360 Price Drop: Genius or Costly Mistake?

There's no denying that pinching pennies is on every American's mind right now. Well, at least those that own automobiles. With gas approaching the cost per gallon of Starbucks coffee, people can only hope and pray that hydrogen-powered cars are the real deal, or, that a Matisse shows up an unsuspecting owner's yard sale.

Economy woes have gamers in a bit of a tizzy as well. Software buying decisions are now made only after thorough research has been done, for example. The same goes for consoles– pros and cons are taken into account before a major home appliance such as an Xbox 360, a PS3 or a Wii is purchased.

1 - Who knows?
It's like Sony's Firware Disaster of 2008...

There could be drastic changes made to improve the situation, or it could basically just be left alone.

Seriously...nice to have you back

Anyway price drop is good for every gamer except for Nintendo fans since price drop will have no effect regardless.

1.2 - What's the bigger mistake here?
The price drop, or the idea that they're reselling refurbished consoles as new?

2 - It's possibly 50 bucks,
if you can afford a 360 at 299, you likely to capable of affording a 360 at 349. It would be a big deal if the price was dropping to 199. That's generally your mass market number.

Maybe it's not just about "affording" it. Maybe it's more about value for the money? Ever thought about it that way?

Now people who were interested in a 360 for $349, might have felt it's too steep to invest in. But once it's $299, they'll feel much better purchasing it. Heck, it's basically $299 + 1 game which equals the price of a 360 right now.

3 - I think it's a good idea.
With the rising costs of Gas, food and just about everything else, it's nice to see something I'm interested reducing it's cost.

I know I'm staying home a lot more and it would be nice for others to do it at a lower cost.

Also $50.00 is almost the price of a new game and is the price of XBL for a year so how do you beat that?.
Ya can't just say you are buying the machine alone, wadda gonna play on it?

I know my $399.00 purchase quickly turned into almost $600.00 after buying several games.
It's very easy to be nickel and dimed when buying any new system, extra controllers, extra cables, games, chargers or whatever, every little bit helps.
I think the $50.00 off is a good thing for gamers.

Sony should follow suit. most likely around September when the big games are coming out. imagine a $400 80gb(or 120gb) ps3 bundled with LBP or MGS4. irresistible. still alot of money tho.

I think that the Xbox 360 price drop is more of a move of desperation on Microsoft's part because the PS3 has outsold the 360 almost every month of this year at a higher price point and that's obviously something Microsoft doesn't want.

However, even if the Xbox 360 20GB price does drop to $299.99, you are always going to have people out there that will go out of their way and spend $100 bucks more for a 40GB PS3 because it's something that they want regardless of the higher price. Plus, the PS3 already has several built in features that make the extra price very justifiable. I mean come on, $100 bucks more for a game system that has built in Wifi and Blu-ray, it's a no brainer.

Plus, a $50 dollar price drop really isn't a substantial price drop and it might increase the 360's sales by several thousand a month in the United States, but that's really all I expect. Also, there really isn't a new or hot Xbox 360 exclusive game title to go along with that 360 price drop either and that's another reason why I don't expect the 360's price drop to do too much damage.

6 - As a gamer
I have to say i can care less if it's costly to them, boohoo a multibillion dollar corporation losses a few million dollars they'll just make it back up another way. I'm a consumer i don't have any remorse for these companies as long as they give me what i'm looking for. Which is why i didn't particular care that Sony lost 3 billion because us consumers are capitilizing from their losses with more affordable consoles and games being put out of a better quality across both platforms.

7 - I LIKE THE $50 PRICE DROP...
...but I would like to see it in concert with some other moves by MS, like making the HDD standard by eliminating/revisioning the arcade (20GB HDD included?). Why not give us a break on the hard drive prices and at the same time introduce bigger ones to take over their price point? You could drop the 20GB to $49, introduce the new 60GB at $99, drop the 120GB to $129, and finally introduce a 200GB at the 120GBs former $179 price point. You would kill two huge obstacles for the 360 with one stone... eliminating 360 gamers' griping (legitimate griping by the way) about the HDDs being overpriced, and at the same time quell the outcry from gamers and developers for the HDD to be finally standardized. Not to mention MS would get to keep profitting on the new 60GB and 200GB HDDs. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for E3....

10.3 - the price drop is NA
where the 360 competes with the ps3 more than adequately! that's why they haven't dropped the price yet. people seem to forget the fact that the ps3 is not the be all and end all there.

even with the release of mgs, the game that the fanboys on here were claiming would destroy the 360, the ps3 only managed to beat the 360 by a paltry 20k in may...it mite even beat it by 50k in june!

but either way, those figures alone aren't gonna help sony eat into the 5mil they are behind in NA. the ps3 needs wii or ps2 type sales figures to make a dent. and microsoft dropping the price is gonna guarantee that the 5mil deficit remains for a long time.

suck it up fanboys!

11 - Analyst are saying the rise in fuel prices is keeping people at home this summer.
Now is the perfect time to lower the price since it will give these people something to do while they are home. It's a brilliant move in my opinion.

12 - Microsoft Chooses White as the Color of the Next Xbox Console... Easy on the Eyes or Full of Racist Undertones???
See what I just did there...

These 2 way article titles that are written every time a game company make a decision are starting to become nauseating.
