Xbox 720 in 2011? Count me in

Has game journalism really gotten to such a low level that we need a counterargument for everything someone on the internet writes? This is ridiculous.

the article that said "count me out" annoyed me as well as lots of other 360 owners.

i think that article was just flame bait for ps3 fanboys in the open zone.

But overall: its your decision you dont have to buy the next xbox if you dont want to

1.3 - @goldenzealot:
I agree. Both articles are just as bad in my opinion. The more people feel attacked by these "news" and give it the attention it doesn't deserve, the bigger the whole thing gets until a new flamewar starts and that is what I don't want to see, because it's stupid. If you don't want to buy something, then just don't, easy as that - but don't come back and attack others because they bought it.
Some people give their best to discuss things on a sophisticated level, but the majority turns gaming into a useless fight without any brains. It's "articles" like these that add fuel to the dieing fire and make fanboys/fangirls something we accept as common.

No mate - a discussion is when someone chooses to discuss an article in the comments section, or on a discussion site.

Your kind of 'rebuttal article' is a prime example of shoddy argumentative net journalism.

..and the only person who need to look anything up is you!
The PS3 has 512meg of ram, thats an absolute fact. As with most shoddy journalists, you simply take a fanboy comment based on how the memory is divided and accessed, and then spread you complete misunderstanding as if it were fact. Its utterly pathetic.

Not that I won't buy into the next xbox - I'm a tech whore and I have everything. In a way its a shame they didn't make the 360 with enough foresight to last a bit longer, but given some of the great game experiences we've had from it, I guess we shouldn't complain.

My only complaint would be if they immediately drop all support for 360. What they did with xnox was an utter disgrace and many people haven't bought into MS because of this awful support.

I would have to say that titntin nailed it on the head above me. This is just another fanboy bashing an article that was perhaps written by another fanboy but in no way was necessary. Comments sections of these types of sites is a perfect place for you to react and to write another silly article about it is just not needed. If you get offended this easily over an internet article about some silly gaming console... Well, I question your judgement at any case in the world of journalism.

1.8 - i'll be getting one the first day it's released
i love having new consoles and technology.

tintin: can i ask why it's such a crime to discontinue support for your old hardware, when the ultimate aim in releasing new stuff is getting the masses to buy this one? i keep seeing this argument where people attack microsoft for dropping support.

i keep saying this

when i buy a new console, i want to know that the platform holder is throwing 100% of their resources behind it! not 70% 80% or 90%. i dont want them still using studios to create games for their older platform when i've just a few hundred quid on their new equipment!

truly, i cant see how poeple think it's great that sony still make games for the ps2, when those studios could be making games for the ps3! and increasing the exclusive content. perhaps if sony stopped supporting the ps2, things like the xmb, voice chat and a unified on-line service mite have arrived a whole lot quicker.

using the argument that dropping support equals a bad company just seems a little dumb, and backward thinking imo.

that it doesn't get to the point where a company comes out with a system every couple years. Give me a monster now and 6-7+ years down the line give me another monster, not a monster.5 or something like that which only was a minor improvement. It just sucks for young gamers the most because they're the one's that rely on their parents to buy them these machines.

In 2011 the Playstation 3 will be selling for $100. In 2011 the Xbox 720 will probably launch at a 500 or more price point.

What would you rather buy then? A PS3 with a HUGE gaming library, or an expensive Xbox 720 with no catalog of software (e.g. like how the PS3 first launched).

Its like the Playstation 2, all over again. When will MS ever learn? I welcome the competition though, its made us have better products!

45% more than multiplatform games... with the exception of CoD4 of course.

and i'm sure that if MS does a heck of a job with the next Xbox and more than anything is reliable and shows amazing games i think a lot of ps3 owners will buy it.

i know i would.. as a gamer is all about games.. not hating the competition.

The whole article is not even worth to talk about.. the author says that the ps3 has 256 ram and that the the next 2gb Ram Xbox will only cost $299.. lol that's just fanboy talk right there

@BulletToothTony - The PS3 does have 256MB RAM - look it up. Just because it has 256MB for graphics does not make it 512MB. I never said the 720 would cost $299 - all I said was that the 360 launched at $299/$399.

