Jack Tretton "I bleed with every word that's written"

Following the Sony E3 08 press conference, Jack Tretton sat down for a one hour round table with bunch of reporters. The final question of the session was "Do you ever get nervous when you say something and you see all the keyboards light up at the same time?"

Jack says:
"...I bleed with every word that's written. You can't make everybody happy, not everyone is going to agree with you. I care about some unknown guy that responds to one of your blogs and trashes something I said..."

1 - Is Jack Tretton...
Emo? but i guess that he means well when he said that... he may mean that articles take things out of perspective and he hates it when that happens and that makes sense.

The E3 presentation this year was so slick and well put together then this sweaty loaf waddles out stumbling on his words. He just seems out of place. Not the smooth sophisticated image that Sony shoots for. To me he just doesn't embody "Sony". Phil Harrison and Kaz mop the floor with this guy.

Also I thought his opening joke about Jack Palance being dead was of really bad taste for the face of a huge corporation. It wasn't funny. Basically a douche chill moment. Plus young people most likely have no idea who he was talking about nor the moment Palance did the push up at the Oscars. I wish Sony would replace him. SCEA needs someone respectful like a Phil Harrison type.

Every public figure has bad things said about them. Especially high profile gaming industry executives that suck at presentations. Its part of your job. Man up Tretton!

I think Jack Tretton is the only PR guy that is not an ass like everyone else. Seriously that Don Mattrick guy was too smug, like Reggie from Nintendo. And that stupid old woman was just annoying in the Nintendo conference.

But we should have had Kaz introducing Riiiiidge Racer again, lol that was hilarious.

Yeah it kind of shows the human side a bit when every comment someone makes he reads and takes to heart.

Agreed. You cannot please everybody. For every one person that loves what you do there's another one that hates it. And these days, thanks to the internet, you get to hear both sides of the argument fanatically going at it. I can certainly understand Mr. Tretton's trepidation about making comments.

"really? i thought he did a great job this year..."

I agree...I was impressed with the way he handled the show...a world away from his humbling performance last year: So nervous it was as if he was speaking in front of a trigger-happy firing squad.

Well, in a way, I guess he was...except instead of guns, the squad had keyboards.

He won my respect with this year's performance.

5 - This is a guy who really cares for the gaming community
Sony made a good move making this guy SCEA head. Usually these ppl could care less but this guy is a dedicated person dedicated to his product probably one of the best heads in the gaming industry

I feel really bad for Jeff Rubenstein a lot of the time. He basically mans the PS Blog and the number of complaints over there is unbelievable, even when something good happens.

Tretton says a lot of stupid things though.

Edit: OMGF, he's the same guy who said "If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1200 bucks for it."

starting to get more and more respect for this guy. If only some of his humility rolled off on Peter Dile....

Dille is definitely Sony's worst PR guy, almost as bad as Greenburg or Kim.

9.2 - pirate, you must miss a lot of interviews
nobody, and i mean nobody could be worse than kim or greenburg. they just throw out hyperbole and outright lies everytime they speak.
you don't like sony. that's fine with me. but don't try and make up arguements like this.

and concerning your post at #8...it could be worse..... you could be the guy who has to listen to rrod complaints. now i reeeeally feel bad for that guy. coming up on 3 years and still ms hasn't fixed it.

Whoa... you think I don't like Sony?

It's actually quite the opposite, I'm a huge fan, it's Microsoft I can't stand.

Wow I respect him so much more after reading that. I really like his E3 presentations too, he's so nervous and at times awkward that I find it endearing. Keep up the good work Jack

I don't think he exudes that much confident as a speaker... but watching him at E3 I really got the impression that he's a humble guy. And while he perhaps could be up the excitement just a bit... it's such a nice change from what you usually see. There was very little gloating going on during Sony's press conference. They focused on the games and didn't feel the need to bring up and bash on the competition.

But that's not really what the topic's about. I just really think this guy is alot more respectable than many of the company representatives you see. He doesn't come across as some overconfident robot just waiting to forcefeed you BS.

To conclude... I just think he seems very genuine.

It's really all about the tone and behavior. I'm a technical core trainer at my job and I work with a lot of different people. I can tell their tone when they lie, tell the truth, when they're nervous, etc. etc.

Examining Jack Tretton, to me he seems very humble compared to others in this industry. You don't get any real sense of c*ckiness from the tone of his voice and his overall body language.

When you hear people like Shane Kim talk, you get the sense of over confidence. I know it's part of their job, but some humility would be nice. And Aaron Greenburg is the worst. HHG I know you think he's an alright guy, etc. But his PR Q&As are really childish.

He may not be the best public speaker but I'm sure thats a trait a lot of people can empathise with. There's a lot of kids out there who have never had to do any public speaking and won't understand the pressure and nerves when doing it especially in the media spotlight like he does and will jump on his every word. So what if he fluffs a few lines, it just shows he is human. I'd rather that than someone who may be slick and self assured but comes across like he couldn't care less about the product.

Jack is my favorite speaker. Not because he is the best, like the company he is representing, but because he seems human. He may not care about us at all, but he makes it seem like he does. Reggie cares ONLY about sales, and shoves it in our face. He has every right to do this because Nintendo has been struggling for the past two generations, and now they are dominating, but it frustrates me. Sony is giving off the overall image that they care about gamers this generation and are giving us more quality games than they ever have. The only thing they keep fumbling is the backwards compatibility issue, just give us a stinking BC model for $399 and the non-BC model for $299. But back on topic, put yourself in Jack's shoes. He is speaking for the company that used to be the market leader. There is so much hate right now for Sony, and he is the public representative for them. I would be terrified. Instead of blood, I would be losing internal organs if I tried to do what he does. :( So show some respect, do you honestly think the other speakers were as good as Jack at this year's e3?
