Devil May Cry 4 "Getting Pirated To Hell And Back"

When it comes to keeping PC gamers in the loop on their console games, Capcom have long been one of the good guys. And how do PC gamers repay the favour? Same way a lot of PC gamers always do: with mass acts of piracy. When quizzed about the state of Devil May Cry 4's PC sales on Capcom's forums, Christian Svensson replied...

1 - Give these guys some respect
They didn't need to make a PC port, it probably just cost them more money to optimize and scale for all the different computers and yet people are pirating their games. Soon pirates will have nothing to steal as PC developers will get fed up.

2 - Agree..
And even so a lot of companies is trying hard to keep up the legitimacy of PC gaming by developing new graphic cards and CPU/GPU what ever.. even though that the games made for PC is "free to download" a minute after their release..

I don't know how long the piracy free PS3 will be around, but it's right now where it counts, as game companies know PS3 does in fact curve piracy to a degree.

4 - Hey, if you can get it for free, why pay for it?
Subscription MMOs seem to be the only source of reliable income for PC developers, and I wouldn't be surprised if all other genres eventually disappear within the next few years.

This just makes development on the PS3 much more tempting! As stated above, the PC devs are just going to get fed up one day and pull their resources on console dev!

If there was a game I really wanted and if I had the option of buying a game or downloading it from a torrent, I would choose to buy it. I support the gaming industry and the developers that put so much hard work into game titles, and purchasing a game is how people should support the gaming industry.

Erm no capcom your Devil May Cry 4 most certainly is NOT getting pirated to hell and back. It is just a case of PC gamers don't want to play this kind of game. I tried the demo and that bored me to tears, so Capcom before you start accusing PC gamers you might want to ask yourself "why is it people won't even waste the bandwidth to pirate the game, let alone throw good money at it".

It's funny really the minute I knew this game was coming too the PC I just KNEW it would bomb and I even said "bet Capcom blames piracy". This isn't a PC user being snobbish it is about games fitting their markets. I wouldn't expect a turn based strategy game set in Napolonic times to do incredibly well on a console, yet they expect DMC4 a typical console game to do well on the PC, what are these guys smoking.

exactly. what is the easiest way to excuse poor sales on PC? blame piracy. Crytek did it with their tech demo of their Cry Engine 2 ala Crysis.
funny...the great PC developers like Valve and Blizzard NEVER complain about piracy. as developers they have implemented their own system to prevent piracy and not let pirates have the upper hand. plus any developer can use/sell their products on Steam or SteamWorks.

It's a pretty good game just not setup for the PC. Heck to play it properly you need a controller and why not just play it on a console then. Instead of just straight porting it they should have added some PC specific features. Plus had it came out the same time as the console versions it probably would have done much better. A lot of PC gamers also have a 360 or PS3, even both! They probably just bought it for those systems first.

If they want to see more sales, they need to put out the PC version along with the console versions. A lot of people already bought the console version, so they just pirated the PC version saying, "Hey, I already bought the game."

I'd love for them to come out with a system where I could pay a little extra and play a game on any console or PC they decided to support for one price. That would be a good way of addressing the hey I bought it for the 360/PS3 so why should I have to pay for it again. It won't help with everyone but bring the more honest gamers back on board the money train.

You constantly hear reports about PC gaming dying.

After years of having their games stolen is it really any surprise?

14 - I'll probably get tons of disagrees but i'll call it like i see it, RTFA!!! [Read the F****** article]
People are idiots, I will say it again, gullible idiots, The media makes up some BS propaganda article that capitalizes on one irrelevant quote to cause controvery and people gobble it up, It just saddens me that people just look at headlines and don't even bother reading the actual content, Now before I go on, I'll clearly state I'm 100% against piracy and acknowledge that it is a problem among many others plaguing the pc platform but that card is being played way too much these days, It is a factor not the main problem, Even the person quoted in the article was quoted on the forums saying Piracy isn't the main problem but it is one of the factors

It's sad that gaming journalism has stooped so low, Sven is more like a PR person on the Capcom forums who intercedes for gamers to the higher powers, He doesn't have as much info, He made an obvious statement, FYI, every pc game goes up on torrents on day one, even World of Warcraft, The only exceptions are Bioshock and Alone in the Dark, Some even come out right after the game goes gold, DMC4 torrent stats are very low compared to your average pc game

He was just making a blanket statement that barely had anything to do with the propaganda these articles are pushing, Let's dissect the argument for a moment here

For instance, Piratebay, one of the biggest torrent suppliers and leechers has only 244 seeders for DMC4 and about 30 leechers,

http://thepiratebay.org/tor...

Even Orange Box came long after retail and mainly on steam has over 900 leechers and 100 seeders,

http://thepiratebay.org/tor...

Even Sins of a Solar empire has more seeders, 346 and even more leechers 72

http://thepiratebay.org/tor...

Oh and another fun fact that even makes this attempt to blackball pc gamers even more pathetic, DMC4 for 360, there are 3 different pirated rips, This is just one of them, Vortex on just one torrent site, It shows over 2000 downloads, Do the math

http://www.mininova.org/tor...

What does that tell you? DMC4's relatively low sales has barely anything to do with piracy, What do you expect when you re release a game that has been available for over 5 months? It's stupidity to make direct comparisons to console sales when first of all both platforms show different sales patterns, PC games get off to a slow start and have longevity, Console games sell like crackers in the first week and die off, Second off, they should be comparing DMC4 pc sales to something like Lost Planet ps3 sales, I bet that didn't sell that well since it's been available on 360 and pc for quite well, People aren't going to buy the same game twice on the norm

Oh and let's not forget the game barely got any press or advertisement for pc, The console versions were hyped to death yet there was barely any coverage on the pc version, PC gamers had to literally hunt for information on the pc version, Hence why Sven came in as the communicator who provided updates, Barely any pc magazine ads or press, How can you expect the DAMN game to sell if you don't market it? Heck, so many millions of pc gamers don't even know this game is available on pc, That's how bad their marketing was, Too much focus on console versions and nada for the pc version

We all know US retail sales for pc games are at all time low due to the skyrocketing trend of digital distribution and the fact that more and more Game retailers are cutting down on their pc stock, If you read the forum posts, you'd notice piracy wasn't even the main point of the thread and it was more about the overall reception of the game, He didn't even talk about Europe sales where pc gaming retail is still going strong, Also, Games sell like wild fire on digital distribution networks, Reception for Lost Planet was exponentially larger on Steam alone than total retail sales, Heck it was still in the top selling Steam games for a long time when it came out

PC gaming isn't dying, it's evolving. Steam is a good proof for this.
And I bet you console games are just as easily found on torrent sites.
