Joystiq E3 hands-on: Killzone 2

Joystiq writes: "How did Killzone come to carry such a burden? I asked myself this as I slogged through an early level in Killzone 2. PlayStation 2 wanted its "Spartan" and the original Killzone was called to task, failing miserably. And then, almost forgotten, Killzone emerged again through a dazzling display of smoke and mirrors at E3 2005. Three years later, we're inching ever closer to Killzone 2's release in February 2009. Now that the smoke is settling we wonder if a true "Halo killer" stands before us."

1 - I thought it was a pretty good hands-on
The controls have me a bit worried too. Just watching the videos I can almost see the frustration this guy is talking about.

One thing that surprised me was the positive feedback for the level design.

"There was a lot of space to move in. Not necessary space, but "real" space. While there was a linear path I had to travel to progress, there were many opportunities to explore and imagine the level as a virtual world, not just a string of corridors. This is great level design, and Guerrilla should be recognized for that."

Awesome. I'm curious to see what the other levels in KillZone 2 look like.

i think i figured how how come they are having a problem with the controls its because its a Sony controller it doesnt have that casual feel or the smell of cheap hardware to go with it.

i find it funny another preview stated how they loved the one button cover system that worked perfectly and now they are having numerous difficulties enough to make them write it.

also the framerate issue is puzzling as well: i've seen many gameplay videos and never noticed anything wrong and these are people actually playing.

To be honest this makes me think joystiq spent about 1 minuite playing the game and were to biased to give it a chance because it made the other games they have played on other systems look like crap.

bottomline: the game looks too good so joystiq had to find problems with it that nobody can prove.

WHY IS EVERY SITE DOWNGRADING THIS GAME? I WILL TELL YOU WHY!

Why is every thing Sony did at E3 under attack. Simple. MS and Nintendo have nothing to brag about whereas Sony brought games, a vision, and a plan of execution to the table. When you are the king everybody wants a piece of you. Right now they know that Sony is a waking juggernaut and they are worried. They should be.

1.5 - joystiq is talking about the controls like the guy in post #1
but these same sites/people never talk about the problems controlling that lumbering freight train called marcus fenix in gears and gears 2. i'm surprised marcus doesn't make a "beep, beep, beep" sound when he backs up.
come on, the biased attacks on sony games needs to let up.

lol. Great Example, and you're absolutely right about that. I thought Marcus was so clunky moving in gow1, I couldn't stand the multiplayer b/c of it. It had nothing to do with game pacing either... just how big his "polygons" bulk was lol.

Oh and whoever at Joystiq still wondering if this is a Halo Killer needs to get their brain removed from their ass, cuz that retarded statement is just unacceptable bias at this point.

I smell another Uncharted-like conspiracy that might hit this game. I remember how Drakes Fortune was reviewed, utter utter nonsense. I still think Sony should shut some of these journalists out, honestly, its getting to that point where they have these silly expectations and just dismiss anything that doesn't have a Halo name on it.

5.1 - I agree
But if they shut out some of the journalists and/or media like that, they'll get accused of "doctoring" reviews.

Just look at the gripe they gave Konami over metal gear.

But I agree with everything you said. I would say WHY I agree, but I don't want to add to the fanboy fire that usually comes along on this site.

you couldn't be more correct one of the best games this gen that i have played was given the cold shoulder for some reason i cant fathom.

remember all the FF is too old, not relavent, over milked, overrated and unoriginal articles? where are they now i just want to know somehow FF became the best game ever and the people who hated it now love it, i think the same would happen if Uncharted was multiplatform.

strange isn't it? I cant imagine what some people would say if Killzone 2 was a 360 exclusive.

What a pathetic pile of garbage.

Instead of giving gamers what they want to know about this amazing game the idiot of a 'journalist' goes off on this crap:

"carry such a burden"

"failing miserably"

true "Halo killer"

What an embarrassment.

The first Killzone sold over two million copies, and the PSP game is one of the best games on the system. Gamers deserve better from their gaming media.

If people want to read garbage like this they can find their way to teamxbox.com.

I know. How many times did he mention "Dom". And his complaint about the cover was that you couldn't pop out of it automatically looking down the sights.... like you can in guess what, Gears of War.

Go back to rubbing your face on your copies of Halo and Gears, dude.

