Just What Can Kick-Start the PS3 in Japan?

When the PS3's launched back in late 2006/early 2007 it was met with largely disappointing sales in many territories across the globe. Analysts and Sony fans alike increasingly looked to the future to cite possible PS3 titles that could lift sales to PS2 levels.

The latest sales figures from Japan have the PS3 falling steadily back to its pre-MGS4 sales levels drifting way behind the Wii just weeks after it stole headlines and surged past it - admittedly only for one week.

But it does beg the question; if one of the franchises most synonymous with the PlayStation can't rescue the PS3's fortunes, what can? Have people reached a time when software no longer pushes hardware, with consumers making their purchasing decisions based upon media specifications and firmware updates?

plus alot more! sony needs games, and particularly games that appeal to the market over there! a hefty price cut would help loads. but the most important ingredient, but unfortunately something that will not happen for sony, is it needs the wii to go away fast!!

even with the game that the fanboys were claiming would end everything and lift sony from the duldrums(mgs) has seen nothing more than a spurt! sony needs months and months of stellar titles, one here and there doesn't do enough.

and with them bleeding jrpgs to microsoft, that doesn't help either. with microsoft ready to open the check book for exclusivity. plus the high cost of development which coupled with the fact that alot of the jap developers want to expand into other regions, they're seeing multi-platform or just other platforms as a means to an end. especially as people with 360's buy more games than the rest.

bottom line, sony have been stomped by nintendo in every region! none more so than japan. they can only compete with microsoft in NA, and are barely managing 80k a more in europe a month! the playstation brand is not as strong or as impermiable as everyone thought, and with devs from their homeland dropping them for nintendo, or going to microsoft, things aren't gonna change overnight!

the paltry amount that they "outsell"(the worst fanboy word on the net)microsoft, they're gonna stay in third for another year atleast, and not add that much more incentive to go exclusive with them!

Dragon Quest would be sooo sweet on PS3, after playing DQ8 on PS2 (and playing it software emulated on my PS3 60gb) i converted from FF fan to DQ fan :) the world is just so alive, i also felt like i was watching an anime. "Cor Blimey !!" :)

If Crapcom didn't canceled Monster Hunter on PS3, i'm pretty sure it would be a hit in Japan. There is also a problem, the big lack of RPGs on PS3. Valkyria Chronicles has not made really huge figures (but still decent), so what can launch PS3 in Japan?

A price drop, casual games or multiplayer-games-that-ar-not- FPS. Something like Sony Smash Bros Brawl. For now, there is maybe Singstar, Buzz, but it's maybe not enough, and there is not only Japan which needs some funny multiplayer games.

Yeah, Capcom and exclusivity... Well, i guess a 360 / PS3 Monster Hunter would make enough profit for them, but when we see the HUGE score of 360 after the release of Gundam Blablabla, i guess it would be still profitable for the PS3.

And for the online and Wii, there would maybe some pre-registered sentances "Oh great!", "You are my buddy", "Let's neutralize some creatures", "Good job", etc...

MGS = not big in Japan

Really, more people should know this. MGS4 did very well, but that was quite a surprise.

FFXIII is going to be the biggest push in Japan. Other RPG's may help... but I can almost guarantee you there's gonna be a frenzy for that game. Let's just hope Sony doesn't underestimate the demand like with the 80GB bundles.

For some reason sony is trying to revert to become more western. They've even cancelled games like eight days and the getaway (ok even if there only delayed) because these games had no online elements. What sony needs to do during E3 is surprise the crap out of everyone and announce a lot more RPG/ Story Driven games. That's what japan wants, hell that's what I want.

Why is it so hard for Sony to release more RPGs? Turn based ones? Simply innovate, do not simply price drop. A console sells a lot not because of one game, but because of tons of games. And by tons of games I do not mean tons of FPS or tons of mediocre RPGs, I mean tons of quality games of diverse genres.

PS success is never dependent on one or few titles but rather once PS3 catelog hit mainstream/critical/mass appeal with a more affordable price point. Expect the PS3 sales to go up. Momentum started with MGS4 and will steam roll once FF13 arrives as well as GT5 with price drop and a host of other varied titles for the masses.

I do however believe that the gaming scene has changed in Japan with a shift to casual and handheld games so i really don't see Sony dominating Japan as like in the PS2 and PS1 era. Time will tell as its still early days.

