right?

And excuse you? Home is just a few lines of coding? What the hell...do you work for Sony or something? You have *no* idea how long it takes for Sony to work on Home so I suggest not *trying* to pretend that you know about it. If you're going to take up that logic with me, then I could say that this IP-TV takes a few lines of coding.

You are unbelievable and obviously very blind.

You have some nerve calling me a fanboy (or girl) when you're acting the same exact way.

And look at the disagrees fly! Obviously I struck some nerves with those comments didn't I?

Most of you sony fanboys are so ignorant and are just so happy to jump on any anti microsoft news to make you feel better about your console.

@juuken: Dont ever use the word "everybody".Just because you are a troll does not mean others are.Check my comment history and then tell me when i have made a comment about home,in fact i bet you won't find me trolling PS3 stories ever.

Why because i am more than happy with my 360 so don't care about the opposition.

To the rest of you guys: You do realise that Microsoft has to rely on 3rd parties to deploy the IPTV service on the 360, unlike sony that is developing home all bu it self. At CES 08 microsoft stated that it was almost ready and BT (British Telecom) will start rolling out the service later on in the year., and if you stay in the uk you would realise that BT as a company are very very slow company.

There was even an article on the sunday times in 06 about a company suing BT Vision about a breach in contract that made them delay the services that they where contracted to provide, which in turn lost the company millions.unfortunately i can't find the story on the internet.

And too any person especially PS3 only owners. If you feel that the reason you are spamming 360 threads all the time like Juuken ,is not to try and justify your console purchase, then i ask you one question. Why don't you do the same for the wii or DS?

"@juuken: Dont ever use the word "everybody".Just because you are a troll does not mean others are.Check my comment history and then tell me when i have made a comment about home,in fact i bet you won't find me trolling PS3 stories ever."

Why thank you.

I am a troll indeed, considering I've been on this account from since I ever came here and never felt the need to create multiple accounts to harass others.

I'm sure you wouldn't call the other 360 owners trolls when they consistently use fake accounts to debubble/bubble their comrades/enemies. Maybe *everyone* isn't a word to use but there are *people* who actually troll PS3 articles and then want to accuse PS3 owners of actually doing the same thing.

"Why because i am more than happy with my 360 so don't care about the opposition."

Then good. I never implied that you shouldn't be happy with your 360.

"To the rest of you guys: You do realise that Microsoft has to rely on 3rd parties to deploy the IPTV service on the 360, unlike sony that is developing home all bu it self. Later on in the year? Um...yeah, this is 2008. This was back in 2007. Yeah, very, very slow company. I don't see this coming out for the 360 at all.

It'll be more like the XBox 720.

"There was even an article on the sunday times in 06 about a company suing BT Vision about a breach in contract that made them delay the services that they where contracted to provide, which in turn lost the company millions.unfortunately i can't find the story on the internet."

Hmm. interesting.

"And too any person especially PS3 only owners. If you feel that the reason you are spamming 360 threads all the time like Juuken ,is not to try and justify your console purchase, then i ask you one question. Why don't you do the same for the wii or DS?"

This is not a 360 thread. I don't see this in the 360 section. I have as much right as anyone else to comment on any article I wish to comment on. Just because I am not kissing the asses of Microsoft, does not mean that I am not allowed to speak my mind. I just found it very hypocritical of Microsoft to bash Sony for Home, when this service is taking so long.

They shouldn't be throwing stones when their own service is experiencing delays.

And I do not post to justify my purchase. I know why I bought a PS3. It has 1st party games I really want to play as well as 3rd party games I would rather play on the PS3. I know it has very reliable hardware and it won't break on me within a month. I know that I can play bluray and HD-DVD movies on it when I feel lazy.

I do plan on getting a 360 for Christmas but Microsoft needs to get their act together. That's why I'm very critical of them and the 360 at the moment.

I do comment on Nintendo news once in a while because I like Nintendo. I do plan on getting a Wii soon because it does have some good games. I actually think they're doing a really good job in terms of sales.

So I comment on all three consoles.

And thank you again for calling me a troll. Whenever someone doesn't sing the praises of Microsoft, they're immediately attacked for being a troll.

Amazing.

you don't read the articles yet you claim you 'know for sure' lol are you the messiah or something cause it definitely goes both ways here on n4g and i remember the times when the ps3 wasn't doing too well supposedly and the site was full of people hating/doubting on sony including yourself. Maybe juuken generalised which is wrong but for you to claim something as ridiculous as what you did is just as wrong.

There were many people hating on home. You weren't there so you wouldn't know. Even some of MS's people made sly digs at home so why wouldn't the fanboys. You are see through. A question was asked yet the proof that action bstard posted was conveniently ignored. ALL systems have delays. Delays are a part of our industry. The delay of this may have been overemphasized because of the constant digs at sony by SOME about delays on sony's system be it games or services.

@ the wood: Delays are part of life, it happens. If some fanboys take pleasure in seeing the dissatisfaction of other fellow gamers, then to me that is completely sad and distasteful.

Maybe things like these don't bother me because as much as i am a game enthusiast i am also nuts about cars.I have a collection of over 200 car magazines that i started collecting over 12 years ago.If you guys think home and iptv delay is long then you guys should take a look at the motor industry and you will see delays of up to 5 years.