9 - What the heck did Gears have ANYTHING to do with this game
What a horribly written preview... Seriously what the heck does Gears of War and DOM have anything to do with a PS3 Game thats a FPS!!!

Man people act like that game is god. Stop putting it in every preview, review, it makes you look dumb.

Nice try trying to downplay killzone though... Its missing that special "something", if you dont know what it is then just shut your trap about it, dolt!

I think he is just comparing the AI companion that you follow through levels and help out, as you did in Gears of War (That is, you'd only know if you played the game). I don't think he is directly comparing these two titles; he is more comparing the fact that you have someone guiding you through a level in both games.

Media is always poor, stuck in their ways.

France Proved U.F.O's Exist. With a killer 90page document.I've read it.

It's never been published outside of france, because the media in other countries just doesn't want to know.

Kinda of ironic. They want the big story, but won't print it.

was that the Cometa Report..?

anyway yeah, UFOs most likely do exist, so many mass sightings and credible witnesses (like former US president Jimmy Carter etc) all over the world. hell, there are ufo cases even in Iran! it's just a taboo subject to talk about, people like to laugh at things they are afraid of or don't understand... shame really, since ufos are like umm the biggest story ever? :) but we'll see, maybe they'll land on Times Square some day.

"The cover mechanic (mapped to the "crouch" command) worked and didn't (ie: it was frustrating that I couldn't pop up out of cover and use the zoomed weapon view)."

Umm I have seen many people use the cover mechanic and they were able to zoom their weapon from the cover position. I have not seen any slowdown anywhere, however, I am worried about the scripting of baddies. I too dont mind waves but 2 enemies at a time are pretty easy to knock down.

I must concede though that GG said this was playing on normal (although this wouldnt change the number of enemies) he also said the difficulty gets cranked up as you progress through the game.

15.1 - i noticed that too.
i've seen(countless times) people using the cover mechanic and accessing the zoom.
also, look at the gamersyde gameplay vids. they show enemies coming out of everywhere. and they can't come in "waves". this is urban combat on this level and the enemies have to pop out of all the destruction.

i don't see anything (from the video i saw) to be worried about. this game can't come soon enough.

only problem i had was there was some glitches(getting stuck to walls somethimes) and the engine they created was too much for ps2 hardware.
but the game was great fun. the mall and park levels, in particular were a lot of fun.

I'm going to ignore the framerate comment since I have yet to hear that complaint yet and he is being shown the same level you can watch in parts online, no framerate issues. As far as controls, chances are we will see customization.

Enemy number and wave balancing is what worried me, but there is time left, plenty actually. Sony will not let this game ship without a stable framerate and polished experience, the game means to much to the PS3 lineup.

The great thing about this "delay" is that they have EVERYTHING in this game already. They are in the final stages of alpha and are heading on to the beta. They STILL have 7 months until release. Thats fricking incredible, I am sure by the end of these 7 months the game will be increasingly balanced.

19 - LOL!
this guy is talking so much crap - geez its funny how hes refering to "DOM" from gears..i see we have a xbox lover reviewing a PS3 game..

that explains why he is downgrading this game.

If people say this is exactly the same as COD4 - then how could it suck? What because KZ2 doesnt do anything better - when does any new release have to do anything better to be great? if thats the case what the hell has gears 2 done soooooooo much better then gears one?? nothing

SONY is on top for years and at this rate after E3 it couldnt be more clear on what SONY has to offer now and whats coming..MS nintendo didnt have nothing...

when your on top everyone will always try to bring u down!.

KZ2 looks simply amazing and i can not wait to get my hands on it!

This is so predictable...
Typical Joystiq review of a PS game:

Reviewer: "So today we're going to review KZ2, did we mention Gears yet"?
"Not yet, but did you know Gears is the bestest game to ever come to a console"?
"I sure do know that". "Did you know if you buy Gears you can never get cancer or HIV"?
"I knew that all along".
"OK, back to our KZ review...."
"Right, KZ2 sux".
"Yeah, I agree, I tried to play this game but all I could see was Cliffy's belly button."
"Good review, that should get some hits".

joystiq?

REALLY?

the guys who, for the past two years, jizzed all over every bit of "bad" Playstation 3/Sony news, downplayed every quality PS3 title released during the console's first year (ie, Uncharted, Ratchet, etc), and are just an all around bunch of douchebags?

those guys didn't have anything positive to say about a Playstation 3?

NOOOO. you DON'T SAY...
