E3 2008: Nintendo makes laughable attempt to please "core" gamers | GameCritics.com
40
GameCritics.com writes: "With all due respect to Mr. Fils Amie, when you trumpet Animal Crossing-a game about collecting furniture to decorate your house and writing letters to other cutesy animals in the town-as your shining example of what 'core' gamers are expecting, what we have is a failure to communicate."

I have much respect for Nintendo when they actually cared about gaming with NES and SNES, but after those 2 great consoles they fell off.

1.4 - who is going to buy their next console?
I know the Wii is very popular. But it is selling to casual gamers not hardcore gamers. do casual gamers know that consoles change every 4- 6 years. And will the hardcore Nintendo fans still be around to to buy their next system at launch price or to even start the word of mouth about the system. Casual means that the people that are buying the wii are doing so for quick and easy play does that translate into a Nintendo legacy or a one generational fad?

5 - While I understand what the Wii is doing,
I don't really care much for the system. One of the topics that continues to crop up with Wii owners (and you can see it in the posts at the bottom of the article), is that game-play always trumps graphics.
I disagree. And this is my major point of contention against the Wii. I think that both graphics and game-play are important. And why not have both elements? (i.e. Bioshock, Drake's Fortune, Metroid Prime - an example from each system, so that everyone is happy :) I also think that we often forget (especially those that own the Wii), that video games are BY DEFINITION, a visual medium.
A certain amount of graphical flair and polish is expected, no is necessary for immersion in a game. Even the Wii is capable - graphically - of much more than it is currently used for. To undermine this aspect of video games is to take a step backwards in my opinion. It frustrates me further, that Nintendo endorses this belief on one hand (graphics don't matter, it's all about fun, publish your crappy bratz, petz, party compiliations on our systems), and then puts out their own products, which are significantly more polished and refined.
What happened to the "Nintendo Seal of Quality"? Anyone remember that? Sure there are ugly shovel-ware games on all systems, but foremost on the Wii.
As far as Animal Crossing Wii being "hardcore", well I guess we have to redefine the term then. It's about as hardcore as this:
http://kotaku.com/5026587/w...
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,
- C

" What happened to the "Nintendo Seal of Quality"?"
I really hate it when people use this lame argument.
Did it help when it was there? 2 generations, did "core"gamers got lots of games? Ps1 and PS2 had loads of trash too and that with out any seal of quality.
"but foremost on the Wii. "
Even if there is a good game people like you tend to ignore it.
No wonder you think there is allot on the Wii.

5.2 - Nintendo's Seal of Quality
is only a guarantee that the game will work correctly with the system. It has nothing to do with the quality of the game. All Nintendo systems since the NES had games of various quality. Taboo: The Sixth Sense? It wasn't even a game!

It was the "core" that got all the other AC games, so no wonder they call it HARDCORE.
These negative articles about Nintendo is getting tiresome, same happend to Sony with their GIANT ENEMY CRAB or REALTIME WEAPON CHANGE.
seriously the next article is going to say the same over and over untill its not interesting at all( to me that right now XD)

I can tolerate fanboys (most of the time), but a fanboy of your caliber? I can't stand it. Nintendo keeps slapping you in the face, and you keep saying, "More! MORE!" Animal Crossing was never core. It was as casual as anything. My dad played it. My girlfriend plays it. My girlfriend's 6 year old niece plays it. Just because it was casual doesn't mean it's a bad game. It's definitely something that both hardcore and casual gamers can enjoy, but you need to stop fooling yourself into believing that this is a Nintendo core title, just so you can trick yourself into thinking that Nintendo still cares about you.
Also, the new Animal Crossing won't exactly be refreshing. There was very little change from Animal Crossing on the Gamecube to Animal Crossing DS. I imagine I'll pick it up, but I am not sure how long it will take until I grow tired of the game again.

Smacktard,
I never got AC =)
And im seriously not going to miss out the games Nintendo delivers, this goes for any company i dont care what they do, they deliver games that i really want.
I'm a fanboy alright, a fanboy of games.
" but you need to stop fooling yourself into believing that this is a Nintendo core title, just so you can trick yourself into thinking that Nintendo still cares about you.
"
I would not even care if nintendo FALLS and starts making games only, seriously No company gave a sh/t about consumers.
I'm just getting tired of all these hate articles, really they keep on coming and its all about the same thing.
Its useless.
Edit: btw a big portion of the "core" gamers of nintendo Did indeed got AC. Nintendo wasnt so popular with "casual" people with the n64/GCN. MAybe now on the DS but not back then and maybe thats why nintendo says its hardcore?
edit:Edit:
you dont have to convince me how AC is going to be its not my type of game anyway.

7 - seal of quality
yes, the seal of quality was good as it ensured a certain degree of quality control, but it also stopped a lot of games coming out on the console. do you think games like bully, manhunt, no more heroes and mad world would ever have got on the wii if nintendo didn't change their attitude?
ok, there is shovelware, just don't buy it.