More Japanese developed Playstation 3 exclusive games are needed to jumpstart the PS3. MGS4 has helped spur PS3 sales in Japan significantly and it's obvious that Japanese gamers ONLY go crazy for games that are developed by Japanese:

Team ICO PS3 Project
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy versus XIII
White Knight Chronicles
Dark Cloud 3 (possibly)
Price Drop

After all of the above things have taken place, Japan will be PS3 wonderland because just Final Fantasy XIII alone is a system seller even without a price drop. As long as the PS3 continues to recieve support exclusively from Japanese based studios/developers, the PS3 will flourish in Japan.

endure the media calling them desperate and drop the price. slash it dramatically and yu'll sell in boat loads to recoup by years end sell every ps3 at a 299 price point or even go lower at $250. with your price point and just have one PS3 on the market and you have yourself a a runaway sales blitz that wont stop because your price is in the very epicenter of the critcal mass market price. everyone knows Sony, that alone with a Wii price point will drive sales on a runaway train with no breaks for sony, and thats really all they need.

I agree with cmrbe the Japanese wan't quality and they know the PS3 is inferior to the 360 but are too proud to invest in a western console as an replacement as gaming is considered a Japanese revolution they feel it is a market they have matured into what it is today; it is part of Japans identity and not the same as MCdonalds and Cell phone companies lol.

The Wii is probably considered as some futuristic reality meets game world revolutuon device and that is were Japan is at heart when it comes to the latest trends and tech.
Wii's concept is far more next-gen than BLu-ray to the Japanese(MSFT knows this and has possibly got motion around the corner).

JRPG's may not help Sony beat the Wii and the 360 will do better than it is doing now due to JRPG's and sofware innovations(price is a whole nother issue not in Sony's favor).

If you check out XBL Leader Boards the Japanese overwhelmingly score high in XBL Arcade games and play the sh*t out of them because they like simple fun party-ish arcade coin type games(Wii kicking ass) more than most standard western games we like more.

The Japanese more than likely know the PS3 is inferior to the 360 by now but are too proud and rather join the Wii revolution anyways where the fun, bright, colorful games are at with Motion tech they don't find on PS3.

JRPG's will not be the savior of PS3 or a market/region winning console sales booster. One or two popular JRPG's can not sustain a victory when the competitions has more RPG's releasing than the type of games that made it popular, this is world wide of course.

Yes, I do own a PS3 and I'm about to own a Wii as well. That's why I'm here most of the time so I can hear about PS3 news and what Sony is doing for ME as a consumer. I'd say that they're doing a really good job.

1. RROD is still rampant.
2. Disk scratching is a b*tch.
3. You can't even turn on your console without worrying about it getting that dreaded error code.

5. Microshaft would rather milk off of overhyped franchises than to be innovative for once.

The PS3 only plays bluray movies? Um...buddy, I can play PS3 and PS2 games on my system. I rarely play movies on my PS3 because I bought it for games. The games are starting to deliver. The 360 is just heading down the tubes.

Microshaft released the 360 early because they wanted to be *number* one. When you want to be number one, you don't care about what happens. You don't even care about your consumers. You just care about the cash and being in the lead. Microshaft should have focused on making a more reliable console than worrying about being in first place. They rushed the damn thing out the market and they're STILL NOT IN FIRST PLACE! How is it that Nintendo is in first place?

And Vega, you seem to forget that Sony is first and foremost a hardware company. These things HAPPEN. What, did you expect the PS3 to be so damn perfect that nothing could possibly go wrong? And on top of that, you're asking me what makes me think it'll be better?

I'll tell you what will make me believe it'll be better next time.

I have faith in Sony to get things right this time around.

They've come a long way since 2007 because back then, it was almost shameful to own a PS3. Oh booooy, the things I've been hearing about the PS3! It only plays bluray movies! It'll never be on par with the 360! It'll become the next Dreamcast! Sony dropped the ball! Blah, blah, blah. It was hard to defend yourself when you owned a PS3.

This is now 2008, and Sony has done a remarkable job. Yes, they talked smack back in 2007 and I was annoyed with their arrogance but they are learning a valuable lesson. You seem to forget that the 360 had issues with their update as well and it lasted for around two months. This update can and will get fixed. Thankfully my update went through without a hiccup, otherwise I would have been upset as well.

