Blu-Ray Xbox 360 Rumor (Once Again) Denied

Microsoft Entertainment & Devices Division President Robbie Bach told the San Francisco Chronicle that the highly-speculated Blu-ray enhanced Xbox 360 is still nothing more than a high-def dream.

"If you look at the Blu-ray player market, you haven't seen the acceleration everybody expected (since the demise of HD DVD). It's not as much about whether all the content is in a Blu-ray format or a HD DVD format. You have to look at how fundamentally compelling the difference is between a progressive scan DVD player and the picture that it can produce and what you get on a high-definition player. The reality is there is some difference, but most people look at it and say, 'I am not going to pay extra for that.'

There is nothing to even talk about [Blu-ray Xbox 360 plans] right now with regard to the next generation. That is so far out that there isn't anything to talk about."

Upscaled DVDs do look good. But Blu-Ray (heck even HD-DVD) are for those who want the most clearest, sharpest, and best looking picture available. Especially with bigger TV's. And not to mention uncompressed or True HD 7.1 audio.

Upscaled DVDs still have the problems of artifacts, video noise, and less accurate contrast.

These were the same guys who said that the HD DVD attachment was a success right? So they were saying, there were people who were paying extra for it. But since they lost, and their $199 product is now a $5 blue light special at K mart, their tune changed. I get it.

Funny how they mention a progressive scan dvd player in their comparison, since they know their xbox absolutely sucks as a dvd player.

Upscaling might be ok for a 32" LCD, but on my calibrated 1080p 50" plasma, upscaled dvd looks nothing like Blu-Ray. It's good enough for my girlfriend, who couldn't tell the difference when I changed her dvd player from composite to component cables, but for someone who is looking for that difference, you know, the actual market segment these things are targeting, there is a difference.

2 - Clearly ..
Xbox360 Does not need Blu-Ray...and (proven by sales and attach rate) is doing just fine without it...And with advancements in DVD Technology, their storage capacity should be near equal to Blu-Ray here shortly should Microsoft wish to go that route for future games ...simply put leave the Blu-Ray format for the Movie Buffs...No thank you Sony, I prefer to focus on VIDEO GAMES

I did not say Xbox NEEDs BLURAY... but to downright play SONY for having it is stright up jealousy no denying it. How is bluray a bad thing for sony, we are moving into an era of high definition and techonolgy rapidly increasing as we speak.. high def TV's , High def players, more possible chances of adopting more 7.1 media, faster internet ( we hope ), more Gigabyte consumption.. and thats just small examples... sony is just spearheading the techonology that they think will be the future.. and quite frankly i do too... so please stop being an xbot.

The Xbox360 as a gaming system may not need blu-ray. However, it's still an advantage for Sony just for having it.

Heck, this whole "blu-ray for xbox360" arguement doesn't seem to be about the actual product blu-ray. Looks to me more like bickering back and forth because Sony just happens to have the advantage.

5 - I bought the HD-DVD add on for £20...
I know I know there not making films for it anymore but it can upscale to 1080p and there is still a good back cataloge of films which is worth getting, but having watched one or two films there is a differnce to a normal DVD but not that much.

8 - I really dont care if it comes or not
I have a 24 inch SDTV so Blu Ray would do nothing for me except a little more extras for movies.I watch DVD's on my Xbox 360 all the time and its all I need to be honest. If theres any accessory im gonna pay over $150 for my 360 is a 120GB HDD but I dont need that either since I dont play online and I already have 20GB HDD.I bought a 360 mainly to play great games not to watch HD movies.Until HDTV's go down in prices DVD's is all I need.

