Microsoft and Bungie Having Relationship Problems?

By now, almost everyone knows about Microsoft's very unusual decision to not show Bungie's Halo game at E3 last week.

But after that decision, much sniping has been going on between Microsoft and Bungie. Do I sense a breakup coming soon?

1 - IMO i think that there must've been some money problems with MS after HALO3 came out....
maybe there was some fine print and Bungie got upset... i mean why else would a company after striking gold and make millions leave MS...?? It has to be money related.

I also think that both companies couldn't get to an arrangement by E3 and before they announce anything they have to be in the same page... so they just left the page blank..

I do think that this whole shenanigans seems a bit fishy thou...

Agree - If you think that bungie/MS are having problems

Disagree - If you think that they're working in something too great to show this early.

I think that Bungie feels very limited to Microsoft and the xbox360 and they want to be able to utilize the blueray and cell processor for PS3 and motion controler for the wii if they wanted to. Having to stick to one console and only really reaching out to people in the US is not good for buissness.

hahaha... Bungie is loaded in the money and they love the 360. Bungie bought themselves from MS because they like to have that INDEPENDENT feel that they are use to having.

They know where their fans are and they are probably the developer that is CLOSEST to their fans. Bungie.net proves that. If there fans are only in America, and sold that many copies and made soo much money, I think they will continue to deliver to their fans

but giving the axe to the people that all but single handedly saved the ms gaming division is never a good idea

1.6 - MS could easily make-up to Bungie
just give them a special event all it's own. Easy fix.

You obviously didnt read or understand his comment. He ment that some money didnt end up on Bungies end that should have... meaning M$ maybe kept a little too much. Completely believable.

Like getting FFXIII?

IMO, Mattrick does things way better than Moore. Mattrick is also a former dev so he is closer to things than any manager that just gets into the industry by accident ;)

I dont think that MS and Bungie have problems, if MS was willing to let them go (MS, letting something go, not really usual for them) then its probably a healthy relationship...but its definitely not perfect.

You have a point there. None of us know the real truth behind the E3 Bungie story, and going multiplatform could have been SquareEnix's own decision, as crazy as that may sound. But if Don did secure it then he deserves some cred.

Excuse me if I'm wrong but two or three quotes aren't enough proof in this matter. None of us know specifically what went down so none of us should make assumptions.

7 - I believe MS and Bungie are having huge problems.
I Bungie left because Microsoft likes to micro-manage. They wanted all Halo, all the time. Bungie wanted to do other things. You can't really blame either. Bungie got bored, MS was making a ton of money.

"By now, almost everyone knows about Microsoft's very unusual decision to not show Bungie's Halo game at E3 last week. "

Is that in reference to Halo Wars?
Isn't that project being undertaken by someone other than Bungie?

9 - Wonder why bungie
made Halo3 with Halo2 engine? Well a lot of effort and resource was put into it Halo2 graphics as u can imagine.

Its obvious they arent going to use the same graphics for next halo. Therefore, i conclude they'll make 2 halo games for every graphic engine.

Now its upto MS/Bungie whether to optimise a new graphic engine for this generations xbox which will overlap the next gen, or to wait and start afresh for next gen(2010).

Or maybe they'll stick with the same old graphics and release the next halo with 2 year span.

A lot of improvements were noticeable with Halo2, and earnt its rep. Halo3 is definitely outdated

I know that Bungie are still tied to Msoft legally in terms of developing games, but the spilt, now the recent events at E3 are all pointing to the inevitible, and that is Bungie developing a game for other platforms such as the Wii and PS3...eventually. Which is not a bad thing, the Halo franchise is still and always will be owned by Msoft, but game developers are now more artist then ever before, they want to make games that push the imgaination, that are innovative, games that are not bounded my money or deadlines. Giving them a clean slate will only make for better games.

11 - Viral Campaigns?!?!
I think that with all the viral campaigns and things that Bungie is usually involved in...it is sort of hard to take things to seriously. This has serve to keep Bungie/Microsoft in the spot light way beyond E3.....and is forming to be the big story from E3.

wtf this is such a lame article! "it's complicated stage on facebook"? who wrote this? a middle schooler? sure companies will get angry if they don't get featured at e3, but considering how boring this last one was, I'd much rather have an exclusive event dedicated strictly to halo 4, and i think so, at this point, does bungie.

17 - Halo is to big for E3 is nothing but PR... BS
People can make all the excuses they want fanboys n all the bottom line is Bungi wanted to go independent for a reason you can t say M$ didn t make them rich because they did. But if you look at the decision that R* did with GTAIV to release to multi platform the same day which broke records world wide and knock Halo sales record out from #1 i think Bungi seen what that did and maybe is thinking of releasing a Halo title multi platform as well. And to the people who say Bungi wouldn t betray the fans is living in the same dream world that SE fans lived in because no 1 thought that would ever see the light of day. Games are costing more and more money everyday and to acually make a profit is this industry you have to sell alot of games just to break even let alone make a few bucks.. Bottom line is anything can happen nothing is imposible and everyone has a price $$$

17.1 - For the last time...
Bungie cannot make Halo multiplatform, Microsoft now owns the Halo IP (Intellectual Property). So again, Halo will not go multiplatform unless if Microsoft approves of it.

Now as for the article at hand, the main problem is that Don Mattrick won't shut his damn trap, and the fact that he's a former employee of EA explains this mess.

Also this is not news, it's a blog we've known all of this for days.

18 - This shouldn't be a big deal to 360 owners, but.....
This is very telling about Microsoft's attitude toward their consumers. They are more concerned with marketing and time schedules than throwing dedicated fans a bone. By reading this article, I can tell Ryan agrees with me. Though I think the author is making more of the situation than it really is.

19 - So now opinion pieces are
places to look for "complications" between Bungie and MSFT. Sorry, but if it is a game within the Halo franchise, then it is up to MSFT what o do with it, I am sure they payed plenty to make sure of it. I agree with what MSFT did in not showing it, because they had a good enough E3 and they dropped a bomb with FF13 announcement. Plus why not release this nugget closer to the release of GeOW2 so more people will be talking about the 360 and really just get more press for it.

If ff13 was a bomb dropping for 360 owners thats sad, while it is good news for rpg lovers on the 360, that they will be able to play ff13 on the 360 and thats it.

The only people that would consider that a bomb dropped, would be 360 fanboys rubbing it in the faces of ps3 fanboys. FF13 being ported to the 360 will not affect me looking forward to it in the slightest when it is released in the us for the ps3.

What this sounds like is microsoft and/or don mattrick dictating to bungie with an iron fist, any details regarding the display or release of information of the new halo game, despite bungies wishes.

There is a reason bungie decided to go independent of microsoft, part of it was probably a desire to work on others ips than halo, another reason might of been to break free of microsofts heavy handed management style.

Microsoft might own the halo ip, however even as a ps3 only owner, i don't think another dev would give it the same commitment that bungie does, i could be wrong on that though.
