Reuters: Court order on YouTube user data fans privacy fears

Reuters writes: " A U.S. judge's order to Google Inc to turn over YouTube user data to Viacom Inc sparked an outcry on Thursday from privacy advocates in the midst of a legal showdown over video piracy.

Viacom, owner of movie studio Paramount and MTV Networks, requested the information as part of its $1 billion copyright infringement lawsuit against the popular online video service and its deep-pocketed parent, Google.

Judge Louis Stanton of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ordered Google on Tuesday to turn over as evidence a database with usernames of YouTube viewers, what videos they watched when, and users' computer addresses."

BS on Viacom's part, this is invasion of privacy and BS on the Judge's part for allowing this to happen.

1.1 - So, how does a judge in the US rule over European/Australian/Asian/African Users' data?
What the hell is up with America.

Way to go Viacom for shooting your own customers in the back of the head.
Don't they realize then when people share media on things like You Tube its like free advertising.
I could understand if it were whole films, but this is BS.

There is a lot of things wrong wit America and the rest of the world, but European and Asian viewers decided to visit an American owned site. That gives a US court the legal right to decide on court cases.

Because other users live in different part of the country doesn't mean you are immune to US law (although sometimes you do get extradited).

I'm not an expert though.

1.4 - whats funny is that...
It was solely because of YouTube that made Viacom's shows Massively popular, Daily show/colbert/south park ect~

so they lose Huge wads of Royalty Cash and this is the end result~

always new the "video such and such in red has been removed by order of Viacom" was going to end ugly.

2.1 - It is not a decision
It is part of discovery in a court trail and there is no room for appeal. They must do this unless they can get another judge to hear the case and that isn't likely.

Now on the count of three everyone leave Youtube and change your ISP's

3 - Wow...
So are they really serious about suing 98.48% of the population of the entire United States for "copyright violation" and put them to jail?

Bulls***. I never liked the media. I don't support Hollywood much anymore, since they can't seem to put out a movie that can't hold a candle to anything in the 80's, 90's and beyond.

Viacom is just a piece of crap media company. It's crap like this that will help forge the web 2.0. Data pricing, gouging, and privacy invasion. 2.0 will be very much about privacy since the net is getting more and more like a neighborhood, everyday.

Enjoys these days people, because later on, the real fight is going to be about our privacy. It's issues like this that keep my own thoughts about the issue, going. I have negative and pessimistic views about our privacy. I hate the fact that we are being controlled more and more everyday.

I don't know the details about the case, but it's moves like this this that will give us a glimpse at a bleak future for our privacy.

If they sue me for all the "illegal" things I've watched on youtube then I might as well commit suicide. As will 90% of other youtube users... That or get ready to work for viacom for the rest of your life to pay them back.

Fight for us google! It's the least you can do after we've all made you this rich.

Basically all these companies boughtout new and cutting edge tools that allow people to connect on a more widescale level. Facebook, Myspace, Youtube, and even MTV. They use these services to track the hundreds of millions of habbits, so they can understand us better. They want to know what to sell us, they want to know if we plot against them or steal their movies or music. The mpaa and such.

I'll be following this story as I mess with Youtube alot.

This is the sum of greed. Evil. Viacom are so rich they could wipe their butts with $100 bills if they wanted to, yet they'll go through all of this to pi$$ you, their customers, off just to get a few more bucks.

It's a matter of ego for them. They want to take on Google. I hope Google beats them, and counter-sues them.
