Microsoft refunding gamers for Windows Live

Ars Technica Reports: "To reward those gamers who have been with the service from the beginning, Microsoft will be giving refunds to gamers who have been subscribing to the Games for Windows Live service specifically. "Yes, there will be a benefit for customers who purchased gold subscriptions on Windows," said Unangst. "Proactively, we will be offering refunds for those with Windows-specific Gold subscriptions. Customer service has already begun to get communications prepared."

In addition, Microsoft plans to launch a Windows Live equivalent of the Xbox Live Marketplace. PC gamers will be able to access free and for-pay downloadable games, trailers, demos, and more. This will give developers and publishers a new outlet for content, leveraging Microsoft's reach, which will complement continued improvements of the Games for Windows Live APIs behind the scenes and the elimination of licensing fees for developers leveraging the platform or royalty fees for using the brand."

May not go well with the xbox live subscribers.

Same games, same everything. Except for free and provided by Microsoft.

That seems..wrong.

1.1 - You gotta love competition
Sony's gone so up and beyond by doing updates for free, running dedicated servers on first party games (60 players on Resistance 2), and giving quality PSN content. Now, MS is really starting to feel under pressure to make their service for free.

1.4 - PSN being free is great for PS3 owners but not for Sony..
"Sony's gone so up and beyond by doing updates for free, running dedicated servers on first party games (60 players on Resistance 2), and giving quality PSN content"

That's why Sony is still losing money on the PS3. Also why Home hasn't been released.. You can look at it as a benefit for the consumer because PSN is free for them but somebody still has to pay for to run those service, the engineers and programmers who work on the updates, bandwidth and everything else that is associated with the running of PSN..

So yes its free for PS3 owners but Sony still needs to pay the bills.. Who knows but if PSN was paid maybe Sony would've had the money to pay Square to keep FF 13 exclusive or any other game that was exclusive to the PS3 but went multi-plat or even became a 360 exclusive(Ace Combat).. They could've also hired more engineers and developers so that Home would've been out by now..

As a company that has won two generations I think Sony knows what they are doing. No one, especially you and I have any idea if Sony is really losing money. We also have no idea how much money Sony planned to lose in advance, how much was budgeted for a necessary loss that is part of the early stages of a hardware generation war. I think if Sony was worried we would see more signs of panic. But we don't. We see the opposite.

Sony is a lot more reserved than they were before the launch of the PS3. They seem to be taking everything in stride with a "It is just a matter of time" attitude. Those are not the actions of a company in trouble. So for everything that is printed, the zen principle of "you and your actions are one" indicates Sony is moving at a measured determined pace...and without worry.

MS on the other hand - and Games for Windows is an epic failure - are exhibiting the appearance of panic, of worry, of a company that knows their strategy is failing and they are now throwing the kitchen sink using the "Toss it on the wall and see what sticks" method.

"I think if Sony was worried we would see more signs of panic. But we don't. We see the opposite."

Right that's why they haven't done a price drop? Or tried making the hardware cheaper by taking away backward compability and changing out different hardwares or sell their company assets to try and stay afloat... right.. There was an article here a couple weeks ago saying how Sony still loses money for every PS3 console sold.. I'm pretty sure you can find it if you search for it..

Yeah that's why they quickly dropping the price of the 360 huh? $100 price drop for a console that's been in the market for 2.5 years isn't as bad as a $100 price drop for a console that was only in a market for 6 months.. get facts straight buddy..
