If Microsoft Buys SEGA, who will lose the most?

If Microsoft buys SEGA, who will hurt or lose the most? There has been a rumor of "Microsoft buying SEGA" and well if Microsoft did buy SEGA what would happen.

I was expecting more from the MS desperation act known as "Let's just make some crap up and throw it out there".

Must be nice not to need an innovative piece of hardware but rather market a machine that dies constantly and back it up will plenty of acolytes willing to open a half-ass website and just invent unsubstantiated rumors. But then again if you look at the intelligence level of persons willing to swallow such crap it isn't all that mysterious.

I hope they do it, Sega[Sammy] is a mess. I pray every night for Jet Set Radio Future 2. The reason Sega isn't ambitious about their games is because they are scared and don't want to risk losing money hence why Sonic The Hedgehog for PS3/X360 flopped.

Sega is a waste of money I don't see how the 360 can be profitable from them. The sega sports games, the sonic games on wii, and all the last generation casual games are profitable. But coming on 360 they have to spend so much more for the advanced graphics but the games aren't going sell well except for Shemmue 3 that is the one exception. Shemmue 3 is probably 360 exclusive regardless if MS buys them or not so buying Sega would be pointless and a waste of money.

1.5 - GREAT games Ape007
I swear, I've always looked at the Xbox 360 as the re-incarnation of my beloved Dreamcast.

Well the only reason this would be good is that MS sure needs the help in the 1st-party boat.

They just do. Their money seem to speak the loudest instead of their 1st-part studios..so why not.

Kigmal you are 100% correct. The last great games made by sega were on the original xbox. Shenmue 2, JSRF, and Panzer Dragoon Orta. They all flopped commercially and sega has not taken a risk or made a great game since. I don't see how people can disagree.

Morganfell we get it. You hate XBOX. Save your rants for the open zone fanboy.

Oh yes Kigmal, and Micrsoft would help Sega how!?

Microsoft are just as stingy, and wait for others to innovate and take risks, before doing so themselves. That's why they are alwasy playing catchup everywhere but America. And Why America? Well I'll tell you why and it also goes for UK and I am fully British, it's becuase of the insularity.

6.1 - Like Bungie?
Microsoft bought Bungie, turned out 3 multi-platinum games including the best selling console exclusive Halo 3 and then pretty much gave them their freedom back just so they could keep a healthy partnership going. Sounds like a real lose-lose to me.

How is it you are posting this rubbish in the Gamer Zone anyway?

What are, 5? You apparently know little about the great innovation that was Bungie prior to Gates greed being inflicted on them.

MS swallowed them up and in 8 years we got 3 games, all on the same subject. Do you really think that is maximizing a studio's creativity? No it is called putting them in leg irons and beating them to produce one product.

I might as well take some intellectual Chinese kid that has the ability to change modern medicine and force him into a sweatshop for Nike. He may produce an okay tennis shoe but it is hardly showing his real talent.

Bungie didn't want to leave MS because things were wine and roses. Bungie wanted out because it was destroying the company, murdering creativity and ruining people's careers. Why do you think some of their top people were leaving already. Geesh, wake up.

Death - 541 days 14 hours ago
6.3 - Huh.
Bungie like any other company in the world exists to make money. I've yet to meet someone that wakes up and goes to work with the sole purpose of being creative. The idea is to turn your creativity into something that earns you a living. Halo has made Microsoft and Bungie quite a bit of money. Once you have established yourself and have a decent chunk of cash, you can then afford to do something "creative".

Once Bungie kicked the collective worlds ass with Halo 3, they were in the unique position a successful developer hits and that is where to go next. Bungie wanted independance, that was the next step up. Microsoft could have retained the bungie name along with the Halo IP, but wisely choose to let Bungie be Bungie and still have a good working relationship with the talent that makes the games.

Your version of reality sounds nice, but goes against common sense and the little fact that everyone is in this business to make money.

It isn't a 'nice dream'. Your idea is welcome to the 1800's. Your way is the most outmoded in this industry and everyone knows it. It is why I have watched one person after another abandon the Ubisoft studio where I have done somw work here. Your idea is worry about the money first and then we will see how we can channel the creativity to make more of said money. The product actually suffers because of this because money, rather than creativity is the focus. Result? Product is less worthy and makes less money.

New school of thought employed by companies like Insomniac and now Bungie again. Be creative and that creativity will innovate and develop things that will enthrall people. You get groundbreaking titles and the money follows in line. It doesn't mean you are ignorant of costs but you know and exercise the fact that creativity, that true innovation sells more than sleight of hand tricks to save dollars.

It is like people that hate working out to get fit. The fitness routine is such a chore but they want that end result. So they suffer through every workout looking at their watch. But when they embrace those workouts and love them, have fun with them, the fitness follows in line.

It is time to join the 21st century and get rid of outmoded thinking. otherwise I don't know anyone that would want to work in a company run according to your Draconian ideas. You will get a few starters and once they get a portfolio that matters they will leave for a better, less restrictive environment that pays even if it is the same money.

