Microsoft officially ends bid to buy Yahoo

Mercury News Reports: " The curtain appeared to come down Thursday on Silicon Valley's most popular business drama, as Microsoft Chairman Steve Ballmer confirmed that talks to acquire Yahoo have ended and a major shareholder advisory service said it was backing the Internet company's board.

"It didn't work out," Ballmer said during Microsoft's annual presentation to analysts. "Fine. We're done. We can move on."

RickMetrics Group, a subsidiary of ISS, one of the oldest and most influential advisory firms, endorsed Yahoo's board, which is up for re-election at the Aug. 1 annual meeting.

"It's basically game over," said Joseph Grundfest, a Stanford University law professor and co-director of the Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Center for Corporate Governance."

True that...

Plus I thought it a bad move on MS's part, at least right now at the moment given the economic troubles we're in at the moment..

Personally though I wanted to see Yahoo, stay Yahoo.

Word. After numerous attempts, they finally got that message. I think it was because Yahoo also started threaten them with a possible Google Merger.

I wouldn't count on it. EA got 8% of the stock in the first 4months and in just the last month they got another 7%, its obvious that shareholders are starting to sell as Take Two's own stock continues to fall.

All seriousness I don't think even MS could afford to buy Google, not that Google would even consider it. They own the internet as far as search goes. They've become synonymous with it..

Normally I'm pretty forgiving of forum grammar because it rarely interferes with the message being relayed, but holy hell Batman. I mean for the love of god take a whole 15 seconds to proof your post so that they are at least coherent.

10 - the ms hate is ridiculous
in any event this hurts yahoo more so than it hurts MSFT. Yahoo knows this and the only reason this deal didn't go through was because Jerry Yang wanted to pocket more money than msft was willing to give.

Don't expect yahoo to stick around too long, especially if google adds a music solution ala yahoo music. they are done and done again.

Google FTW.

google has alerday done what ms/yahoo can never do to the internet. at least 85% of people has google as there homepage including me google is the internet and m$/yahoo knows that is the truth its to bad that they could not do there search engine like google,i mean google page is just simple and different but ms/yahoo page is to cramped up with news no one really wants to hear.

12 - I never really understood why MS was going after Yahoo in the First place..
MS you are good at what you do and that is the Desktop. I understand SEARCH has become a big word in the industry looking at Google's Business model, it is very profitable.

I never really saw GOOGLE as the major threat some might claim they are but Google is not going anywhere unless it expands it business model. I'm not sure how you continue to make money off Clicks. There is no clear Business platform.

MS did the same with he Home Media Industry, with the Entertainments Division, which is doing a lot better then the MSN/News/search counterpart. They saw that there is money to be made so they might as well get a piece of that pie.

I really think the whole Internet search thing will die down and Google stocks will dwindle to normal heights.

MS should work at giving us a Great Enterprise Suites first. Leave Search alone.

16 - Old News
Microsoft withdrew their bid to buy Yahoo a long time ago.
This withdrawal was followed almost immediately by a jump in Microsoft's stock and a drop in Yahoo's stock, the drop in Yahoo's stock has not stopped, as it is currently much lower than the bid per share that Yahoo's CEO claimed ''underfalued the company.''

Yahoo's stubborness proved a good business move for Microsoft and a potentially fatal (Unless they do something different their stock will continue to fall) move for Yahoo.

Why do you people have this hate for Microsoft? They made an attempt to buy Yahoo to challenge Google's domination of the internet advertising market as a rebuke for Google attempting to challenge the Windows Mobile market with the Google Phone (not a physical phone, but an ad driven OS for smart phones). When Yahoo denied an very legitimate offer, they rethought their situation an opted to improve in house technology to challenge google. A very smart business move. Yes, they are out to make money, but this desire makes the entire industry more competitive which leads to a better environment for the consumer, you and me.

Also, those of you claiming that Google is untouchable or that Google is in a better position to buy Microsoft than visa versa, please, do a little research on the net worth of the companies. Google's stock growth is at an all time low (currently their stock is down more than a hundred points from its peak) And is much higher than Microsofts simply because Microsoft has split it's stock several times. A wise business move which Google probably should consider doing, as it does wonders in encouraging new investors to buy.

20 - People ask why the hate?
When is the last time MS did anything that didn't involve buying technology?
When was the last time they actually created something?
