Unreal engine 3 with perfect 10

The guys at PCGH show some Unreal engine 3 powered screenshots (in fact UT3) which might give you a clue why the Epic engine is so widespread these days.

1 - I AM SO TIRED OF THE UNREAL ENGINE
its soo old,you can tell when a game uses it but i guess its better for pc type architecture, doesnt work so well with ps3, but the engines built from the ground up on ps3 are amazing like the mgs4,uncharted and killzone engine bit more work needed granted but the results speak for themselves

yeah, after looking at them i was not impressed at all.... when UTIII came out on ps3, i definitely liked it but it wasn't breathtaking.... they should have had the UE4 ready by now, they are going to miss out for quite a while until that does come out!

...don't concern yourself with any game built on it then. Easy! No one is forcing you to digest it. Your are doing it of your own free will.

The reason UE3 is so popular with 360 developers is it pretty much only good for putting out those silly marketing shots because of its overuse of normal maps everywhere.

UE3 one trick is basically uses normal maps to simulate geometric detail with texture level effects. You take a very high poly mesh and then massively reduce as much detail as you can down onto the flat texture surfaces. So 360 usually end up using very high detail versions of their characters and world in the fake marketing shots that 360 fans go nuts over.

But when it comes to the real game the actual characters and world are massively downgraded to be able to run on the 360 hardware. So you end up with characters that look kind of similar to the fake marketing shots but they all have that blurry low rez feel to them since all that real geometric detail is gone and is just being faked.

Another problem with overly relying on normal maps like UE3 does is all of your character models end up with the same types of shapes - like the 'bald space marine' complaints people are so sick of seeing in UE3 games. When you are faking geometric detail with normal maps you can't really have geometry sticking to far out from the main surfaces - otherwise the outline of the character would be distorted when the high detail polys are baked into the normal maps. So you end up with the same types of broad uniform curvature surfaces.

UE3 is here to stay for the life of the 360. It is the only engine that allows 360 developers and fans to pretend the 360 is in the same graphical league as the PS3.

"when UTIII came out on ps3, i definitely liked it but it wasn't breathtaking"

That is the problem Epic has with the UE3 based Gears of War 2. They got away with putting out nothing but the fake bullshots for their game because the gaming press really wanted something to get rid of the Xbox 1.5 label.

Now that everyone has seen just how mediocre UE3 actually is in realtime and not marketing shots Gears of War 2 actually ends up looking like a massive downgrade from the bullshots Epic so carefully made sure where all everyone saw of the first game.

You are right about normal mapping and the marketing screenshots vs the arctual games on UE3. So you are about some of the engine limitations that come to limite character design.

But I think you fail on assume this as the reason, the major cause, to all those look a like character design. This has so much more to do with going the cheap way and making what proven franshise has done and what you know will sell cause you see it everyday on TV, movies, internet and all... An this one is more of a cultural thing and has more to do with stereotypes...

Devs are just aiming to what they think will please the average western adolescent male, even if most times, they don't. And should be pretty obvious by now that this cheap way is ruining games, look at Gears Of War, people liked it, but the guys on UT drink on the same steroids even EARLIER and mostly no one cares.

Afterall this entire familiar characters is fruit of the error of devs thinking that some game will sell on America just for its visual. Just like transforming any idea of game in a FPS is lame, just as thinking the good looking woman can salve crap games... We got all those so many times now.

We have games that uses others engines and just have the oversized male on steroids of gears... So we have many games on UE that don't look like any of the UT universe... Better than that, look at mods, you really have much more freedom with the engine than that.

Making stuff shiny is very cheap to render. There are still quite a few Xbox fans who think 'bright lights on shiny surfaces' is the Holy Grail of computer graphics. They seem absolutely obsessed with those closeup shots of metal armor or face masks with massively bright lights reflecting off them.

So UE3 with its 'everything covered in plastic' feel is the perfect match 360 fans and why it just looks like just an outdated engine to PS3 and PC gamers. Real life isn't covered in plastic and massively more difficult to render.

