Newell: "Go Ask Blizzard if PC Gaming is Dead"

Gabe Newell believes that PC gaming isn't dead–it's changing.

In an interview with Develop Magazine, Newell, co-founder of Valve, said that the PC gaming industry is evolving from a "ship-it-and-be-done" model [boxed retail] to an "entertainment service" platform.

"I mean, go ask [Blizzard president] Rob Pardo if PC gaming is dead – if he can take the time out from making money hats, I'm sure he'll give you a really eloquent explanation of why probably the most valuable entertainment franchise of the moment is PC-specific," Newell said.

The only reason I think PC gaming is not dead
is because of MMOs.

I mean why would I spend 300 bucks everytime a new Nvidia card comes out just so that I could play my favorite games and spend more than 10 bucks a month because of monthly fees?

PC gaming isn't dead but I hope it dies.

Exactly why would you buy a new graphics card everytime a new game comes out. Oh that's right you don't have too, or if you do have too then you are doing something very very very wrong.

Saying you have to buy a new video card every time it comes out shows just how ignorant of PC gaming you are. You talk about how "cheaP" your console is. But if you factor the cost of a TV (even a non-HDTV), your consoles price, and batteries and recharge kit your "cheaper" console cost less than it did for me to build my gaming rig.

And the only thing being killed off is the console. Your console has done nothing but mimic PC gaming for two generations now. You have down-loadable updates, expansion packs, you have installs, you even have game crashes and internet browsers!!

The SINGLE BIGGEST REASON you like console gaming so much is the fact it MORE LIKE A PC now than ever.

Think about it. The PC is not dead or dying. Your console is evolving into a PC!!

Factoring in the cost of a TV for console ownership is a ridiculously flawed argument. How many households do you think that are in the market for a current generation games console don't already have a TV?

As someone said already, do you know anyone who does not have a TV? You probably have one too. And by the way, even if you don't want an HDTV you have to buy one since CRTs are almost impossible to find these days. So adding the cost of a TV is pointless.

As for the battery chargers and batteries, I never had that problem with a PS3.

Also, who cares if consoles are becoming more like PCs, with installs, etc? That was never the point and you know that very well, it just happens that you don't have more arguments to throw around.

Newel is a fun guy. The only argument that I hear about the healthy state of PC gaming is WoW. Let me give you some more, Newel:

Crytek giving up on PC exclusives. Epic developing Unreal Engine 4 primarily for consoles. Far Cry 2 going multiplatform after beying a PC exclusive (in fact most footage nowadays from the game is actually Xbox footage, not even PC; they know where the sales are going to be). CD Project developing The Witcher for consoles. GSC becoming a Xbox authorized developer and bringing the STALKER franchise to consoles. Dragon Age coming to consoles in one form or another. Heck, even a aircraft simulator like IL-2 Sturmovik is coming to consoles!!! Who would have dreamed that 5 years ago? Oh, and Operation Flashpoint 2 too!
Do I need to say more, Newell? Why did you guys at Valve even bother doing lousy console ports if the PC market is so good? Just do like Blizzard and keep WoW as a PC exclusive then! Hypocrite.

Do you actually think that any publisher/deveoper in his right mind is going to develop PC exclusive games that cost 50 million dollars to develop plus millions in advertisement just to sell 1.5 million copies when they can sell 4 million in multiplatform? PC gaming is the place for MMOs and RTS games or, if you like it, the place to play Poker and Mahjong on-line. Games are rising exponentially in deveopment costs and 1.5 million sales don't cut it anymore. PC gaming in terms of big budget productions is just an appendice to the console market and it will continue to be so. FPS, action-adventure, RPGs, etc, are the domain of consoles now. No one develops solely for PC anymore unless its a MMO or RTS.

It's coming to the point where if you're not an unhackable MMO then you're not going to make money. Casual PC gaming is booming, but other aspects such as popular hardcore games are getting the short end because honestly there's no longer strong incentive to pay $50 for a 10 hour PC game that's probably going to look like crap on your two year old computer.

I have to say that Valve got one thing right and that was to use an engine that played well on older hardware. If this formula is used on new games than it would probably drop dev costs and cut down on piracy because games become affordable again.

Other than that, Blizzard is unsuccessful in the sense that they have not been making games and being progressive. WoW was a lucky break cash-cow, but does still have it's problems.

PC gamers/developers can be really annoying sometimes, they come across as really elitist. 'Haha! You should just upgrade your PC so you can play all the latest games! Whats the matter? are you too POOR?' Ugh. Not all of us want to spend stupid amounts of money every year on games.

Will Wright gets it right at least, don't ask for ridiculously high specs for each game and then people will buy it.

Appologies. This is not the article I originally thought and is indeed a new one!

I guess the reason I reported this as a duplicate is because he says the same old tired rubbish he says in every interview he's ever done.