Come on, if you are going to write about the PS3, at least know more about it.

http://playstation.about.co...

Taking a look at another site that knows a bit more about journalism, we can see that adding 256 to 256, the PS3 truly has 512...

Again, if you want your articles to sound intelligent, just research the stuff you write about. Then you won't make mistakes like this.

Man PC gaming is far from Dead...yes it's more expensive than consoles, but you get much, much better visuals, you can get 60fps (or more) and 1080P(equivalent) on all(except Crysis) games. Most of those games were bought at a lower price than their console counterparts. I use a XBox 360 contoller for some games, Keyboard and mouse combo for PFS and RTS games and stearing whell for racing games.

We get most of the console games including lots of MS exclusives we can play back catalogs, and most games look better and play better once on PC (Mass Effect, GTAs, GRID, Oblivion, etc...)

Did I mention Mods...

Here's my collection (in part):
Race Driver GRID
Mass Effect
UT3
Crysis
CoD4
Orange Box
BioShock
Gears of War
Oblivion
Halo 2
GTA (3, VC, SA)
The Withcher
S.T.A.L.K.E.R
Civilizations 4
Guitar Hero 3
Sins of a Solar Empire
Full collection of NES, SNES and N64 games using emulators.
and many more...

@BulletToothtony
"he author says that the ps3 has 256 ram and that the the next 2gb Ram Xbox will only cost $299.. lol that's just fanboy talk right there"

Why 8 gigs already cost $250-300. Ummm 2gigs cost how much now? About $50 maybe? ATI' and nvidia's future GPU are trying to have 6 cores in them. I don't know if they can make it affordable meaning not $1000 for a console I say bring it. The last time Consoles gave PC gaming a bloody nose was 2d graphics and effects. I would like to see that again with 3d maybe.

I expect the next HD machines to come with 4-8 gigs standard of ram. I'm serious... Why not? The prices will be even lower in 3 years.

Also people forget the next xbox may actually be backward compatible since MS is cool with IBM. The old xbox was abandon because intel wanted to stick them with the price along with nvidia even though the parts had drop in their production cost. The 3rd parties maybe the ones that support the old xbox more anyway. Want will be interesting is what concept will they use next time. The Wii proved that you can have a core box that is capable yet the HD proved that you have lots of people who want more. What if it's a modular system like a console standard? Good enough to play old xbox games and upgradable in peaces so that you can play the more realistic games? When I say upgradable not like a 3 month refresh more like what we have now a Wii on one end and a HD console on the other.

think it'll come down to hardware, media capability and innovation. shot myself in the foot a little with the purchase of blu-ray as i'm not sure how much it'll feature in future consoles that arn't sony based, but guess ps3 will always do that and buy 2012 be some really cheap blu-ray players on the market anyway.

I'm just saying, I like it when consoles have a long life span to them. I don't have to worry about upgrading anything to play the latest games, like the PC, where you have to basically upgrade something every two years, have it be memory, a processor or something else. If M$ were to do this then it would also make Sony and Nintendo upgrade their consoles sooner then anticipated also. I don't like that......

What is funny is it's the fans that are making this all ok. We want movie games we want cine what ever 2.0. To do this they will have to be the first out once again. Had the PS3 came out a year later it may have had a 8800 in it but who knows? The race for graphics superiority is whats driving this not MS they just joined the game. The real problem is figuring out how to please the new tech hungry and the normal gamers also.

I'm not crazy about MS either no one in their right mind is. Yet the only thing they have done wrong this gen is make a system that is not designed for ware and tear. The IEEE website states why this has happened and it all makes sense. But I will be on the wait and see side rather than just forget it. I don't have to like the company to play it's system. Good tech is good tech for the right amount money.

Another thing is people want a standard and with out it you will continue here people say crazy stuff like the cell will make up for the lack of ram or it's just not being tapped. Standards are based on known facts and what tech can or can't do at certain points. It's like when AMD had the memory controller on the athlons it was better now with out even the same thing the core duo is crushing AMD. One thing does not solve all in computers and certain things can not be replaced unless true break throughs are made. Developer want a standard also. They want to make an object once or make an Ai once and then just build on them. Learning the whole thing over and over and over is cause lots of talent to leave the industry.