I was actually thinking about Mad World right now. It surprised me that Reggie didn't mention that for the core gamer.
I know why he didn't show it at the press conference though, and that's because he didn't want to upset the (grand)mothers and little kids.

8 - Why all the Hate to Nintendo
Its not like they are not a Business.
They saw an opportunity to expand their business to other gamers.... sorry but had they stayed in the same market as Sony and MS they would be dead..... and this was apparent during the product life cycle of the cube... It was not that IT was bad... but it was not really competitive vs the competition.
Yes I personally don't like that Nintendo has swayed away.... but I don't hate them.. Its not like there is not an alternative to gaming.
This is why their are bigger flame fanboy wars between ms and sony crowd..... because it is direct competition.

I don't like when people use the "they're just a business trying to make money!" attitude.
Let me tell you a little story... back when Pepsi had the majority share in the soft drink business, Coke thought it was a good idea to change their product. Make it more appealing to consumers, so to speak. Thus was secretly born New Coke. Many taste tests were done with a very large number of people, and it found that the majority of people preferred the taste of New Coke to that of "Old Coke" and Pepsi. Eventually, Coke replaced Old Coke with New Coke, which tasted better! Therefore more people would buy it! And while sales did go up 8%, not everything worked out as planned.
The most dedicated Coca-Cola fans, a small minority, voiced their outrage with the change of product. They held public protests, boycotts, This small group is essentially what got Coke to change their product back to the "Old Coke".
So you see, businesses just trying to make money are fine. But when they start to piss off the hardcore fans, they better watch out.

14 - Who is the core gamer now?
People seem to be under the assumption that gamers who grew up on the Metroids, the Zelda's, and the Super Mario games are still Nintendo's core audience. Since the DS and the Wii have come out, I believe that the core gamer has shifted to those who buy the Animal Crossing's and Wii Plays. A game like Wii Music is exactly the type of game the new core gamer wants and Nintendo is happy to give it to them.
The old Nintendo core gamer has dwindled to a niche market. Yeah, Zelda is coming but Shigeru Miyamoto has already stated that the new game will be presented in such a way that the casual gamer will enjoy playing.

19 - Nintendo didnt show more of their "core games"
The Conduit, Star Wars Clone Wars, Star Wars TFU, Wario Land Shake it, COD World at war, Animal Crossing, Mad World, Naruto CONR2, Grand Theft Auto, Tales of Symphonia DOTNW, and Castlevania Judgement were all at the show. Just not all of them were at the press conference. Kid Icaris, Punch-Out, Fatal Frame 4, and Monster Hunter 3 were no shows. The core games are there. Yes Nintendo could of highlighted them more but really its the casual players who need to have info pressed at them. Reps from the USA Today and other mainstream press were at E3. They dont go to GDC, TGS, and other shows. At these other shows is where Nintendo will pull the curtains on games like Kid Icaris, Fatal Frame 4, Punch Out, and Monster Hunter 3. I can understand why some people are upset but really use your head and look at all the games I just mentioned. These are for the core gamer. Nintendo will be fine. And for the record games like Animal Crossing, Wii Sports Resort, and Wii music i'll be looking forward to playing. Plus we got voice chat and wii motion plus. 1:1 controls. Zelda in 09+ wii motion plus= bada$$

21 - well
what i heard from screwattack or spike-tv over at gametrailers they said that they have talked with Miyamoto ( or whatever his name is ), and that he said that they dont see E3 as a hardcore gaming show they saw it more like a show were you can reach out too everyone, they thought that GDC and some oyher gaming canvention are the hardcores show so HOPEFULLY well see some great gamess there...
And i would LOVE to see another mario or Zelda game as long as they keep up to the great quality that the former Zelda and Mario games has.
And wtf "another tired mario and Zelda game" did anyone think galaxy was "tired"? thats just stupid it got the game of the year award from most sites. And Zelda twilight princess also was a great game.
im not tryin to protect nintendo cause i too are MAD at them not showing anything great at E3 but what they said in that interview keeps my hopes up if they dont show any hardcore games at GDC im gonna bee truly dissapointed but i wont sell it, cause i dont need the money and who knows maybee at E3 2009/2010 they will show something great such as kid icarus, pikmin or f-zero and if i have sold my wii then i would have to buy another one as i am an old gamer and those games brings back so many memories!!! :D
Cheers!!!

1.1 - Starting?
It's been like that since N64 when they chose to use cartridges, and when they chose the Gamecube to be a purple lunchbox with a gimped optical media and a controller that was missing a left trigger. I loved those two consoles' exclusive games, but Nintendo dropped the ball, and IMHO they are dropping it much harder now with the core gamers, the ones they owe the fact that they survived the N64 and Gamecube eras.

uuuuuu.....the left analog stick was not enough? the xbox and GCN controller looked simular aside from the main button layout(ABXY START). And both did a decent job with games then a PS2 controller could do(Seriously if you think a FPS game is fun with a PS2 controller then you're just full of it)