The fact of the matter is that games revenue is increasing enourmously every year, but overall revenue from PC games is shrinking. Its slice of the pie is getting ever smaller, and a lot of previously PC only developers are moving into the console market to get a slice of the pie.

The fact that one or two companies like Valve and Blizzard can still make a very healthy profit, does not tell the whole story, and even valve have had to allow console ports to ensure they get decent returns on their IPs.

Pc's are no longer the place where you find innovative new games targetted at all the demographics. How many PC titles did you hear about at E3? How many amazing PC games have we got to look forward to this year? I'm genuinely not sure - but theres obviously a lot less in that market than there is in the console market.

The thing is, PC gaming is turning more into free games with ads or free games with item stores. PC gaming still has more people playing every day than any of the consoles. Yeah, big companies can't ship out massive amounts of software, but there's still plenty of money to be made in the free game formula. Just look at stuff like Maplestory.

PC gaming is not dying; its changing. Its no longer the place for big budget production titles; instead, its the place for Poker/Majhong on-line. The only genres that will survive as exclusives are MMOs and RTSs. No one will ever spend 50 million dollars in deveopment plus millions in promotion (and rising) in a PC exclusive anymore to just sell 1.5 million copies when they can sell mulitple times that on consoles alone (Crysis, remember?). Where are those grandiose AAA first person shooters that were once the pride of PC gaming? They are on consoles now. RPGs? The same. This trend will only continue.

Well according to Valves business's model all they really have is Steam so if PC gaming goes so do they along with it. Making a game every so many years isn't going to cut it in this days market.

Is PC gaming dead? no..well not yet. Why do Blizzard make money? well maybe its because they are one of the very few developers out there who release a product that is not broken from the moment you open the box. Blizzard have a great history of releasing quality games that have been supported well, Warcraft III had a new patch only a few months ago - the game was released 6 years ago!

To be fair Valve have done a pretty good job too but two developers do not make a platform. More and more PC developers are now going multi platform even some of the genre's held most dear by PC gamers such as flight sims and racing sims are now making the move to the console format with games such as RACE Pro and IL-2: Birds of Prey.

More and more PC only gaming friends I have now own a console too, fed up of being fed a diet of poorly optimized, poorly coded games that require several patches and never run quite the way they should. PC gamers are treated like thieves by the PC developers with their draconian copy protection that takes the pirates no time at all to circumvent.

Perhaps if PC developers spent less time bumping their gums about the format not dying and spent more time setting up a certification scheme like Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo run to ensure quality then they could spend more time eating doughnuts and less time trying to defend a format they have had a hand in destroying.

There is an exception to every rule, if I say something someone can counter it with atleast one point, seriously PCs are doomed for games, atleast for attracting a large base now. MMOs obviously however the single player exp is dying fast on PCs, C&C3 type games are slowly moving to consoles more quickly etc. With mice and cams and keyboards on consoles, they day of the PC is ending and the strictly game machine is taking over. Hes a PC Developer first and foremost, of course he wont tell you "Im loosing my job slowly but surely" come on now, plus to me he is ignorant always has been. Nothing new with him

20 - Decline of PC gaming is bad news for everyone
PC gaming dying ? Well sort of. Unfortunately there's a lot of issues that undermine the PC gaming market and fuel the console success. That's really sad as I prefer the PC as a gaming platform but there's no point in living in denial.

But the demise of PC gaming is bad news for everyone, not for PC gamers only. Because the decline of PC gaming and PC exclusives is parallel by the decline of the hardware market. Just look at AMD, they're basically dying. Of course there's a lot of reasons to the actual situation of AMD but fact is their stock has plummeted since the merging with ATI. Indeed if they can't merge with another company from the semi-conductor industry like Samsung they're doomed. And the deserved succes of the latest Radeon cards change nothing, absolutely nothing to their difficulties.
As for Nvidia, since they make big bucks from the enthusiast market they will have a hard time if PC gaming is only made of WOW, the Sims and casual stuff. The recent plunge of their stock due to the unsuccess of their GTX cards is just a proof. Analysts are skeptical about how Nvidia could grow. Nvidia try to get into new markets with their great GPGPU approach (way better than CTM) but that won't help much. Almost two third of their profit is made from their medium-end/high-end graphics cards and their high-end mobos. And a lot of these cards are bought by PC gamers/hardcore enthusiasts.
People have to understand that the R&D for hardware is increasing with every generation of GPU and that it's becoming harder to come up with a innovative and robust architecture. In the end the present situation means that the cost of developing new GPU for consoles will cost way more money than it does with the PS360 consoles and that's not good news.

And the "true" hardcore gaming is also declining. It seems nowadays that great but overly simple games like COD4, ME or BioShock are getting all the attention. I missed the days of Fallout 1&2, Deus Ex, OP or Tribes 2. At least there's Clear Sky, DOW2, Warhead and ArmA 2.