6.6 - So,
Does this mean Lair was a success? It was a very creative game that used the Sixxaxis motion controls, yet it didn't sell anywhere near as much as expected. At the same time Halo 1, 2, and 3 were very successful and you believe Bungie was in bad shape because the were unable to be creative on the titles? Your theory sounds good, but the real world numbers do not back it up.

Because they were the most over-hyped game's i've ever seen.EVER.
I couldnt turn on the t.v without seeing the ad run through twice every comercial on almost every channel. And the countless tv spoofs of it,MAD T.V,Spike ferrestein, jimmy kimmel etc.

Not to mention back when halo 1,2,3 came out. There really wasnt much else to buy.

Obviously it's gonna sell well.
Doesnt mean its a good game..

It is sad you do not have the intellectualism to understand what I am talking about. Too bad it requires thinking outside the box or else you and I might actually be able to converse. There is a vast difference between ingenuity and creativity versus a gimmick and I think most motion controls are gimmicks. I have a Wii but the fact is most games on there are just pure crap.

Regarding Lair I had no trouble with the controls. The newer analog versions work well but the game had a host of other issues really not related to controls schemes at all. Like I said, if controls are the only thing that make your game then the game is ass in the first place.

Sorry but you are dead wrong. The real world does back me up. Bungie was bleeding personnel like a stuck pig and many of them grew to not just dislike but outright despise working there. I like the HALO series, do not misunderstand that. But the fact is HALO2 couldn't put a dent in PS3 sales and HALO 3 came and was then quickly crushed by COD4. Sorry pal but the real word does back me up. Bungie was suffering under the lash of MS. If it was so damn great belonging to Redmond and so damn free do you really think they would have fought for their freedom? No. Too bad but the facts are in my corner on this one.

6.9 - Here you go Morgon,
http://www.1up.com/do/newsS...

"This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games," said Bungie studio head Harold Ryan in the press release. "We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft's platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios, and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through Halo and beyond."

Sounds like you nailed this one on the head. Can you possibly post me a link to the bleeding personnel? Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall this happening at Bungie. It's not uncommon for some to leave and create a new start up company, but I don't even remember seeing this happen at Bungie. Last time I met the Bungie team they seemed very busy, but happy. Granted it wasn't a long visit and my access was very limited so I suppose I might have had a false impression. Surely you have spent much more time with them than I.

Death for all elitst undertone you put in that comment, you can't possibly ignore Team ICO. They never sold their games into the millions, and yet they are continuing. 1st party too.

That's creative drive, something Microsoft doesn't let happen.

By that I mean they just want the sequels out there. Not one Team ICO game has been the same thus-far, and I doubt they'll break from that paradigm.

6.11 - Microsoft Game Studios is much more than Halo.
Viva Pinata is possibly the most under rated Xbox title to date. Rare did a fanatastic job creating a new IP that has not received the praise or sales it deserves. Did Nicrosoft put pressure on Bungie to make a Halo sequel? Absolutely. The reason for this was the demand and pressure from the millions of fans. I am sure that Microsoft would want to duplicate the series success on a dozen more IP's if it were possible.

Take a look at Microsoft Game Studios portfolio and you will see more than one game that has taken a chance with creativity. To say they only want to push multiplatinum sequels is unfair at best.

not everything is JUST about money. I completely agree with Morganfell. Ofcourse money is generally the most important thing to people but some people also prefer to have fufilling and meaningful jobs. For example if am a CEO of a company its nice to get the big bucks but it would be even better if my work will help me reach my full potential.

MS is very similar to EA where money is put before everything else with little emphasis on quality and fostering creativity. You talk about Lair but at least they tried unlike say EA that does the same thing again and again without any innovation. I agree that this is the way of the world right now with mass production and consumption and everything feels like it docent have a soul. However if you play a game like MGS4 you can just tell how much effort Kojima productions put into it unlike say Halo 3 which felt like just another generic FPS that was rushed out to beat the PS3.

Morgan is right. All the reported stories back him up. Infinity Ward didn't compromise on quality and they reaped the benefits with COD4. The fact that MS has lost their grip on a few devs that were resposible major hits like Halo,PGR,Mass Effect is a sign.

...and if MS can pull out some major exclusives out of this deal, then maybe they go for it. Would love to see the next-gen return of Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, and Jet Set Radio (bubble for you 'ape007'--- memories...!), and as MS exclusives they could be big... Still, see this one as a major risk for MS. Why Sega when they could have had Bioware, or Pandemic, or 2K, or Tecmo, etc.? Why bother with Sega NOW?

If Microsoft buys Sega.... who cares.

There hasn't been a really notable game title released by Sega in ages. Bayonetta is really the only thing that Sega has going for it right now.

.... I don't even think that I own one single Playstation 1, or PS2 game developed/published by Sega either and I already know that I don't have one single PS3 game developed/published by Sega and I haven't been much of a fan of Sega's games either except for Sonic back in the early 90's.

If I was Microsoft or Sony I wouldn't be wasting money on buying Sega.

I know i'll be pissed at them anyway until they make amends to the shining force serie , with a true and decent sequels , or at the very least a good sonic game (with unleashed seems to be shaping up to be) .
