Mortal Kombat 9 Planned As A Mature Return To Form
26
Kotaku @ Comic-Con: We sat down with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon tonight to chat about his latest project, Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe. Once again, we pestered Mr. Boon about the scrapped version of Mortal Kombat 8, once described by the long-term Midway dev as being heavily inspired by the look of Gears of War.
While that grittier, darker version of MK didn't make it far beyond the technology development stages - Boon told us there was little in the way of concept art for the grimier spin on the series - the next next Mortal Kombat may strive for more blood, more violence, more of everything that warrants an M-rating.

Really ? Mk's animation is usually off but this one is a stinker in that area .
Besides the DC universe online mmo looks even better ... i mean come on ... a mmo , an open game in the same universe got better graphics than your quite closed fighter ..

Nice to know. MK vs DC looks interesting. I was kind of disappointed in the direction they went, but I will probably rent it sense it is looking decent. I'll wait till MK 9 till I purchase another MK.

Funny. I still remember playing MK1 in the arcades. That was probably before most of you were born when you were all just shots in the dark seeping down your mothers leg.

6.2 - Well you may as well keep waiting, because they say this about every game in the series.
MK4 - Complete overhaul, grittier, added weapons. FAILURE
MK:DA Complete overhaul, added styles, grittier. FAILURE, alon with the rest of the trilogy.
MK vs DC...won't pass judgment on it yet, however I will say that it looks just as stiff as MK:DA, D,and A. There hasn't been fluidity in MK animations and collision detection since the 2D days oddly enough.
And yet again...before this next game even comes out, they're talking complete overhaul, return to form, BLAH BLAH BLAH.
I've heard it all before, and way too many times at that. The MK team is practically dead to me. MK Trilogy is the last decent MK game that hit shelves IMO.

SolidLiquidSnake, I'm with you. I'm also waiting for the DC game but that's not the real Kombat.
Genki, I have to disagree with you. I LOVED MK: DA and even MK: D was decent enough for me. Its still better than releasing 2 million different rehashes of the same game (Street Fighter 2 and its spin-offs / remakes / rehashes). MK team could have sticked to the UMK formula but they decided to try new things and many new gamers have become fans because of the games you said are failures. Armageddon was indeed a FAILURE but before that, I STRONGLY disagree with you. Sure, MK4 to MKD weren't MK2 good but they were great and I've enjoyed them more than any other modern fighter except for maybe, Soul Calibur and even then, NO game has the awesome characters and story of MK (Again, before the eff up that was MKA).
DirtyLary, Baraka will probably be in the real, M rated MK9 because you gotta admit, he is too dark and violent for a T rated MK vs DC.
Panthers, I actually have 8 now :(
Bubbles for you and hopefully, we both get our bubbles back :)

6.6 - What awesome characters are you talking about?
The VAST majority of MK's cast are throw-away placeholders and lame ideas. I think it's illustrated by Armaggeddons lineup. Can you honestly say you cared for characters like Jarek, Mavado, Tanya, Stryker, Kai, among others? I could go on for days, and many, MANY of those characters stories were ever fleshed out and forgotten after their whole SINGLE GAME appearances. It's evident that Boon himseld doesnt even give a crap about his new characters and their backstories, because far too many of them are irrelevant and fade away without a trace after a single appearance. It's as if he sticks new characters in games just for the sake of doing so.
Even character design went to sh*t after a while. Every character wears colored pants, has shin guards of some sort, some kind of flap that hangs below their crotch, a vest-type shirt, fore-arm guards, and boots.
The best characters in the series are the ones who have endured from the first 2 or 3 games, and even then, Liu Kang is the most hackneyed and boring protagonist next to Superman. Quite fitting that those two will be in a game together. Sub-Zero is probably my favorite game character, but like I said, there haven't been many compelling or interesting new faces since the third entry in the series. Even the bosses have all been lame.
In any case, as far as the game goes I didn't want them to stick to the UMK formula. As I said to another poster, I'm all about new things, new tech, and forward progress. I don't believe in constantly conjuring up the old, tried and true from the past, which is why I'm about fed up with annual sports games. Deadly Alliance was a valiant effort, I'll give you that much. It was a big step forward from the abortion that was MK:4, but my beef with the game was that it was too stiff, WAY too canned, and too restrictive. I felt like I was playing with robots.
The only good thing DA did was Scorpion...that was easily his best costume by far, and in fact probably the best ninja costume in a game, and this is coming from a Sub-Zero fanatic. At least as good as Hattori Hanzo from Samurai Spirits.
MK:D and A should have addressed these issues, but they used the exact same engine without refining it, they just added a gameplay gimmick here or there. (air kombat, WTF!?)
I hope this game will be better, but from the looks of things, I doubt it. The graphics are there, that's for sure, but as for the way it appears to play...stiff and robotic FTL, but hopefully we get a demo so I can see for myself.

I don't know. I liked almost everything in MKDA and D. From characters like Kenshi and Mavado to the new versions of Subby and Scorp. Plus, I had more fun playing them than most 3D fighters. I also liked their storys (Loved the death of Liu at the beginning of MKDA). D started good enough but the Shujinko and some others ruined it.
MKA is the only true failure.

I agree with you.......I am wondering if it is even possible for MK to return to form..........unless they are saying it is going back to its 2-D roots.

7.1 - That's exactly what I don't want.
Although IMO the best MK games were the 2D ones, I don't necessarily believe so solely because they were 2D.
I'm all about forward progress...but it has to be progress, and the series has been taking missteps ever since the fourth entry, what an embarrassment.
I want a 3d MK, but I want it to be fluid and believable in the movements, it needs to have collision detection as good as FNR3, but fits the fast paced action MK inherent to the franchise. Blood and gore, although a trademark of the series, is superficial to me. So long as it's done well, I can appreciate it.
I'm sick of stiff MK games with completely canned dial-a-combos and restrictive gameplay.

7.2 - With that being said...
I need the graphics from the 2-d MK. Ever since the series went 3-D the character models have just looked and felt touch much like cartoons. I remember that being the big thing that really stood out for me when MK was battling Street Fighter in the 90s.......MK had the realistic looking characters. I think if they can tone down the cartoon look and up the realism in character design.....it might also help the series....and perhaps bring back....umm, was it Tobias? or did he come back already...I have not really followed that side in a while.

They need to return to fast paced gameplay that allows you to just hit buttons and do cool things. I played Deception and Deadly Alliance. They were way too slow. MK II is what they should follow gameplay wise.
This is why I love the new Naruto game. You can just press mad buttons and cool stuff happens. I am not one for combos. Obviously the more skilled player should win, but button mashers should have their fun too.
