1 - Good article.
I like the end of the article:

"Isn’t it funny that only now do we understand why Phil Harrison keeps on saying, “The PlayStation Family” is doing well? He really was referring to this multi-tier gaming business, and it was sad that amidst the fanboyism of yesteryear; none of us really saw what he was referring to. Everybody’s head was too far up next-gen gaming’s ass to see anything outside of the box."

So true! :)

1.2 - It actually was an ok article
The thing about the playstation family is that it appeals to a whole list of gamers.

The ps3 in and of itself creates interest among Movie fans, some gamers, tech heads, and in the coming months in the UK your basic Tivo types due to the new features it's bringing.

The psp is the only other hand held thus far to hold a candle against the line of nintendo handhelds and is more or less the swiss pocket knife of handheld gaming. What with the ability to use Skype, custom firmware, surf the web, or just play visually stunning games like God of War.

The ps2 still holds the greatest library of games no matter how you try to spin it. It's basically the competing format against the Wii if you want to battle it out for price. It loses in some of the casual appeal, but it kills all its competitors when it comes to a large quantity of quality titles.

All of these formats working together create a brand name that surpasses most if not all of the other game brands.

Can't wait for future articles from this genius:

"Sony's brilliant foresight in using electricity to power the PS3"

"Who would have known Sony's combination of games and movie support in the PS3 would be so popular?"

7 - I don't think
Sony has unknowingly created a multi-tiered market for themselves reason for my assumption is because there are billions on the line and no room for mistakes. Also when the Ps2 came out people were saying that they wished they can play Ps1 games on it which happened thats when they realized they can co-exist in harmony think of it as when you want to fight someone how can they defeat you when you bring your family which Phil Harrison keeps on saying. That in its self proves they knowingly created it thanks to the people who wanted to play Ps1 games on the Ps2 by doing so Sony had to rethink there strategy. From a business stand point it makes no sense why do you think Microsoft stopped production on the first Xbox ?????? (I do not work for Sony or Microsoft this is just my opinion if you are offended I am sorry)

8 - Wait, everyone is saying stuff about the ps4
I heard about one year earlier, that sony didn't have intentions of releasing a ps4, that ps3 was the final system they would come out with.

Have they changed this?

@Hellangelzx

actually what i read somewhere was that sony mention that the ps3 might be the last disc base system in their line up as they would than move on to the Digital era themselves.

however just recently i also heard that the ps4 was indeed in the works but not to expect it anytime soon, im assuming that yeah blu ray would still be in the cards for the ps4 platform why? well 50gb is now but tomorrow were probably going to be talking 200gb and add to the fact that by the time the ps4 does come out, blu ray will be real cheap and affordable so sony would not only make money on it, but developers will take advantage of this phenomenon.

for all we know, and where sony stands financially the ps4 might just end up being a ps3 but with major upgrades in the architecture department such as memory and video cards and such.

imagine 4 gigs of ram, a cell with 16 spe's and the best graphics card known to man and of course 500gb of drive space from the get go, as for blu ray well? 200gb? yes. also by this time most blu ray movies will be cheap grabs were talking what? 14, 10 bucks for a blu ray movie? games like crysis will become an after thought.

thats just my assumption, as for the psp 2 the thing will have pretty much everything found in an iphone plus a mini keybord kinda like those verizon Vizio phones with key pads and touch screen thus allowing for an extra num and an integrated camera, will be upgradeable, plus have phone capabilities as well, i presume them mini blu rays would be put to use after all those mini blu rays are 16gb each which is more than enough for big games and a built in HDD, and like ipods these psp's will be categorize by the size of their HDD's with the biggest being 60 gb. i mean there are ipods that go all the way up to 60gb these days so i don't see why cant a psp handhold have one either. one universal account for both your psp2 and your ps4 just like sony is trying to do now with the psp and the ps3 and the ability to check your trophies and friends from the go.

i don't know thats just what i think.

the only rumor related to this, is that when microsoft releases a graphically more superior xbox than PS3.. they will enable the 8th SPU core for developers to use to be on par with the new Xbox...
but aside from that... can't wait for the PS9 :)

9 - As long as my PS3 games work on my PS4 i'll be happy!
3-d gaming and 3dtv sounds really weird, and probably going to be pretty nauseating (sp?) as well.

PS9 will be a chair with a syringe that "jacks into" your brain ala the Martix.

DON"T EVER MESS WITH "THE FAMILY" not even the great nintendo has this mafioso class to it to have ever been called a family, and they are the original console gangsters.

If PS4 is going to be anything like PS3, there's going to be trouble for Sony... Unless they suddenly discontinue PS2 completely, focus what resources they had on PS2 to PS3 and take PS4 as flagship. Not happening.