As for the late adopter argument. There's no reason to believe a late adopter this gen will be an early adopter next-gen, so you'll still have plenty of time and plenty of games before you move on.

Well they have to make it quiet. And fully backwardscompatible ofcourse.

Heck if it where just quiet and cut the load times in half I'd buy it. :P
But I wonder what media they will use. Some will say blueray ofcourse. But I wonder if it is fast enough. But I guess you could do like the Halo game on PC. You had an option to install to harddrive while you where playing. Don't know why ps3 games doesn't use that. Maybe the developers are just lazy.

After the release of the next-box. Sorry, but after 5 of these pile of crap 360's, I have learned my lesson. MS has some great games and no matter what happens, I am going to have a 360 to play but that doesn't mean I am going to be stupid enough to fall for them again. At least not right away! lol

9 - What I've said before...
Think about it, it isn't like last generation when games were coming out left, right, and centre. It isn't about Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo it's about the whole generation moving a lot slower. In two years time I know for sure I won't be getting any next generation console. I'll only think about it around the 7 - 10 year mark and that's about it.

Last generation people were begging for a new console and since you can do so much with these consoles, why get another in two years. I honestly think the Nintendo Wii will age the fastest just based on the software (games). The more you can do with the console besides gaming, will make a lot of buyers wait a lot longer. Last generation there were no movie rentals, online stores, online 3D communities, HD (High Definition) downloads...etc. With that alone will last me, let alone the games themselves.

The next consoles would have to really impress me besides graphics otherwise it makes no point upgrading, if my current console can do the same. This is what will hold people back what can it do that my last console won't offer?

The best analogy I can come up with is buying a console is like buying a house. Once you make the investment it will be hard for you to convince me to move out within 5 years if everything I need is in this location.

I'd like to see how the 360 will last till 2011 considering how it comes last in sales week after week after week after week. And the gap in which it gets beat will only be more, and more, and more. Bad business is what i believe its called. And if MS are trying to stretch the 360's life to 2011, that is nothing short of moronic.

10.1 - ok
sony having dominated with wii like sales figures for a decade, can now rarely scrape 200k a month more than the new kid on the block WORLDIDE! and i'm being generous with the 200K

bad business you believe it's called?? what making money on the hardware, a killing on xbox-live, and having the highest attach rate equating to more and more software royalties is bad businiess??? interesting.

when sony are reported to be losing $200 on each console, dont charge for on-line, and dont have the attach rate meaning lower royalties. sony are using the profitable ps2 to help bolster the sluggish ps3 me thinks.

sony will come second after nintendo this gen guaranteed, but at the expense at losing a massive chunk of what was once their exclusive market. next gen, the one after and the one after that will see things tighten up between the three platform holders...i would'nt put my money on sony bouncing to victory next gen if i was a gambler. if the ps3 had been another ps2 and sewn up the market already, then i wouldn't say it. but seeing as it's nowhere near what the ps2 was well...and please dont link some stupid vgchartz rubbish saying that it's on track with the ps2. when it's clear to even blind people that it's not. and the 9k a week average in japan is a testement to how far sony have fallen. especially when nintendo are averaging around 45/50K a week.

it's gonna be a few years before microsoft recoup all their investment in the xbox brand. but i think they will do it, turn from red to black in that part of their business, and may even challenge for the top spot in a generation or two. only time will tel.

but, whatever happens....it's great to be a gamer with these companys fighting for our money.

Actually I totally would bet on Sony next gen. If MS releases a 720 in 2011 I guarantee you that people are gonna wait and see on the hardware side to make sure they aren't stiffed. Probably wait till Sony releases their hardware to make a comparison before buying. Wii? By 2012-13 the Wii is going to be so outdated that the public impression of Wii2, will be negative not positive. When the Wii2 comes out, consumers will be thinking, "meh gonna be the same underpowered hardware with the loads of crapware games like Wii 1." and that's assuming Nintendo doesn't come up with a newer more innovative controlling mechanism. If they come out with the same mote... both the 720 and PS4 will crush Nintendo with the same implementations.

