I think it's just the 40GB version with a large HDD. They should have kept the original 80GB and bundled in games while keeping the price at $500.
80GB original PS3
Dual Shock 3
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
Heavenly Sword
Motorstorm
Warhawk
$500.
These are all great games that are all rated "Teen". Sells for these games have fallen significantly since their debut so this would be a way to help their sales. This bundle would sell PS3's

No... no they didn't. Completely inaccurate.
They announced that the 40gb would be upgraded to an 80gb drive as a new sku. The 80gb presumably will be revamped to some other size with the full features.

Kholinar is right. The 40GB is being upgraded to the 80GB Core system. So, essentially the current 80GB sku is not getting a price cut. The new 80 GB sku will still be missing the backwards compatibility and the other features of the current 80GB sku vs. the current 40GB sku.

It's not a price cut on the 80gb model. It's a feature improvement on the same overall hardware as the current 40gb model. Yes, it's a better deal, but no, it's not a price cut because it's going to be a different sku. You're getting a better deal for your money, but if you called that a price cut in any country in the world you'd have a false-advertising suit on your hands. Price cut means less money for the same thing. This is the same money for something better, but not a price cut because that something better never existed previously.
"I wish you kids would pay more attention in school than here on N4G. I received my education and anyone else who did would see this as a GOOD thing. Wake the **** UP."
Apparently english class was pretty bad if you can't parse a sentence. The authors also agree with this evaluation.

12.2 - Actually, they didn't.
And they've made it very clear that the $299 price for the 20GB is a clearance. The other SKUs are the exact same price, with the 60GB replacing the 20GB for $349.
And Sony hasn't really dropped prices either. They're just eliminating the original 80GB PS3s and beefing up the Hard Drives in the current 40GBs. Every PS3 from September onwards will be $399.

Whenever that was announced I almost couldn't believe it.
People have been literally screaming for more 80GB PS3's and now that they can get it for $399, sales are going to go up because it's been in very high demand.
Those rumors about the 40GB PS3 being "replaced" were actually true and it's good news to hear. As long as they keep the Backwards compatibility with the 80GB, it's going to be a hit. Jack said that the 80GB PS3 at $399 will have the same features as the 40GB and that's making me think that it will have no Backwards compatibility, but I hope not.

I think knowing the 80GB was backwards compatible drove a lot of the sales for that model. This will just be the same 40GB PS3 upgraded to a 80GB drive, which is more storage but still no bc. So I'm not sure how consumers are going to react to that. I feel better and better about my 60GB PS3 every day!

Is it me or is this kind of dumb? People have been clamoring for the 60GB PS3 and to the lesser extent the 80GB PS3 due to the backwards compatibility. So they instead introduce an 80GB SKU with NO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY. In fact, some of the 60GB PS3 has gone for more than their original retail price. Way to respond to customers requests! Perhaps they added another 40GB due to the required game installs?
I must commend them for giving people more hard drive space, but I would rather they actually put it into something I can't upgrade myself and get the BC. PS2 has one of the best game libraries that I can remember and I can't touch them without buying a PS2 (more or less).
So now the only defining difference between this 80GB model and the one that is already out is mostly software emulated BC and a few more ports for a $100 more!

A few questions that need to be answered:
Will it have the backwards compatibility that the current 80GB model has? (If not, why not bring PS2 games to PSN for download, as has been rumored)
Will it still be bundled with a game? (Imagine it with LBP) Maybe a BR movie?
Any chances of a bundled headset or HD cables?
Will this be the only model from now on, or will there be another (the oft-rumored 120GB model)?
Will this force MS to actually cut the 360's price, instead of clearancing the 20GB model as a price drop? (That one mystifies me)
Any thoughts?

20 - the new 80G
is the old 40G model with an upgraded HD. no PS2 B/C, no card readers, and 2 USB ports.
For $399 it still compares favorably to a 60G 360 at $349.
Still i wish they came up with a pure software ps2 emulator that could run on ps3 hardware, but it seems as though its technically impossible. B/c still seems to be a sticking point with ps2 owners.

think back to when sony got all the praise for lowering the price on the 60gb. Then it was a month or so later that the real reason was revealed. An 80gbsku was coming out back at the regular price and everyone went all apesh!t over them doing that.
So now I dont know what to make of this. It is either the 40gb gets a hdd upgrade or the 80gb gets a hit to the specs with no bc. Either way the price is $399 which makes me wonder if sony will announce a newer $499 sku with 120gb or more hdd.
At least MS was up front saying they are making a 60gb for the same price as the current premiums. thus clearing out the 20gb premiums for $299. Nothing hidden there but I guess we will know more after September if whether or not there will be another $499 sku from Sony.
MS could drop the elite to $399 to compete as well as lower the 60 to $299. Maybe even drop the Arcade to $199 or keep it at $249 but include a 20gb drive as std. This is all just speculation for the coming months.