Yes, let's not argumentate at all why we disagree. Face it, even a corporate conglomerate like Sony can't handle the juggling that THREE different consoles on market by them would bring in. It's just not plausible. Look at them right now. PS3 is selling, yes, but at loss. PS2 is eating away sales. What would a third console bring to that equation? Less sales for both PS3 and PS2. Even less for the 3rd one. Brand loyalty goes only so far.

The gamers that think the PS2 will cause an issue aren’t ignorant. They just are aware you cannot have two rulers without losing servants to the other. The PS2 and PS3 can exist with each other; you just give something for the other. PS2 had the larger install base and unfortunately that hurts the PS3. PS3 needs the larger install base to win favor over the 360 for the sake of getting exclusives and getting developers to make more games.

Sorry to say while Sony is able to hedge its losses with the continued existence of the PS2. In the long run it ends up taking away from the PS3. So when it’s time to finally retire the PS2 the PS3 may not have a library comparable to what the PS2 offered. So what then?

We really didn't expect the ps3 to sell so poorly compared to the ps2, so we are going to keep supporting the ps2 for as long as we can because thats where the majority of our money is being made right now...

15 - lets see now....
@superaktieboy 8.5 -

seriously that wont happen why? well you see the ps3 isn't exactly a beast when it comes down to the memory so... if sony is to say...upgrade the psn by adding features than that 8th SPE along with maybe one other would become unusable for the developers thats for sure, so the ps3 might end up being like a ps2 next to an xbox but probably cheaper and superior in other areas.

256 of ram doesn't exactly help the ps3 in anyway, so the cell is pretty much what evens the ps3 architecture out. just think...

features like fw 2.40 along the expected features like say...

1. voice/video mail.
2.cross chat (cant go on without this)imagine you on the browser searching for something, your buddy playing a game while both chat with one another via headset.
3. flash support and more speed for the browser.
4. search engine in ps store( that would be nice to have) checked!
5. time/date/ weather via ps button press, )this might not be a needed feature but its convenient to have specially if your playing hours before you are set to go out somewhere) checked via LIFE
6. more psone classics on the ps store, specially 3rd party psone ips strider, contra, final fantasy 7,8 ect.
7. ps2 games for distribution on the ps store( this way those without BC can enjoy in the action as well. plus it would make the psn that much better if you ask me.
8. pre-loaded thumbnails/images on the ps store.
9. music & tv shows store( i mean if any company has the power to this its sony they own one of the biggest tv and music production studios on the planet so yeah the rights shouldn't be much of a problem.)
10. double or triple the friends list count, asap. checked!
11. a more in depth profile system, like what games you play most favorite genre, when last seen online, what type of gamer you are, your accomplishments thus far ect.
12. 4/6way voice/video chat, yeah i know danm,....
13. alert sound/ log in, log off sound,
14. alert sound/ message sound, sound for every time you get a message.
15. Sent Message to all feature/option-sent the same voice/video/text massage\mail to all friends.

Plus things like HOME, LIFE with playstation, and the video store will add to that usage as well.

and games like killzone 2 already use 4 of those SPE's? look if the psn is to improve or match xbox live feat by feat the Spe's will be hit as they will be targeted as well. so lets just say that the cell has been keeping the ps3 a float with the 360. had the ps3 had say 512 of ram instead of the 256 it currently has than the SPe's wouldn't have to be put to use for simple tasks that should come included with the original architecture.

so because of what i just listed above i disagree with your theory sorry.

The PSP and PS3 aren't doing well so I don't see the logic in this. PS2 is almost dead as well. I'm talking in general about PSP, as in overall, not Japan.

16.1 - lol
look just cuz the psp isn't outselling the DS worldwide doesn't mean isn't doing good, anytime a product sells at a healthy rate in which i generates money for a company it doesn't matter whether its first or last as long as the profits come in its all good.

besides the psp has been outselling everything in japan for the last month and half due to one game called monster hunter. so its doing okay now the 360 on the other hand isn't even selling above 3300 units now that is bad my friend, and i know while its not good to compare handheld to console, its also good to realize whats good and whats really bad in this market. as of last year the psp actually started posting some very healthy numbers so while the DS is outselling it, to sony that at this point in time is irrelevant my friend as long as the thing posts a profit every now and than.

as for the ps2, yeah we all know its slowly dying, but even at this rate sony is still racking in some good chunk change from this old machine as we speak, look if the ps2 were to be in a serious bad position sony would either take it of the shelves which has not done yet or... logically speaking price drop it to say a more convincing price. the truth is the ps2 doesn't cost sony anymore than say 55 bucks to put together believe that, and at 130 bucks one can easily see and understand why sony isn't losing much by keeping the ps2 alive and on shelves. yeah sure while this 7,8 year machine is losing its steam it doesn't really matter to sony as long as it brakes certain numerical barriers every month say at least 1,000,00.00 or 66,00.00 every month is still a good thing, oh those numbers don't reflect worldwide sales just U.S. so yeah sony isn't losing money on either the psp and definitely not on the ps2, if anything the whole 10 year cycle thing is probably what i would take for sony to start getting even or making some money on the ps3, which many predict will happen sometime in 09. trust me, by this time next year the ps2 will still be around even if its selling a mere 99,999 a month. why? again, profits my friend, profits that could be later used for other things as far as a company like sony is concerned. you do the math.