But it is funny to 360 fans look at the most advanced rendering engine in Killzone 2 and talk about 'teh textures' - in other words 'hey, everything isn't covered in shiny plastic'. LOL, thank god.

"But it is funny to 360 fans look at the most advanced rendering engine in Killzone 2 and talk about 'teh textures' - in other words 'hey, everything isn't covered in shiny plastic'."

That my friend, is actually true to some extent. However to slightly counter that, the shiny cover plastic look can be good if used right. Gears of War comes to mind. I personally think without the sheen, the game wouldn't look as exciting with matte covered textures.

But yeah in other games where exaggerated realism is the target like Killzone 2. The matte textures, grim environment, and advanced physics really push that game to new heights in terms of overall visual presentation.

Which is why I'm dead stoked for Killzone 2.

7 - The point of the article
is that Unreal engine 3 is STILL useful as a graphics engine. Not that its too old and can't create graphically impressive games anymore. I don't really understand the demo if it wasn't for showing off purposes by Epic...however some of the shots weren't all that good. It looked like the UE3 was showing off certain aspects within certain shots. The characters sometimes looked blurry with poor textures.

Monster Madness... or whatever that demo was called. That game used UE3 and it was hella fun. Bob Dole wouldn't pay more than $20 for it though.

Kind of off topic: Are there any games on the Wii or PS2 that use UE3? Getting UE3 to work on the Wii would be awesome.

Seems like many unreal engine games are clunky and have this particular shine that you can tell. People need to make their own engine because the unreal engine is the average joe, nothing special.

9 - its getting old just like all engines do
its just because the unreal engine is used a lot why people are getting tired of seeing it just like the half life engine or whatever its called. Yes the engine used for killzone 2 and uncharted will age also but the reason they wont age as quick as the unreal engine is because they've not let others use it like epic have with theirs.

New engines must become old at some point and its nothing new at all

I'm so sick and tired of the Unreal Engine. Sure it can look great but it seems the only people that get it to look that good are Epic themselves. Not to mention that whenever you play a Unreal powered game you can tell its a Unreal game. You shouldn't be able to tell it should allow the Devs to make their game look distinct and different and the Unreal Engine fails horribly at that. Now sure there are some great games coming out using the Engine that look beautiful like Mirror's Edge and The Last Remnant but they are few and far between. Personally I liked the days when most devs built a engine from the ground up for their games as it made everything look different and not as much like a pack of clones.

14.2 - Agreed
I agree with you. I wonder why more devs don't build engines from the ground up. Maybe they don't really know how to?

I like how Quantic Dream made the "The Casting" tech demo in 3 months; and this 3 months includes building an engine, casting an actress, writing the script, etc.

I don't think I even have any games built on UE3 because of how many times I've played games using it at friends' houses.

I agree with your statement. But one thing to consider is cost. It would cost probably 2-3 times more trying to develope your own engine, plus developing the game itself.

So that's why company buy the license to use the Unreal Engine because it's the most developer friendly engine available.

Granted there are tons more Engines out there, but again. Cost. Perhaps other Licenses cost an arm and leg more than the UE.

So developers can sit down and either Buy an engine and just work on the game's story, audio, and other things. But obviously use the engine which looks similar to the other games. Or take out of their time and budget to make their own engine which isn't always successful.

It's a vicious cycle.

UT2 was the 2k series, UT 3 is above.

UE4 will be out for the next console generation, as i've said many times before the unreal engine is under constant improvement, it's not a static thing.

I don't know why people complain about it - without it the industry would suffer.
Nice list below from wikipedia, it spans everything from XBLA titles to MMOs. It's up to the devs to make things look different, not the engine itself.

UE4 won't even launch until the next consoles do, maybe a bit earlier for devs to get used to, since Epic said it's being designed with consoles in mind. But UE3 games do all look very similar, Too Human, Gears, even Bioshock are so close in design you would think they were all worked on by the same people with very slight differences in style