Say what you will to defend PC Gaming, but I enjoy playing games on my 46" samsung instead.

However, I still have a PC with an 8800GTS that's capable of doing 1080p for gears of war and other games.

PC Gaming isn't "dead" it's just not that alive and kicking either.

However, things could change again once Starcraft II comes out. I for the life of me cant wait for that one. Blizzard, you guys and your 2 year teasers.

22 - Well
The only reason that i quit PC gaming is because back in 2004 I shelled out more than $1,500 for a new PC with relatively powerful graphic card and new processor and stuff. Well over a year I enjoy a great deal of PC gaming experience.

Then in late 2006, I found that my PC cant handle the current gen PC games anymore (not in good configuration anyway) and I notice that the only viable way to put my PC up to par again is to shell another $800 for the top end graphic card and another $200 for additional ram (it cost that much then)

Well I after the calculation, I realize that $300-$400 console is the way, since I'm sure that my $400 investment will last at least 5 years.

Pc gaming won't die out, it simply needs to evolve the same as everything else. PC's are the home of good RTS games (Starcraft etc), simulations (Simcity, sims) and of course MMO's (do I really need to give an example).
I play on a medium spec PC and happily play all games I want, I do own consoles and they also get used.
The main problem with the PC gaming industry is piracy, but even that is not causing it to completely collaspe.

On a side note, why is Gabe Newell so annoying. Everything he seems to say get ups some ones nose.

Ive been playing D2 again since the D3 announcement... Ive been sitting at my PC for hours and I WISH I could sit on my couch and play it on my big screen in high def glory. I dont like being stuck in a computer chair at a desk.

Thats just one reason I love consoles... I know I can go DVI to HDMI, but its more trouble then it is worth. Plus who wants to upgrade every 3 months for $1000+ to be up to date. PC gaming still has its place, but that is only because those games worth playing on PC arent made for consoles and they COULD be. M/KB is possible on consoles now, so they have no excuse. The fan base will be there... especially if they only have to pay $400.00 tops for a system to play the game.

25 - You're stupid. Duh.
They're the biggest success on the PC market. Strategy games and Muh-Morpuh-Gahs thrive the PCs existence [and Sims]. FPS; they thrive, but they don't conquer. Because FPS games aren't casual. Strategy Games, MMORPGs, The Sims, everyone plays those. If you have a group of friends that play a MMORPG, you play it. If you have mind you'll play Civ. And if you have a life with friends in the real world you play WoW [I did not mean actual MMORPGs, not as many people play the majority of those as apposed to WoW. Lets note I don't play any MMORPGs anymore, and haven't since I was twelve.]

26 - Tail
The thing with PC gaming is it has an enormous tail. It's not much use saying 'Crysis has only sold 1.5 million!'. The game has only been out 6 months. If it's supported, as more patches and mods come out, and as high end becomes mid end etc it'll continue selling if the market takes to it. The question mark will come this time next year. If it's a hit it'll have sold another 1-1.5 million, and then continue on the year after that..

If you do a quick search on Wikipedia and around the net you'll see this holds for all A-AAA PC games. Age of Empires 3? It's sold over two million, but a quarter of those were in it's third year. Civilization 4? Sold one and half million first year, then another one and a half second. Come back this time next year it'll likely be over four.

Guild Wars - an MMO, but without subs - over five million last count. The Sims 2, over thirteen million. Half Life 2, over four million in its first two years, and probably at half that again in the past two years with legacy sales and the Orange Box PC.

Then you've got billions of dollars being made in MMO sub based games - plus literally millions of boxed copies.

Lot's of little upstarts - eg Stardock - selling hundreds of thousands yearly (Galactic Civ 2, Sins Solar Empire) of their titles.

I think factoring Direct Downloads, lifetime box and online sales where support is kept up, MMO subs, the PC market is doing fine. Certain genres and publishers have gotten ahead of themselves if they're expecting multi-million numbers in tiny windows - and part of the fetish for high spec fps of a decade ago is just plain gone on the PC - They'd honestly be better chasing the console market (which is naturally front end loaded, and less tired of the fps thing), but with a solid product, and a comittment to keeping it on the market for the long term, there isn't much to worry about in PC sales.

NCsoft will tell you that. Valve will tell you that. Blizzard will tell you that - all their products are still in and out of the top ten/twenty, with 8 million plus of each. Stardock will tell you that. Hell, i'd say the makers of Stalker - given it's their first game - would be quite pleased with their two million and rising sales, regardless what they can top that up with on consoles (and good luck to them - if a port 'll grab some extra cash, why not do it?; The Sims even is all over consoles - i struggle to figure how that's an indictment of the PC versions sales, being the highest selling game of all time by a wide margin. Where there's a buck there's a buck.)