All i know is that IPTV is not just microsoft but there are other players on the table who might be contributing in delaying the product. But maybe this should teach sony and microsoft to stop talking about products until they are sure that the product is ready to be released.

How about *you* come off it?

Nice way of assuming that I won't buy a 360 when I said many, many times I was getting a 360 for Ninja Gaiden 2 and a few rpg's. I've mentioned plenty of times that my uncle was buying me a 360 for my graduation present from college. The only reason why I was back and forth with the 360 is because of the RROD. I would have gotten the 360 *myself* if it wasn't for those hardware issues.

"And considering what other 360 fanboys do in PS3 related articles.Well i don't know, why?because i don't read PS3 related articles to know what happens there. But one thing is for sure, they are no way as bad as you guys."

No where as bad? Oooooooh, are you serious? So it was my imagination when I saw several accounts using *my* username in the most insulting way possible? 'Juuken's Smelly Cunt'? Heh, I'd say that it came from a very immature 360 fan, yes? What about the other accounts people like PoG has? The Mart? What about the accounts someone like 4D has? REDZEV? I could go on and on.

There may a few crazy PS3 owners here, but that is NOTHING compare to what I've seen 360 fanboys do on a daily basis. When you have to sink so low as to insult a member at N4G...it shows that the person literally struck a nerve there.

"I gave you a challenge and i am still waiting for the link. You said every 360 fan jumped on the home delay bandwagon.Pls can you provide the link to when i did it?"

I don't need to provide a link because the evidence is right there. How about doing the research yourself instead of asking me for it? I never did see your comment as a *challenge* for that matter so...um...kinda lame.

You seem to be defending most of these 360 owners a lot, which amuses me to no end. I may have been wrong for generalizing because there are a few decent 360 owners here (Montrealien is one but he also owns a PS3) but I am not wrong for pointing out the general actions most 360 owners have carried out when attacking PS3 owners.

So *you* didn't exactly bash Home.

Bad generalizing on my part.

MSTV requires immense amount of harware to run and has not been well received in the deployed telcos that I am aware of. Alcatel do a better solution....

but anyway deploying such a beast is something MS can do if they really wanted too but it doesnt work well outside of the "local loop" in broadband terms. Let me explain. In an ISP with IPTV they have bandwidth control over the network and can guarentee quality of service, once anyone who feels like it uses the service over many network hops the service starts to degrade.

The bandwith in most homes isnt high and constant quality yet.

So for the instant channel changes over IP most impatient people would demand (this is a fact and tested in the broadband TV world) it doesnt quite work too good.

How do I know this, well I have done the MSTV training and work in broadband TV.

IPTV is not VOD (video on demand), dont get them confused.

With all that hardware they already have and more if they did IPTV rollouts looking at the post http://www.vgwatchdog.com/?... describes current power and server usage for MS atm!

6 - It would cause too many RROD issues.
In the last 3 months I have been using my 360 to watch DVD's, usually 2-3 episodes of Smallville or Stargate Atlantis back to back.

My 1st 360 got RROD after about 6 weeks of this. The replacement looks like it is headed in the same direction because I am now starting to get hardware video problems.

Many people keep their TV on even if they are not even watching it. Imagine all these 360's being on for 5-7 hours a day. Microsoft would be seeing nothing but red rings.

So you getting RROD while watching dvds would equate to RROD in IPTV functionality that does not utilize the dvd drive? Okay...

"Many people keep their TV on even if they are not even watching it" and you know this how? Do plasma owners really leave their televisions running...especially with how much power they can consume. Does DLP users really want to waste precious bulb life? I have to be honest, I do not really know anybody who leaves their tv running when they are not watching or at least listening to it.

8 - They made the mistake of giving a release date
when it wasn't up to them. Since a different provider (AT & T in the states) is actually providing the service, they should have just announced the service period. Better yet, they could have waited until the providers were actually in position to roll out the service. It will be quite some time until fiber optics are in enough places to make it worthwhile. If Microsoft was actually the 1 providing the content, it may have been in place already. They just provide the platform.

10 - Here is an excerpt from the xbox.com forums
An excerpt from the latest Ask Xbox360Fanboy:

"Whatever happened to the IPTV feature that was announced two years ago? It has seemed to gone off the face of the Earth. Have you guys heard anything?

Andy

We get this question every once in a while. The long and short of it, every time we've discussed it with Microsoft, is that it's up to service providers to implement the Xbox 360's IPTV features. They're readily available right now, but providers simply aren't latching onto them. Basically, if your local cable provider wanted to start offering IPTV, the Xbox 360 would be an option for them to use. The demand for IPTV just isn't that big in North America so far, so there really isn't any incentive for companies to start using the features available in the Xbox 360. If and when IPTV becomes more widely used, and if providers decide that they want to use Xbox 360s as a set top box, you'll start to see the feature come to light."

Short version: IPTV for the Xbox 360 is available, just waiting for providers to actually provide the service.

Why?

Because BT have their own box and make more momney from it than letting Microsoft leech of their service.

IPTV is a pipe dream on 360, unless they start cutting in the IPs with hardware sales.
