New 80GB PS3: limited USB connectivity

Product Reviews writes: "On our recent post about the new PlayTV, one of our readers asked if the new announced 80gb Sony PS3 will have rear USB slots as the current 40gb model doesn't have any at the rear. They did not want the PlayTV sticking out at the front of the Playstation 3, after a little research we cannot confirm if they will be back or front, but it does not look good from what we read on Stuff.

The 80GB will come with the same feature set as the pared down model. So limited USB connectivity and no backwards compatibility with PS2 games. If that's true then we could expect nearly everything to be the same, including the USB ports. This will affect buyer's decisions when looking at the PlayTV.

1 - So?
Quit your whining! Just do what I do with my external HDD and move the cord around the back of the PS3, only having the plug come around the front to the port itself.

People will find any and all means necessary to b1tch about the PS3!

having a usb showing at the front of the ps3 will hinder peoples choice at getting a freeview where you can record programes foe free and the choice of harddrive is purrely dependant on the owner of the ps3.

what a lame article buy a usb adapter if its that much of a worry lol

This article is fricking stupid. NONE of the PS3 models have USB in the rear. My 60Gigger has 4 in the front. Good enough for me, but apparently I have a USB limited model.

1.4 - So? IT LOOKS CRAP!
I have a 60gb PS3 had from just after launch (uk) Sony made a big mistake not having at least 2 usb ports at back for this and the PS Eye like they said the PS3 would have.
I don't mind have controllers plug in to charge but if you buy Play Tv
having a usb cable at the front LOOKS NAFF!
I have my Ps3 under my Plasma, system has no cables visible between TV,SAT BOX,DVD Recorder,PS3 or Surround system so having Play Tv cable plugged into front of PS3 would spoil the look!

1.6 - The point is no rear USB, not number.
It was a boneheaded decision to put only USB ports in front knowing you want to sell a USB tuner/PVR (play TV). I want PlayTV in US, but I won't get one and have a fixed box and coax cable (from) HD antenna in front of my PS3 in the home theatre. I'm not going to wrap a USB cable around the back either. If I'm going to accept a mess I might as well just stick with Xbox.

It was boneheaded and I hope theyy fix it. A contoured hardshell wrap around adapter that's flush with the PS3 casing would do nicely.

Hmm top idea man. I work in a welding factory and have access to this bendy aluminium laminate stuff. Might see what i can cook up.

And id expect the usb ports to be added to the back when they revise the sku shape. USB ports on the back would probably require a major motherboard redesign would it not?

Why not offset your ps3 a little further back than your tv? Then you don't see bending cables everywhere and it'll look just as fine as if you were playing rockband...

If you turn your nose up at the fact of having a USB plug showing your really going to be missing out. PlayTV gives UK residents excellent value for money.

While it is actually something I considered when first seeing PlayTV it isn't something that would put me off a purchase. I'll be buying it.

.... buy for £100 from ASDA (UK)a twin tuner freeview box with a 160gb hard drive without the need to use the PS3!
No rear usb was a mistake not a deal breaker but a mistake mind you not as bad as seperate power block,hd dvd drive & wi-fi that i saw somewhere LOL.

Well, it was announced that this newer 80GB model would have the "same functionality as the 40GB PS3", so basically that means:

No PS2 Compatibility
2 USB Ports
No Flash Card Readers

I don't know why it's so hard for some people to comprehend. Basically this new 80GB model is nothing but a 40GB PS3 with a 80GB hard drive and that's it.

I could care less about the PS3 not having USB ports in the rear though.

Exactly what I was going to say.

And USB hubs aren't expensive...I got one for my 360 for next to nothing. Ditto USB card readers, if you need one.

What mystifies me is the lack of backwards compatibility...unless the oft-rumored PS2 downloads on PS3 come to pass. That could be a part of the reason behind the increase in HD space.

I think they increased the HD because with the 40Gig it would be 20Gig smaller then the now new 60Gig 360 for $50 less. Now, its more value again. And Reefs once mentioned the 40Gig costs effectively the same as the 40Gigs.

If they are really worried about space (see new movie store) and the DVR, they would sell anything below 160Gigs (or at least offer a version with a 160+Gig drive).

complant of the century "i dont want the tele box view-free sticking out of my ps3. i dont care if it lets me record tv with no subscription. its a dealbreaker"

ever heard of putting it behind the ps3? the USB connector is what, an inch? god this petty stuff is really grating with me now.
id buy it if it was a 2 foot box. its a great deal for me. i just need to sort my tv aerial out to plug into it!