unlike the ps2 the original xbox wasn't making MS any money at all, so for them it was actually a smart move to pull a sega ala dreamcast with 360 and launch first it was the only way, oh and hustle a few key games here and there to stay on top of things this gen.

but with sony again, if its making profits why get rid of it so soon? why not just stick with it and milk it until its all dried up? and believe me, even at this rate the ps2 in all honesty has a few more years than many want you to believe specially if its making a profit at a decent 100,000.00 consoles sold a month with barely no games at all, lol are you kidding me? at this point in time all sony has to do really is price drop the thing come e3 to 99 and the thing will start outselling every other product on the market and than we will sit here and watch the anylists weight in their opinions known as forecasts upon us, lol its that simply really.

i bet you this, the wii will be around longer than even nintendo expects it to be, due to its current and ongoing success, i mean a company like nintendo who has by the way been hanging around due to its handheld division can now afford to breathe easier thanks to the wii, cuz every other console before that was a disaster well except for the snes of course. lol so logically speaking you will see nintendo pull a sony come time for the new hardware to make an entrance, not to mention the ps3 will still be around doing its thing at a lower price of course. its just how business works, make a profit and ill keep you in the game son.

Because PS2 is eating sales from PS3 by existing. Yes, it's eating sales from Wii as well, but not nearly enough for it to be really a prospect anymore. It'll take quite long for Sony to recoup the losses they are incurring from PS3 with each sale, and if they aren't dominant by the time they really get any profit from PS3, it's too late by then. They themselves created the model where console should be sold on loss and then the losses be recouped through software. Only it isn't working if you aren't the market leader..

supremacy - 536 days 19 hours ago
17 - lol well......
@KeiZka 16.2 -

lol okay so the ps2 is eating up ps3 sales we all know that but that really isn't hurting sony as much as it should, i mean that were to be the case the ps2 would have been removed from shelves its that simple my friend. after all the ps2 like the ps3 is sony's property so its cool to them i suppose.

now what really hurts them however is MS buying all these exclusives and eating their market share, and nintendo assisting with the wii, that hurts them, not so much the ps2 my friend.

the other thing you got to realize is that, the ps3 is also a blu ray player and a cheap one at that. and trust me a good percentage of ps3's have been sold as blu ray bundles and have garner sales in that area as well as the gaming area.

look by this time next year blu ray would only get cheaper and movies will become more affordable which is also to say the ps3 will remain the cheapest yet among the best blu ray players on the market. that said the ps3 is bound for some more growth and sony will start making a profit sooner than most people think, i mean go ahead read the articles is all there sony had cut its losses by more than half in just over a year, so in another year or two they will be making a profit, and for sony no it wont be too late i mean heck the ps2 is still here for crying out loud.

even when ps2 first came out the psone was still around doing its numbers while the ps2 sold to the masses as a cheap dvd player. obviously the games than started coming from left and right and next thing you know the ps2 became the most dominant console of all time thus far. as for the psone well? that got phased out quietly.

now had sony taken sega's route and started releasing consoles every other year than that would have been a different story my friend, yeah i know sony isn't the market leader anymore but they aren't dead, those guys are making profits of their platforms, once the ps3 starts making a decent profit than im pretty sure you will see the ps2 go the way of the psone.

also by this time im pretty sure sony would have more exclusives to offer its customers, i mean uncharted 2, twisted metal syphon filter, GT5, Heavy rain, wardevil, and many more are being prepped for 09 and beyond.

the way i see it even the wii will still be around long after the new xbox system hits shelve in a few years, why? i mean right now MS is really the only one who could really afford to keep bringing out consoles like sega did, and not that nintendo or sony cant either but looking at the economical situation the gaming industry is under, is purely easy to see why sony would keep the ps3 running even long after the ps4 arrives to the scene.

and your right sony would have to sell software to recoup their losses but so does ms and every one else in this business, but again the ps3 has at least two venues of recouping these loses, one of them is of course the games, and the other is blu ray movies, which kept the ps3 afloat in 07 when it supposedly had no games?

so i don't see why this has to change or will change in a few months specially when the good films start to hit this fall, man and with the amount of people buying HDTV's these days with those specials going around just before February you know when the digital era begins and everyone is pretty much forced to upgrade their television sets, who's to say sony isn't going to take advantage of this? with their tv promos, games and movies?

lol man.... so right now sony is on the right path and it isn't hurting like many like you to believe. bottom line is, sony is fine, and both the ps2 and psp are doing them more good than harm, especially if you consider ps2's role in all this is to after all help offset ps3 losses. better the ps2 eat up some of your sales than say.. the wii? lol
