The Ultimate Proof Sony Is Winning

Jane Wells of CNBC Writes:

"Forget the analysts. Forget the NPD sales figures. Forget the CEO's. I live with the ultimate expert on the video game industry-my 16-year-old son.

He not only plays video games, he watches every show about them on G4, he participates in chat rooms about them on the internet, he competes in a variety of games on a variety of platforms. He always tells me the latest trend three months before I read about it in the media.

But he's never been a PlayStation fan. Sure, he had a PS1, but as soon as the Xbox came out, it was game over. He loved the Xbox graphics, and once he was old enough to play "Halo," he loved the games. He graduated to the Xbox 360, Xbox Live, "Gears of War," etc. He even hung in there during the overheating Xbox "red ring of death" phase. Other than a two-year detour/obsession playing "World of Warcraft" on his computer, he has always been an Xbox fanboy. Sony just didn't have great games."

Think about it for a moment, the consoles werent released at the same time, in fact, a year apart. if you were to put them side by side (released same day) the playstation 3 would be in the lead. not only that but is microsoft counting RRoD'd 360s in their 'shipped' figures? 19 million minus 33% equals 12 million 730 thousand units shipped if they are including it in their figures

There are too many outside forces in that equation to matter. If they had released side by side it may be different, but it probably wouldn't. The 360 prepared the market for the next generation. Developers had an extra year to get used to making next gen games, the consumer market got to experience the next generation through 360, and advertising and marketing was shaped by this change.
If they had been released side by side, the 360 may have still come out ahead because of it's lower price points (also, Gears of War may have even launched WITH it). We all know the 360 failure rate, but if they came out at the same time, that extra year may have worked out the RROD problem.
The bottom line is, Microsoft made a good move (hardware problems aside) by releasing their console a year early. Whether side by side the PS3 would have come out ahead doesn't even matter, because the whole situation would/could have been different. The 360 is currently ahead of the PS3, and that's just the way things are.
Plus, it's their sales figures. If they included all the replacement 360s they sent out, then they'd be closer to 30 million. So... yeah.

Also, that article was really stupid. "My son saw a terrible press conference and switched allegiances because he is a fan of waiting for something to happen that may or may not. My poor, poor son."
The ultimate proof? OR! The ultimate.... spoof?

In this instance, she's referring to the fact that her son previously didn't like Playstation, didn't play any of the awesome PS2 games that came around, and STILL traded in his 360 for a PS3 because of what he saw on E3, which was INCREDIBLY underwhelming.

She's saying that if such a thing became a trend, where Sony could underperform yet still entice because even that lack of a quality showing is still better than the competition, then Sony is the ultimate winner for being able to attract people, even former haters, when they aren't even trying to.

Did you not read the beginning of the article where it says "Forget numbers"? I guess you didn't, otherwise your comment wouldn't exist.

Also, about your first/last physics (and I will even bring ACTUAL physics into this); it is possible for a photon to be in two places at the same time, and so, if a photon and say... a neutron were in a race, the photon could be first and last, assuming that the photon moved directly in one place, and indirectly at the other. Note, this is not two photons, nor one photon splitting into two. It is one photon, in two places.

Seriously, the 360's tenuous hold to second place is about 5.5 million worldwide, less than what they sold in their first year with no next-gen competition. The PS3 outsold the 360 by 1.4 million consoles from Jan 08 till the end of June. You do the math. If everything were to stay the same and Sony's momentum doesn't continue to pick up steam the 360's lead is gone at this rate in early 2010. If momentum does continue the PS3 will overtake the 360 next year sometime. Sony is gunning for 150 million PS3's sold during it's lifespan. It's clear the race has only just begun.

wrong, if the 360 was released a year later after fixing the overheating issues, disc scratching issues, the infamous 'being a microsoft product' issue it would actually be a better console than the ps3, the 360 is only a money maker, it uses the same software, same developing tools as windows (durr) so technically its a computer with a controller that cant use a keyboard or mouse and yet it crashes just as much as its desktop brother known as Windows PC(Piece of Crap?) . the playstation 3 is technically still a console because it brings new technology unlike the 360 which brings last gens computer technology in a new vertical position(WOW!)

Even if the 360 was released in a bundle it would not save the console from epic suckage(now yours for only $300)
Plus on the closer to 30 million part.. no, they 'refurbish' the RRoD'd 360s and send them back to you(or in the case for some places in europe that sell them as new..) so why would it take them an extra year to come out with better games for it? and where are all these games now? its a computer, where are the games for the computer? nowhere, so if there are no games for a PC there are no games for the 360. period.

now im too tired to really think about what i wrote so please inform me on anything i missed in my rant

yes, the 360 is a good console, if it wasnt for the fact that its main priority is to make money, not make the customer happy

DON'T underestimate Resistance 2. The first resistance was just about as good as gears and halo 3 and it was a LAUNCH TITLE. Gears of war could NEVER come close to the amazing creativity that the weapons in resistance have(especially after you beat the game once). Insomniac is arguably the best developer around. You just wait until they are both released and see what happens.

It's hard to compare sales of MGS4 with the first Gears, since Gears was a new IP and MGS4 comes from a highly established series. It would be alot more credible to make the comparison to the next Gears. Besides, if you're talking just overall sales, Halo3 has over 8 million, Gears over 7.5 million. As far as ratings, the're both within 0.5 or less on almost all game sites. MGS4 is a fantastic game, but it does'nt and won't "own" the big guns on the 360. Besides it's one of the only games worth playing on the PS3 since they currently have a game library worse than any major console in the past 10 years.

I'm so sick and tired of people saying that the ps3's library sucks. I own 15 ps3 games, and i enjoy all of them. Uncharted, Resistance, R&C, Folklore, GT5 prolouge, RR7, MGS4. These are all fun exclusive games. I hope that by the time resistance 2, uncharted 2, Gt5, FF13/versus, white knight story, dark cloud 3, god of war 3, FF7 remake, Little big planet ETC comes out for the ps3 that people WILL STFU!!!

Gears was 5.29 million in sales on the 360 alone. Again, it was a new IP which makes it a little tougher to compare to an established franchise. That said MGS3 only sold 3.99 million on a system that has sold over 120 million units. It almost matched the original MGS which sold 5.59 million, and the original MGS was a masterpiece that set the tone for the current one and the other sequels. To say MGS4 is "owning" Gears is just plain idiotic. Also, MGS4 came out at an odd time of the year when there really is no competition like there is during holiday season. People are fiending for good games at this time of the year. The real argument will kick in when you can compare each games sales over a 3 month or so period. Gears is going to wreck MGS4's sales figures when the dust settles. Oh, and I went to gamespot, Gears rated a 9.6. Once you reach mid-9's or higher, it's obvious that the reviewer feels the game is great 9.5-10.0 is not much of a difference.

I guess some players would rather have quantity over quality, and that's fine. I prefer quality myself. Smaller games on the console are far more tactical and allow for better co-op. Add to that in games like Gears, you don't respawn which increases the tension. Even great FPS's like COD4 prove the point. Most people I know can't stand ground-war. They prefer the 12 total or less games because the big games turn into a clusterf**k. I don't care if PS3 comes out with 1000 vs 1000, numbers alone don't equal better game experience. If I wanted to play massive FPS games, I would do it right and buy a PC. Consoles just can't pull off games like Planetside or Anarchy online like a PC and their superior servers. The online game I'm looking most forward to this year is Left 4 Dead, and that consists of only a 4 man team. Again, if anyone prefers or wants to brag about quantity, God bless'em because I for one am all about quality.