You want to call the trophy half-assed? I would say right now that it's a LOT better than what MS offers. I'm not too into the trophy thing, but once Little Big Planet comes, I'll want to get used to it. I love how you're badmouthing something like this when it could revolutionize gaming on the PS3.

You can attack them for having this issue, but I guarantee that when they deliver, you'll be kissing up. If you feel that Sony dropped the ball, then you should sell your PS3. Every time I see your name, you're always badmouthing Sony. I'm not a blind fan when it comes to Sony because I know there were times that I wanted to sell my PS3 and get a 360 because the only game I owned for my PS3 was Ninja Gaiden Sigma. But I'm glad I didn't sell it and get a 360, otherwise I would have been one of those people complaining about the RROD and disk scratching.

I'm proud to own a PS3, because if Sony delivered with the PS1 and the PS2, they sure as hell can deliver with the PS3. And 360 fanatics, you can flame me as much as you want. You can curse me out, call me a b*tch, etc, etc. But you will never, and I mean NEVER shut my mouth up when it comes to the PS3 because I will be there, putting you in your damn place.

You can go ahead and let Microsoft shaft you out of your money, and your freedom as gamers.

GeOW2 won't be a system seller. People who're buying GeOW2 should already have the first GeOW. It'll sell consoles but not as big as you Xbots think. Comparing it to other PS3 titles like...

Hardware; Do you like your headset? Do you like your cheap keyboard that you connect to your controller? I like my bluetooth headset, no wires. Did you buy the cheap-as keyboard that you plug into your controller. While me I can just use my bluetooth keyboard and connect it, no wires - not even an inch.

Hard-drive; 360's hard drives are overpriced and the capacity is just too low. Good thing I can buy a third party hard drive for a lower price with a bigger capacity. If I wanted to I can upgrade it to 1TB. Too bad you can't do that with your 360.

Online; Hows XBL treating you? You Xbots still wasting money on a sh!t service? PS3 online gameplay is free and soon enough I'll be able to play mint games like Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Socom Confrontation online for free.

Home; Heard you guys don't like Home but wait a minute, it seems like you're going to get cheap crap clone of it. My Gamerpad? It looks much worse than Home. Actually you can't compare My Gamerpad with Home because it just looks that crap. Sucks to be one of you.

i had to laugh a BS you wrote. you are a hypocrite and have the nerve to come at me about bashing the ps3. when you guys are in more 360 threads then most 360 fans bashing the 360. talking about MS should have built a better system. but forget that the ps1 and the ps2 had problems too. i should know because i went thru it. so the ps3 being reliable should be a given. because it took you three times just to get it right. and yes sony is a hardware company so they should know better. on i don't think 360 is better. but 1) i haven't had a problem yet since launch. and 2) knowing if i do have one that MS will take care of the RROD for free. something sony didn't do for me last gen. except for the last time which was the third time for me.

You want to call the trophy half-assed? yes i do. i think it half-ass when you are claiming the trophies is better than achievements. but don't support all ps3 games. but you don't care right!! as long as MGS4,R2,LBP,KZ2, and future games use it. that is all that matter to you. but it is better than live which is supported in every 360 game out and to come. so do i give credit to sony for taking almost 2 years to come up with something to counter what MS did from the start? NO. especially when all ps3 games won't use it.

i don't think MS is the best or do i think that some of the thing they do is right. like paying for multi-player. but i understand that keeping older and new games server running cost. and finding a room on pdz,graw,cod2,ect. and ppl still playing it is fun and everyone has headsets. so playing as a group or with clan members is far better than any game i played on psn. cough warhark,RfoM,MGO

Simply put, the 360 WILL NEVER do well in Japan. Between it's hardware issues and the arrogance required to tolerate such an immature and ignorant community (play ONE round of Halo 3 on XBL and I dare you to argue that), the Japanese won't stoop that low.

Japanese by culture alone are polite, humble and respectful to one another. Name one thing about an Xbox 360 that's humble, polite or respectful. On XBL, polite and respectful are four-letter words.

And Japanese devs, while making some pretty good JRPG's on 360, are more or less blacklisted. I can already tell you that unless Microsoft scoops up Itagaki he'll never develop in Japan ever again because he is seen over there as arrogant and rude.