@thewhoopimen the only way next gen crushes nintendo is going to be by price and power ratios... with that price being around 250-$300 tops unless nintendo goes all high tech like their older systems. If you remember the N64, GC, and even the SNES where pretty high tech for their time.

"By 2012-13 the Wii is going to be so outdated that the public impression of Wii2, will be negative not positive." the public clearly does not care about what you and me care about. They all have DS and standard dvd players and only 12% last time I check had HDtvs. The design of the Wii is timeless that's the problem. Most tech people do not see this. I mean look at a frank loyd wright building and tell me that was built in 1920s? The only thing the public truly cares about is safety and money. The tech public will care about whats new on computers and the kids will be left with consoles. Believe me if the price would have been right then nintendo would have 4 cores and a HD GPU also. They made the right move and that's always been a standard for console the bulk of your sales are only at certain price levels. tech does not always keep people from making good games the PS2 is a prime example.

I also want to point out only tech that lowers prices is a tech that can crush any thing. Very few pay for performance specs if the price is not right. You will see companies still using pentium 4s LOL when they know they need to upgrade. CD and DVDs where wanted because the price did not exceed a certain level and it was a level of quality they wanted.

Hey I'm all for some crushing because I benefit yet I hope MS and SONY have a better plan this time around because if they are all on the same level and around a certain price range then nintendo will win again due to them jump starting their own market with their own games rather than tech.

I missed the boat on lower prices crushing all tech... and I agree with you 100% on that note. But my bet is that by 2011, 80% of people are going to have an HDTV. Maybe not now in 2008 but 3-4 years it's going be a different story. If the price points are going to be tighter in 2011, I think people will actually take the time to look at quality. As you've seen in recent N4g postings, both Sony and Microsoft have Wii-mote implementations ready.

Your points of timelessness make me believe that Nintendo is going the way of Tiger. Meaning future owners of game consoles will have Nintendos for young kids and Sony/Microsoft consoles for teens to adults. Frankly, as much as there is a consistent market in the youth crowd, its just like every toy out there. A toy.

uninformed people and/or simple minded fan boys are the ones that will wait in line to buy a console on day one. you have to be a tool to make the same, over $300 mistake. they will fool you twice so shame on you! just think of the computer some people could have gotten if they didnt have to buy 4 360's =/ i have nothing against the games on the 360 (well i dont like halo) but the whole hardware debacle this gen should detour any normally thinking person from getting the nextbox immediately upon release. not to mention it will be new hardware just like the ps3 was so its going to take at least a year to program CORRECTLY for. and the install base of the ps3 will be so high developers will shun the next box off the bat like they did with the ps3 because of the year head start install base the 360 had. i realize i will get a ton of disagrees because ive noticed mainly xbox fans posting in here so far, but seriously people, think logically.. dont be a pathetic tool. you work hard for your money, well you should at least, dont just throw it away.

Absolute bollocks. The faulty hardware with ps2/ps1 was no where near on the scale of the 360's RROD. There was a problem with the disc trays with the ps2's at the start of its life. That was fixed, and ps2's are fine. I don't even know what the problem with ps1 was. If there were a problem, again like the ps2, it was probably mandatory hardware faults at launch like most products get. But they were fixed within like a year. Nothing like RROD. You had 5 ps2's? lol, i'd be surprised if you had 1

No kidding. Why are all the Sony fans getting high and mighty about failure rates of the launch X360? The PS2s bricked like nobody's business and Sony didn't fix them at their expense like Microsoft does with the Xbox 360. Maybe it's a sophomore slump to have the second console have technical issues. who knows. The original X-box didn't have noticable technical issues so who says the xbox 720 will.

Actually the ps2's problems were never fixed and it was absolutely as big as RROD. Most ps2's lasted about a year with the dreaded disc error. But when the ps2 was around, their were no N4G sites where people can easily spread the word around.
