Real Exclusives Raise Bar: Sony PS3 vs Xbox 360

Product Review's Daniel writes:

Recently on the MTV's multiplayer blog we read a few comments Peter Dille, Vice President, Sony Computer Entertainment of America made about exclusives and how they affect the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 sales.

What's interesting is the view Peter Dille has on exclusives that then become non-exclusive and the real exclusive games.

One game that comes to mind is Final Fantasy XIII, this was going to be a Sony PS3 exclusive and then Microsoft open their wallet wide to get FFXIII on the Xbox 360. This will bring sales to both games systems.

I personally don't see a FF13 as a mover of systems, that title belongs to Halos, Metal Gears/God of Wars, and Marios/Zeldas.

FF13 is a system seller, it sells a LOT of consoles in Japan (FFX release = 1 million PS2 sales straight away). Also it would have been a system seller in EU and US aswell (to a lesser extent). But now that it is multi, it won't really sell consoles for either system in EU and US, unless the PS3 version of FFXIII comes out first.

The Biggest system sellers are exclusives to the next gen
Halo 3 moved a lot of 360's because the previous two were on the orginal xbox
MGS4 moved a lot of systems because the previous one's were on PS1 and PS2.

Looking forward there are some other huge titles that will make their next gen debut that will move a lot of systems.

Crash Bandicoot
Kingdom Hearts

The first year that Madden isn't offered on PS2 will move a lot of systems as well.

on the 360 will have is it will prevent extra PS3 sales to go along with the release of FF13. If MGS4 can sell an extra 200,000 ps3's imagine how many more FF13 exclusive would have sold. This move just evens the playing field for both companies.

good point marine life, i bought a PS3 precisely for those games, i wanted Shadow of the collossus sequel, Kingdom Hearts sequel, God of War, and GT5.

and you hit it on the nail with Madden.
i liked the ps2 versions of the game over the 360s, the control scheme is the same that ive been playing for years now. its just more fun for me, and cheaper

Although, not doubt I think Sony has the exclusives edge, but that is mostly due to 1st party titles. I am curious and don't really no which developer works for who so, can some please post PS3 & 360 exclusives that are 3rd party. I think it would be an interesting angle to view this subject from.

The thing about "rela exclusives" & original IPs is there are no guarantees they will sell & gain a fan base or become franchises. Most of Sonys "Original IP & Exclusives" have not gotten real good outcomes. They are a gamble. Sure its good to have but success is whats important

5 - i am a really big 360 fan....

.....but i can see that the PS3 really is starting to hit its stride and it is all about the exclusives this generation, and while Microsoft has made tremendous ground on sony by gathering great titles from them and making them appear on their system too (final fantasy, resident evil, devil may cry etc) Sony really has such a massive first party line up that is truely incredible and will be hard to compete with. It really is good that microsoft are in this generation pushing things forward, makes the games better on all systems. Developers are really starting to push gaming now. Resistance 2 looks fantastic, every time i see it, the scale is just incredible. Gears 2 again looks amazing with the graphical fidelity and textures on characters and environments that are really impressive. Then the recently announced MAG, wtf 256 players online, pretty incredible. Gaming will just keep getting better and better for everyone as long as there is always strong competition that makes the developers want to push the limits of gaming. Sorry for the rant.

but, I think this will work in Sony's favor. Sony has more 1st party devs, and as such, more exclusives potentially.

Yes, Micro does have deep pockets, however, Micro will not spend all that money only on their gaming division. Micro does have other wars to be fought. What with their Windows/Vista, MSN, Zune, etc. So they can't/won't buy every game for exclusivity. Exclusive DLC is as far as they will go. And with more and more 3rd party game's going multi, it's the 1st party games where it will go down.

My humble opinion of course, please feel free to disagree.

I will disagree. Microsoft will spend any amount of money to try and beat Sony. That is all they want. If someone told them the only way to beat Sony is to spend 20 billion dollars, I do believe they would consider it very highly.

People shouldn't really count all their games as potential successes. We have to face the fact that alot of games won't see great sales!

Bulletwitch was a title a few people were looking out for, but hit as a dud. ICO for ps2 was a great game in my opinion, but didn't sell over 50,000 unit's world wide if i'm correct.

Basically what i'm saying is alot of games may be great to you... but to everyone else, they may look like a waste of time!

Prime example... Boom blox is considered to be a good game, but alot of people who own a Wii are scared to buy a new IP. You have a few who will take the gamble, but the majority will stay away!

The same problem is happening with the 360 and PS3 as well!

when Microsoft first jumped into the games industry the had to buy some developers so they could have exclusive games. Now i now about gears and fable but it seem to me that a lot of effort has been put into bring existing exclusive and or franchises over to the xbox. which is grate because when the developer makes the jump it will be a lot easier to keep them on your platform as mutiplatform developers . Sony had a big head start with exclusives because they dived into the games industry before Microsoft did. and all Microsoft are doing is catching up in a way (FF13). i feel it is now time to for Microsoft to start expanding the 1st party developers. its a rant i no. reply and maybe u will be able to make me understand wat iv just written.

I agree but what I don't understand is they don't have any and are simply not activly doing anything to get them.

But, when people say he doesn't make sense I don't see what they mean. You can clearly see his point is as followed.

Having a real game exclusive is more important than having DLC for a multiplatform game exclusive. Simple really and if people were more open minded they'd probably be able to see how easily his words are to comprehend, then again Kotaku is one of the 1st sites to run this story originally so being stupid is a prerequisite to the site.

I'd rather have a full on exclusive game like MGS4 and Uncharted, R&C, Resistance, Killzone and so forth and so on than DLC for GTA4 which sucks so bad it's not worth the 30 dollar price tag the DLC is going to carry.

I havent put a disagree as i can only go from my experience. I have 4 360 exclusives sitting at home (Gears, Halo3, Saints Row, Crackdown) and only 2 for the PS3 (uncharted, MGS4), so i think the 360 has better exclusives out now.

before articles like this will be long gone. By next year I can assure you that SONY's massive span of worldwide 1st party developers will be pushing out groundbreaking titles again and again. MGS4, Resistance 2, and KZ2 are only a taste of the new age of gaming that's to begin. It's not often 3rd part developers will make comments such as these, but I recall one major dev stating that by 09 you will be able to look at a screenshot or preview and tell "that is a PS3 game." Rest assured, this is true.

I haven't really had a wow moment on a 360 yet.
The only games that promising on the 360 that have delivered is Alan Wake the rest are just rushed and overhyped.
Only 2 exclusives have flopped on the PS3 (Haze and Lair) but out of all the 360 exclusives that have come and gone 80% have failed to live up to the hype or have been ground breaking.
I have nothing against the 360 until I see some amazing games I'll change my opinion about the 360 but until now it just didn't click for me.
The only games to me that were remotely impressive to me on the 360 were the following.
ex.) Gears of War 1 & 2, Bioshock, and Mass Effect
Now the only thing that remains on the 360 catching my appeal is Gears of War.
I don't want to spend money on a console to only get 2 good games.
-Bioshock is coming to the PS3 w/ better graphics, trophies, and exclusive DLC not found on either the 360 or PC. Pretty much confirmed that Bioshock 2 is gonna be multiplatform.
-Mass Effect is coming to the PS3 in 2009 plus it's already rumored that Mass Effect 2 might just be multiplatform.
I now have no more reasons to get a 360 anymore cuz all those games are coming to the PS3 and have been improved.
