Still idiots out there that think Halo is the be-all-end-all of first person shooters.

Halo is a great series (I played the hell out of Halo 1), but people really need to quit the "Halo = godlike" mentality.

Master Chief was obviously influenced by the infamous Doom marine. Its the same with Solid Snake, he was influenced by Snake Plissken. These characters don't put influences in other games, they had influences placed on them. Plus no self respecting devs will have their characters be influenced by MC or Snake simple because it doesn't make any sense to clone, a clone.

If a game has you caring about its hero, like so many care for MC or Snake, then the game did its job in the emotion department. MC has just as much of an influence as Snake or any other major video game hero, simply because they mean so much to the people who play their games.

To whoever disagreed with that, please put your fanboyism aside. My point was that, epically speaking, Master Chief did a perfectly fine job at touching his audience (you wouldn't understand the "Believe" campaign otherwise). To say he wasn't an influential hero is asinine. I'm not saying MC is more or less of an influence compared to Snake, but an influence nonetheless.

I'm down with Super mario bros and Xevious. 2 of my all time favorite games. Easily.

halo has no place on anyone's influential list, by the way.

I remember the first time i played the original Halo and everything just... fitted. The game was stunning for it's time and the controls were pretty intuitive as far as console FPS games went. That's not to say there aren't better games now, but Halo did have a big input in console shooters, and in keeping the original Xbox afloat in a market of skeptics.

2.9 - wh wh wh what?!???
If you played pc games then you'd realize that all Halo did was successfully bring first person shooters to consoles in a way where gamers weren't saying "Screw controllers, where's my mouse".

Other then that it didn't bring anything that wasn't brought before.

So yea. Stop being one of those ignorant kids yapping off about Halo and do some damn research. I know most N4g users know what i'm talking about. Yes it was a fun game and did have great controls , but it's just another shooter that has now been overshadowed by Call of Duty. (I'm not even a huge COD fan anymore either)

This quote really made me smirk:

"Halo has left an indelible mark upon gaming in general, almost single-handedly redefining the relatively young FPS genre."

FPS games have been around since the late eighties. Get a clue, idiot.

Since when does your own game _not_ influence you? I think it's fair to say that each of his games has improved (or just changed) upon the previous.

Especially if it turned out to be unexpectedly good.. you may wanna out do your self or push the limits which in kojima's case he really does or at least try to...

Why is Kojima listing his own game MGS as one of the most influential. Doesn't that seem a little pretentious?

... or am I missing something?

7.2 - I thought the same, then I thought again
And as someone else pointed out above, if you think about it, it might not have influenced him when he made Metal Gear Solid. But I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that it was very influential in his creation of MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4. I think that's what he means when he lists it.

8 - Sorry but to me influential games means it spawns other games like it into the market
To me the most influential games are

1) doom 1
2) Dune 2
3)Ultima online
4) Star Craft
5) Gran Turismo

He didn't say what was influential to the general public or the market, he just said what he himself was influenced by personally. Although the original MGS was certainly an extremely influential game.

Out of this world, hands down, one of the best titles I ever played. Also Flashback :D

And how to forget the Monkey Island Series...

the Mario and Sonic games too... :D

It´s nice to know his influences... tho the "atrticle" is a little too shallow, I´d like him to speak a little more. Either he is an android or they just translated a small part of a longer interview... anyways, japanese geniuses like this one tend to speak very little. I have all miyazaki´s movies "making of" books and his words are very few, they either understand and see so much more than me, or they simply don´t have the skill to communicate with words (hence their brilliant communication through other channles, videogames, movies, etc.)

XD

Monkey Islands and Mario Bros are games that I dig too. A DOS game named Jetpack was a game that got me interested in making games and modifying existing ones.
