Miyamoto: 'E3 is No Longer for Showing Core Games'

Kombo Writes: "Love or hate him, Shigeru Miyamoto does know how to talk to people. After having one of the most disappointing E3 conferences in their history, Nintendo is still coming out with strong punches and sticks with their decision to reveal casual titles during their conference. Did Nintendo lose their minds temporarily? No, they made this decision based on the E3 media and he reassures us that hardcore games are in development.

During an interview with MSNBC, Shigeru Miyamoto talked about Nintendo's E3 conference, casual titles, and why Nintendo revealed what they did. Checkout a small excerpt from the interview below:

"I think that there's probably one other element to it, and that's that our view of how we use E3 has changed. For a very long time, E3 was an event where - and certainly Nintendo included - catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we're still working on many of those titles, but it's just not the type of event where we'll be showcasing that anymore."

lol, they are the ones that killed E3 with crap like Wii Fit and Music. E3 still is the best place for hardcore games. Fable 2, Fallout 3, InFamous, Mirror's Edge, Prince of Persia, Gears 2, Resistance 2 ROCKED at E3 while Nintendo FAILED.

The thing is that in a way he is right, and Nintendo has done this for a while. E3 was dieing way before WiiFit and all of that was introduced.

Nintendo has always used the TGS to showcase their core titles more than E3, or at least in the last few years. The reason for this is that the media involved with E3 includes many mainstream media and not just game bloggers/media. This is a perfect way for Nintendo to showcase their expanded software.

Think about how it worked last year:

E3:
WiiFit
Mario Kart Wii

TGS:
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Super Mario Galaxy
Monster Hunter 3 announced as Nintendo exclusive

This is really what they focused on in each respective game show.

I say wait until the Tokeo Game Show, and we'll see what is in their coffers for the core gamer.

Agreed. Most Epic Fail. What were they thinking saying E3 isn't for core gamers? Those core gamers they're taking about spent the last 3 dys glued to their computer screens watching E3 live. The internet almost exploded when MS announced FFXIII because of core gamers.
Meanwhile most casual gamers have never even heard of E3 and they wouldn't really care if they did.

Super Mario Galaxy was shown at N's conference last E3 and so was Metroid. Killzone 2 was finally revieled. Call of Duty 4 was unveild and blew people away. Fallout 3 was shown behind doors. BioShock shined. InFamous was announced.

Brainiac 8, why Fallout 3 was shown here for public in E3? Why FFXIII went multi here? Why the uber stunning gameplay of Prince of Persia was shown? Why InFamous gameplay was shown? Why God of War 3 teaser? Nintendo is the only one that has been casual focused and this year, MS went their direction a bit too but thirt party publishers won and showed the real stuff.

E3 is THE place to show real stuff. Sadly, Nintendo and casual craze are killing it.

I was mostly saying that Nintendo has started to take this route with E3, and of course, they went a little too far.

I do wish that MS wouldn't go that route, since their expertise is in different areas.

i dont like it when the term hardcore is aplied to games, because I think it depends on the way you play a game. For example ratchet and clank is hardly hardcore is it when you ignore skill points? Well thats my opinion anyway...

I guess they are simply doing what they are currently hot at makes sense to me. SONY showed a pre-rendered GOWar trailer why they do best is hype CG trailers just kidding. MS pretty much is just buying stuff in the console maker mall. Each company is doing what they do best and it really showed. Most hardcore this gen don't want nintendo games any way other wise they would have a system and still be playing it.

E3 is always going to be a sales recap for the press and some thing for the investment media guys.

I miss the old E3 that was a frat party LOL but hey there is no rule that they can't have private parties!

The Press gets the word out to the "casual"...why is it so hard to understand this?

Thats the whole problem the casual gamers do not go to E3 or look it up the Internet. It makes more sense that they read this stuff in the news paper or something like that.

The Press is their key of getting the word out.

Yahoo.com even declared Nintendo the least exciting, and isn't that casual?

6.1 - here here...
I have been telling my friends that the Wii is a joke and a ripoff since B4 launch. Anytime something different shows a NEW way of doing or playing something...the masses eat it up. The problem that Nintendo will have is the hoard will eventually get full and move on to something else. As long as the Wii is looked at like a toy (and Nintendo continues to treat it as such) and not a gaming console that is.

I heard so much about how arrogant Sony is/was. I said it then and I will say it now...NOONE I mean noone can be as arrogant as Nintendo was (NES,SNES,N64) and IS now. That display and the way that Nintendo is defending that travesty just shows once and for all...the Plumber does not CARE about the loyal gamers that stuck with the Crack during the lean years.

Shameful. I wondered if anything would bring Nintendo down from the "cannot do anything wrong and forgiven or overlooked on shortcomings" status...but after that disgrace...it appears more possible than impossible.

Cheers to MS and Kaapla to Sony on appealing to core gamers AND casual gamers.

Let's see, they had about an 80 min show, so they had nearly an hour left to talk about hardcore games. Why not talk about them and avoid all the negative backlash from the gaming world that you get for having a crappy E3? E3 for better or worse is the yearly mecca for gaming. It kicks off the buying season and gets the fan base excited for what is to come. That is what it has become whether it was intended to do that or not, so show your hand, get your fanbase excited, sit back and collect your holiday profits.

and Wiimusic.....sigh.....i dont even want to talk about this game. This forum doesnt allow the words i want to express about this game.