Yeah...I had not heard about it until this article. Apparantly it is a nice little black box that allows you to record television (including hd) through your ps3. It has a program guide and does not call for a subscription to any service. And it has been confirmed that you can record tv while playing video games. Also because it has two tuners you can record while watching another channel...and you have the ability to pause live it. And with all that said.....it is currently not on its way to the US....sucks!

yep, and its not coming to the US because of the way digital tv signals are aired, in Europe they're aired using the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) standards while the US uses ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) standards.. i would guess they might make a new one for the US with ATSC standards!!

Wow, can you tell yet, the haters are running out of things to hate?
Talk about clutching at straws.

What exactly is "limitted USB connectivity"? Is the USB signal not quite making it through. Or is that just some BS that means 4 is a bigger number than 2?

Hey, I admit. I'd love 2USB's on the fron and 2 on the back, but its hardly anything to affect a buying decission. I cant believe some people thing this is and issue but RRoD isn't.

And no matter which way you look at it, it either more storage for the same price or a price drop for a couple irrelivent features. Either way is BETTER.

I agree. There is nothing "limited" about the USB connectivity on the PS3 other than the number of ports themselves. Four would be nice but there is nothing wrong with two ports only. And the 360 only has two free ports if you use their ridiculously overpriced wireless adapter.

This really is a non-issue.

Crazy how Sony gives you 40gb more space and a Dualshock 3. People will complain about other stupid stuff.

However, I think Sony is extremely confusing the consumer base. They should just stick with one damn SKU and that should be the 80gb with alllll the features bundled with MGS4. And if not just MGS4, bundle it with God of War III. Or whatever big hit game coming out at the time.

agree with you guys.

everyone gave MS stick for not having full backwards compatibility...

now that sony are not supporting it, you hear all this " we don't care " and " who needs it.... "

why the double standard ? Sony said all models would be fully Back compat.. now we going to let them off the hook.

well, i am just glad i got a 60 gig when i did. people go on about how worried they are about RROD, i will be honest, I pray more that nothing happens to my 60 gig ps3 then i do my 360. Anything happens to that i can get the exact same model again, anything happen to my ps3 chances of getting another 60gig, not so good.

anyway, i know this is all off topic. yes i think it would have been nice to have one at the back. sure you can so oh it does not matter.. i suppose it does not, but they took the time and effort to make the front look so flush why spoil it.

Not sure if it will really "affect buyer's decisions", but it is constantly occupying 1 of the 2 USB slots on the 40GB and new 80GB models. This leaves only 1 slot free for everything else (charging, EyeToy, ... ). With constantly connected accessories, such as PlayTV and EyeToy, having rear USB ports would be a good idea.

Thankfully you can easily plug in any USB hub to the PS3 and the problem is solved (there are a couple discrete and aesthetically appealing ones), though I suppose additional ports on the back would mean prettier cable management.

16.1 - Is it possible...
that I'm actually getting a better deal by having purchased the launch 60gb PS3 rather than waiting for these other sku's? I have all the backward compatibility I could want. Maybe I mistakenly thought that new versions of something should improve upon the previous. I guess the one main drawback for me was having to get a dual shock 3.

The only people bothered about the front USB ports are those who hate having wires hanging from the front of the console.

<hides head in shame, and wishes for a solitary USB port on back of my PS3> :)

How this would be a deal breaker is beyond me though. People really are grasping at straws when they try and argue that 2 front USB ports are going to stop people buying a PS3 and PlayTV!

My 60GB PS3 has 4 USB ports, my 360 only has 3!! My goodness is the 360 EVEN MORE limited than the PS3 when it comes ot the red hot topic of USB functionality!!!! What a joke!

21 - I think people are missing the point.
Does it suck having an extra cord hanging out the front? Yeah. Is it a deal breaker? No.

What is irritating people more and more is how the PS3 looses functions with every SKU. Typically when you make new revisions, it is to make the hardware better and hopefully cheaper. This is the first time I can remember a manufacturer taking functions away. Obviously this is going to anger many of the fans. What blows my mind is the SDF that cheers as every function is taken away. It's a very strange thing to watch.

22 - I'm sure it has been established but...
This article is rubbish. Why? Simple. None of the PS3's have USB ports in the back. Not even the best of the PS3's, the 60gb model had USB ports in the back. They all have them in the front.

Tip for those that complain about this:

Buy a USB hub and snake the cord to the back. I know I for one would have loved to see them put a USP port int he back but guess what? They didn't and they aren't going to change that anytime soon so quit your complaining.