9 - M$ needs to stop speaking for everybody
The consumer cannot tell much of a difference between Bluray and an upscaled dvd.
Please get off this way of thinking because you are dead wrong M$, you old cronies sure make me laugh with these statements.
Considering HD DVD lost and that is what you were backing I didn't hear upscale dvd is not far off HD DVD come out of your lips whilst the race was on in the format wars, blind freddy can see why you are now saying this.
I and anyone I have ever spoken to can tell the difference so I don't know what consumers you are referring to. A remastered movie at 1920x1080 at progressive scan is hands down better not just marginal !!! Alot of things come into play also, the codec being used and who is taking the time in the remaster of the content. The PS3 upscales DVD content and has had a lot of effiencies and features put in place to do the scaling, so I can tell you when I own the exact same movie on Bluray and DVD and compare upscaling on exactly the same TV it is leaps and bounds. I haven't mentioned sound compression on a DVD vs a Bluray. So please stop with the jokes they are getting really old and often a regurgitated from the last 2 years. To top this off whoever mentioned about the new technique for getting extra space on a DVD disc, well current DVD players wouldn't be able to read those discs so yeh that sounds like a great argument.
To end this PS3 has advantage of games being on Bluray not only movies, people are adopting it faster than DVD as there has been more Blurays sold since its been out than what DVD accomplished in the same time frame. So all points in this article proven to be more spin coming from people that don't know what they are talking about.

Don't fcking lie, MS.

There was enough of a difference between regular DVD and HDDVD for you to offer that, wasn't there?
But now, all of a sudden, DVD is good enough.
Fck off.

10.1 - Disagree?
Sure, you can disagree, but tell me what it is that you disagree with you coward.

Tell me, honestly...if HDDVD had "won", would MS be saying this? You bet you @rse they wouldn't. They'd be signing the praises of HD video.

But it's ok...I know you hit the disagree button because you feel like an idiot for falling for their cr@p when they supported Toshiba purely to try and spite BD. You'll get over it some day.

11 - Too late...
MS will have BR in their next console - they will tout the 200GB capacity, faster speed than the PS3 drive (because by the time the XB720 releases it should have a 4 or 8x BR drive).

But for this gen, and with MS console cycles being short, it would not make sense. Maybe an add-on for those who relly would like it - but then there will be a cry for a "trade-in" of the HD-DVD drive. So from all angles - it would not make sense for MS to concede that BR has taken the market until they are ready to release their next console.

XBox fanboys will try and downplay BR success and refer to it as "dead" - ironic - because HD-DVD died and they were very vocal about how HD-DVD was "better".

PS fanboys will love to see a BR in the XB360 - because that would give them something to crow about. But I really doubt if it will make sense now. If it was released December 2007, then it would have made sense, but MS was wishing aloud that Downloadable Content would kill BR. No such luck.

So both sides - the next XBox will have it, this gen will not. BR adoption is growing nicely, and no other format is going to challenge it as the successor to DVD. For MS it does not make sense this gen, and I agree. Not much harm done either way. If they really wanted to improve things on te XB360 side - then they should insist on the Hard Coating on the game DVD's.

15 - IMO
I think MS will go the way of the GameCube and first Playstation and go with it's own drive for games. Special DVD's with large capacity are out, and MS can use that while still supporting upscaled DVD and can focus on it's DD service. Blu-Ray is not the only option for games, some of you Sony hardcore need to see that. DVD tech is somthing devs all ready know and it's easy, and the parts to make it is real cheap.

Robbie Bach sounds like he is a little bit butthurt and wont admit that Microsoft lost to Sony in the High Def war and has to be content with just having High Def downloads because no one bought their crappy HD DVD add on.

Not unless there's another new-tech dvd type format that's going to show up anytime soon, I believe MS/XBox will be adopting Blu-Ray in the very near future.
It'll be the next default format and as I'ved said not unless...

20 - Really?
Are you all serious? Well, I guess if you own a PS3 then you must feel compelled to waste an extra $10-$15 per movie on Blu-Ray......For a slightly better viewing experience. Tell me, do all you PS3 owners creme your pants whenever you see Christian Bale in 1080p in Batman Begins? The movie is still just as good in 480i/p as it is in 1080p. Yea, go ahead and tell me that Microsoft doesn't know what they're talking about. It's not like they're one of the largest software (now also hardware) companies in the world and they ACTUALLY know what they're talking about. Yea, you fanboys under the age of 16 must know what you're talking about. What a joke.