E3 is only for the Core Gamers, Casual gamers don't look up on websites about games or watch any of the streaming video of E3, so all nintendo is doing is alienating the core gamers more, and not getting their information out to who they want.

Seems to me that people failed to read this part:
"Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now"

Where does Miyamoto claim that casual gamers are the ones following E3?

Miyamoto (and Nintendo) knows that core gamers already know what's coming, therefore they focus on what needs attention: the other stuff.

Nintendo invented hardcore gaming WTF?!?!? A little part of me died when i read the headline. I love Miyamoto because i owe my childhood to him but come on dude dont turn your back on the people who made you what you are. I stuck with your punk arses through the 64 and the gamecube and this is how you repay me? The day e3 turns into a non-gamer event is the day i put down the sticks. God i wish gaming could go back to being underground.

It was an industry decision you would think the gaming media would have explain things a little better. When companies started ignoring this venue all together or better yet when E3 basicly said it was going to down size it self that's when this happened. When they decided to take all the fans boys out and just leave professionals. I remember every one said the Wii sucked and then people got to play it and wanted to get one peoples imagination where waken which is good. Not having 1:1 sucked though but it's here now and I know many will be happy about this in the dev community. It would be nice to see how long it took Ailive and nintendo to get it finalized though. With an upgrade in tools I think this may actually speed up development when reguards to motion controls.

Yeah E3 sucks though it puts consoles on the level of a car show but cards take up way more room. Another problem is each company has to now show their own stuff. I'm not sure what new rules popped up but I'm sure the CEOs know the reason for not even coming to the show.

The only people that still hype it is the video game news sites because E3 is a cash cow for page hits. That may become a problem though.

...he's right. Ever since they shut the doors on allowing real gamers to attend the event, there became little need to make sure that there was plenty to see and that those people were pleased with the offerings they had. They used to cater to that audience. Now that they (meaning us) can't get in, they cater to the media with "overall themes" and "directions the company wants to go in." So, save your big guns for the ones who will truly appreciate it and get the best kind of P.R. there is: Word of Mouth, which is the most effective, and FREE.

i believe he was not referring to the hardcore gamer who was streaming the live conferences. he meant that many none gamer related media was attending the show and those are the ones Nintendo depends on to spread the word about their new wii games. i'm talking CNN, BBC and the likes.

i'm sure you'll be seeing wii music on the 9'clock news and i'm positive no major network will break the headlines and announce that FF13 went mutisystem.

i'm a wii hater from the start but i have to admit that it's the first system in gaming history that gained so much attention from the media. it was in the oscars once!!!!! when was the last time a gaming console was there????

Ill agree with Gamerosity

Gaming isnt like it was before...to much attention is given to the video game industry now that it make more profit then movie studios.Casuals hear through newspapers,commercials,tv.etc. while real gamers hear through websites such as IGN.

Look at Nintendogs or Brain Age.I mean creative concepts but in the end casual games.Look at how much marketing there was for them and still are 3 years later. They sell like crazy because the exposure it gets. The marketing the publicity etc........

.....now look at Metroid Prime 3.....it didnt get any marketing.Even Ign poked fun at Nintendo for it.Did decent in sales but was one of the wii's best titles to date.
Gaming is just being taken over by the mass market.

You guys are pissed because you look up the internet for new games and such things. Nintendo knows this so they dont need to show it at E3, eventually they will announce some games and you people will know about it because you are looking for that kind of information.
Why do you need E3 for that?

19 - I play only games, not press conferences
I think the main thing that people should take away from this interview is that Nintendo is in fact developing core titles.

I didn't like Nintendo's press conference, but it's all the same as long as good games are released. Maybe I'll buy a Wii when there's big enough catalog for Wii.

E3 seems to be one big hype machine, and I'm not a fan of hyping. In fact, that's why I don't own a Wii.

i think most of you people are missing the point that even you keep bringing up, casuals dont look for games on the internet, they dont spend almost every minute of their lives commenting on every single story, on places like this one like some people here do, they rely on the media, the type of media that WAS at the conference(newspapers, etc)

Dont get me wrong, i hated that conference, it was probably one of the most boring hours of my life, but it makes complete sense for nintendo to do what they did, they dont need a big conference to anounce new hardcore games, because when they finally do, they can do it in a small hut in the middle of Antartica, that we would still know every word they said, thats the beauty of the internet.

So grow up people, and stop the hating, you have better ways to spend your time

I agree. But I don't understand why Reggie said that they did demo hardcore games ... like Animal Crossing.

Why wasn't he just straight with us like Miyamoto was? And say: "We have got hardcore games in development, we just don't show them at E3 anymore."

I like Miyamoto, he's a legend, but I didn't like this comment of his:

"So, looking at the recent history, I’d say that the DS and Wii together represent some of those very big changes, both on the handheld and the home console side. Based on past history, I would guess that we would see some refinement sometime in the next five to 10 years and then in another five to 10 years, you would see probably the next big evolution."

I hope by refinement he means a whopping great hardware increases and by big evolution he's talking about controllers.
